A stately Winchester home was damaged this morning in a two-alarm blaze, but no serious injuries were reported.
Firefighters were called to the scene at 10:20 after an explosion and fire in the attic. Contractors were installing an air conditioning system when a workman's blowtorch malfunctioned, causing the fire, Fire Chief John Nash said.
The third floor of the home was extensively damaged and the roof partially collapsed, said Nash.
Firefighters from seven neighboring communities assisted in battling the blaze.
The owners of the home on Central Green were able to leave safely, said Nash. One of the workmen was slightly burned. Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion, but were in good condition.
"It was a terrible scene," said neighbor Mary Barger, who lives across the street.
