Yawkey Foundation to give $15 million to Catholic schools
By Globe Staff
The Yawkey Foundation will give $15 million to Pope John Paul II Catholic Academy and the St. Peter's Teen Center, a big boost for Catholic schools in Boston, officials at the archdiocese said today.
The award will be used to support the construction and renovation of the five school buildings comprising the academy in Dorchester and Mattapan, and the renovation of the teen center in Dorchester, the archdiocese said in a statement.
The academy replaces seven independent parish schools. The center serves youths ages 13 to 19 in the Bowdoin/Geneva neighborhood of Dorchester.
The Yawkey Foundation has awarded nearly $200 million since 2002 to a broad range of organizations. The foundation's mission is to continue the legacy of long-time Red Sox owners Tom and Jean Yawkey by making grants that help the quality of life of youth, families, and the underserved.
