Town mourns for grad killed in Boston crash

The Milton High School community is mourning the loss of a graduate who died Sunday from injuries he suffered in a car accident in Dorchester Friday night.
Matthew McFarland, an 18-year-old who graduated in June and was two weeks into the semester at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, died at Boston Medical Center.
He was with three friends Friday night when the green Toyota Solara they were riding in crashed into a utility pole on Adams Street at 10:37 p.m., according to Boston police.
Police spokesman David Estrada said the car was found lying on its passenger side on the sidewalk.
One of the passengers told police that they were on Adams Street heading toward Gallivan Boulevard when the driver lost control of the car and it smashed into the pole. The four occupants were brought to Boston Medical Center. The other three passengers were not identified. Police did not consider their injuries critical.
No charges have been filed in the accident.
Deborah McFarland, Matthew’s mother, said today that she has seen an outpouring of support from her son’s friends, and from their parents. Some of the parents have spoken with her about the fear of seeing their teenaged children heading out in cars.
“My biggest fear was something like this would happen, but you never think it will be your child,” she said.
She said she has spoken with the driver of the car, another Milton High School graduate, and he expressed remorse.
“You could see the pain and anguish in his face. This is something he will have to livee with,” McFarland said. “But this was truly an accident. My heart also goes out to the mother of this boy and his family.”
