An off-duty Boston firefighter was one of two men killed in a crash early this morning when their car swerved off Route 28 in Quincy and rolled into a tree, police said.

Firefighter Paul Loring, 26, of Hyde Park, was killed in the crash, according to the Boston Fire Department, which today notified its members of the loss of one of their own over the department radio. The other man was identified this afternoon as Patrick J. Forde Jr., 25, of Canton, a Hyde Park native and long-time friend.

Loring had joined the department in August 2006 and was most recently assigned to Tower Ladder 17 in downtown Boston, the department said today. He was engaged to be married and was shopping for a house, according to Commissioner Roderick Fraser, who spoke today with his parents.

"He was looking to kind of move ahead in his life," Fraser said. "It's very, very tragic. His parents, as you can imagine, are just destroyed over this."

Loring was an Iraqi War veteran, according to a spokesman for the Massachusetts Army National Guard. He enlisted in 1999 and was honorably discharged in 2005. He served in Iraq with the 1058 Transportation Company, which is based in Hingham, from February 2003 to June 2004, said Army Major John McKenna.

“He was honorably discharged,’’ said McKenna.

A short distance away from the Loring family home on Turtle Pond Parkway, relatives and friends of Forde were gathering at his family’s home on Chittick Road, where Forde grew up along with two older brothers.

One of those brothers, Brian Forde, said today that his brother was a graduate of Boston Latin High School and Salem State College and had recently been promoted to a manger’s job at the Walpole branch office of TD Banknorth.

Brian Forde said his brother had recently purchased a house in Canton with his long-time girlfriend. The couple was planning a 2009 wedding, he said. “They just made an absolutely best couple,’’ Brian Forde said.

The two men were returning from last night’s New England Patriots game in Foxboro, said MacDonald. Brian Forde said the family does not know where the men went following the game and does not yet know where they were heading to at the time of the crash.

Loring and Forde were both wearing their seatbelts when their sedan crashed at 2:40 a.m., according to a State Police press release. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, Loring had a valid license with just one infraction on his record, a 2004 citation for not wearing a seatbelt.

Loring was driving north on Route 28 when the 2005 Lincoln LS went off the roadway to the left and rolled into a tree, police said. It was not immediately clear what caused Loring to lose control of the vehicle. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a Milton Fire Department report, the car was split in two by the force of the impact.

The crash remains under investigation by State Police detectives, the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the Crime Scene Services Section. The Milton police and fire departments, Mass Highway, and the medical examiner’s office assisted troopers at the scene.

The crashed closed Route 28 in both directions between Interstate 93 and Chickatawbut Road.
