John and Elizabeth Edwards have backed out of a speech they had been scheduled to give at Salem State College on Sept. 23.

Schools officials had been optimistic that the couple would still speak despite the acknowledgment last month by the former senator and Democratic presidential candidate that he had an extramarital affair with a campaign aide. However, the school was notified this past weekend by the couple's agent that they would not be coming to Salem State.

"They have chosen to cancel their appearance," said Karen Cady, a spokesperson for Salem State. "We are actively pursuing an alternate for the same date or some time later this fall."

The school was notified by The Harry Walker Agency, Inc., which bills itself as the world's leading booking agent for exclusive speakers.

The event at Salem State had been dubbed a "conversation with John and Elizabeth Edwards."
