A two-alarm alarm fire this afternoon severely damaged a three-story apartment building on Eutaw Street in East Boston, displacing 13 people.
A firefighter was taken to the hospital for heat exhaustion, but was expected to recover. No other injuries were reported in the fire, which was reported at about 2:42 p.m., said Steve MacDonald, a spokesman for the Boston Fire Department.
MacDonald said damage was estimated at $200,000.
Ford Stokes, 54, who lives across the street, said, "I saw something coming out of the window. I thought it was a fog. I saw a ton of people running out and I thought, 'Oh, my God, that's smoke.'"
He lauded the firefighters' work, saying, "It makes you feel good. This is one of the best fire departments in the country. Not just Massachusetts, the country."
