A 68-year-old disabled man was arraigned this morning on charges he murdered a woman who lived down the hall in a public housing development in Jamaica Plain.

Charles Cherry was held without bail and charged with using a hunting rifle to kill his neighbor, Elvia McField, 56, late Friday night.

Prosecutors said the dispute was over money that McField allegedly owed Cherry, who hobbled into a glass holding area in court wearing a hospital gown that exposed his chest. He appeared to be confused as he stared at the judge with bulging, unblinking eyes.

Prosecutors said there was a trail of blood leading from Cherry’s apartment to where they found McField in the hallway. They added that a video shows McField stumbling out of Cherry’s apartment seconds after the alleged shooting.

Judge Edward Redd scheduled a probable cause hearing for Oct. 30.
