Firefighters responding to reports of a strong, strange odor on Tudor Street in South Boston found a 5-year-old girl naked and covered in feces, in a home that was filled with rats, spiderwebs, trash and cigarettes – conditions so deplorable the home was condemned, officials said.
“Firefighters found complete squalor inside,” said Steve MacDonald, a Boston Fire Department spokesman.
The girl and three adults – a 78-year-old woman, a 41-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man – were brought to Boston hospitals for treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning .
Fire officials determined an NStar wire was burning underground, and that smoke followed the conduits to several homes. The three adults and child complained of dizziness and lightheadedness, officials said.
But just as troubling was the condition of the home, which had a rancid stench that could be smelled from across the street, police said.
The girl was released from the hospital and was taken into the custody of the Department of Children and Families, said Alison Goodwin, an agency spokeswoman.
