The presses of the Boston Herald were vandalized last night when someone cut 15 conveyor belts and tampered with six sorting machines, according to a report filed with Boston police.
The newspaper notified police at 12:19 a.m. The vandalism likely occurred sometime between 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., when the damage was discovered by an employee.
A spokeswoman for the newspaper did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment. Police did not report making any arrests.
The Herald announced in June plans to close its sole printing plant in Boston this fall and have the paper printed by two outside firms, Dow Jones & Co. and Boston Offset. The move will eliminate the jobs of 130 to 160 workers.
