Police officers found themselves in the right spot at the right time Monday night when they arrested a man suspected of fleeing police who were investigating a nearby slaying in Roxbury.

Elbert Newsom, 19, of Dorchester, was charged with possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police said he fit the description of a man who fled officers investigating the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old at about 9:13 p.m. Monday on Parker Street, but they are still investigating.

In the shooting, the teenager was hit multiple times. He was rushed to Boston Medical Center and was later pronounced dead. Police have not released his name.

After the shooting, officers in the area of Academy Road and Dimock Street were told that a suspect was heading their way, after he fled in a motor vehicle, and then on foot.

Officers set up a perimeter in the rear of 40 Dimock St. Soon after, they observed a man matching the description of the suspect exit from a vacant lot. He was jogging, sweating, and gasping for air, police said.

Officers stopped the man and conducted a search. They allegedly found a bag of marijuana on him. He was later identified as Newsom and was arrested for drug possession. Police said they also developed information that led to a separate charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the police homicide unit at 617-343-4470.

Newsom was arraigned in Roxbury District Court today. He pleaded not guilty, and was ordered held on $38,000 cash bail. The case was continued to Oct. 14, said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the Suffolk district attorney’s office.
