Top elected officials gathered today in Boston's Dorchester section to celebrate the completion of the $30 million project that has upgraded the Fields Corner station on the MBTA's Red Line.
Governor Deval Patrick said in a statement that the project was "a great achievement" and sprucing it up had been a key priority for the state and community.
"In hard economic times with gas nearly $4 a gallon, this station serves as yet another motivating factor for peole to utilize public transportation," said Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
The station is now fully accessible to the disabled and has a brand-new busway and lobby, complete with new elevators and an escalator, officials said. Communications and security systems have been updated. Other renovations include new platforms, lighting, landscaping, and signage.
The station is one of four in Dorchester identified for a complete reconstruction. The Legislature in 1999 appropriated $67 million for the Dorchester Red Line Rehabilitation Project.
