A Brookline apartment building was severely damaged by a fire early this morning that was caused by Boston College students who were having a barbecue last night, said Brookline Deputy Fire Chief Steve Sweeney.

Firefighters responded to a report of heavy smoke coming from the roof of the building on Strathmore Road at 4:24 a.m.

None of the 12 people who live in the four units of the building were hurt, but two firefighters were taken to Brigham and Womens Hospital, one suffering chest pains and the other an injured shoulder.

The damage caused to the building and personal property was estimated at $415,000, Sweeney said.
