Man, 25, killed in Jamaica Plain shooting
By Matt Collette, Globe Correspondent
A 25-year-old man was killed in a shooting this afternoon in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, Boston Police said.
The shooting on Rossmore Road was reported at about 2:55 p.m. The victim, who was shot in the chest, was taken to Boston Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, said Officer James Kenneally, a police spokesman.
The victim's name was not released, pending notification of his relatives and an autopsy.
Rossmore Road near the intersection with Forest Hills Street was closed off as police investigated.
Luis Gonzalez, 47, who lives on Forest Hills Street, said, “I just heard three shots: Pow. Pow. Pow.”
“It was definitely not firecrackers," he said. "I swear it sounded so loud that I thought it was next door.”
“This is a nice area. I just got here over the summer. I mean it's Jamaica Plain, but things happen," he said.
It was the 49th homicide this year in Boston. Last year at this time, there were 59.

Wow. *t's sad to hear about this poor man suddenly losing his life. God bless his family! My husband and I lived on Atherton Street the first year of our marriage. Now that we have a young child, we were hoping to live in a cohousing commuity in JP (around Green Street) because we thought it was a safer neighborhood than Dorchester or Roxbury. Now we don't know.
I feel the police department is not doing enough or trying hard to stop the crime in Boston ! it will get worse if they don't to put cameras all over Boston
Mayor Menino and governor Deval need to make changes as soon as possible.
I live in the Roxbury, Jamica Plain Border. I was also skeptical about living in this area. However it is still a great neighborhood. I believe that these are isolated incidents. They should not impede your normal activities just rather make one vigilant of their environment. Jamaica Plain is a great place to raise a family with all the parks, schools and close proximity to the trains and expressways. I do feel horrible about the incident that occurred this evening and more disgusted that it happened in broad day light. I have a friend that lives on Atherton which too is the Roxbury border of Jamaica Plain and its a great spot to be. I hope this incidents does not discourage you from leaving the neighborhood. There has been a lot of crime that has sparked up in the neighborhood ever since the young man got shot and killed inside the basketball court earlier this year. I wish that more funding was available for community out reach programs and crime prevention as well as support for our teens in our community that are truly suffering. I will soon graduate college with a major in criminal justice and a minor in sociology....maybe i can try to make a change to support the great city of Boston. Take Care until next time.
When are the selfish thugs who take these actions realize that they are hurting and destroying people's lives that they don't even know. Whatever this young man did, or did not do to deserve this, his family and friends will continue to feel the pain and loss from his untimely and violent death. And a whole community will feel unsafe long after the story fades away.
The police and the court system need to do thre job better and start getting these killers off the street. The court system gets these individuals from arrest gives them fines and puts them right back out on the street .One big visious cycle
I feel that everyone is blaming the deaths of other people on the death of Luis Troncoso.I feel that it isn't right for people to say that what happened on the day he died April 20th is whats making other death happen.I also think the police does hav fault because if they were really tring i don't think there would be so many deaths....I'm gone for today see u all tomarrow..
Gary, you'll be missed and remembered by all whom you have touched during your life. A few of the fellas and I got together Saturday night and reminisced about all the good times we used to have. Apparently, working two jobs and trying to make life better wasn't good enough - you're in a better place now so Rest In Peace Bro!
My heart goes out to the victim's family.
I learned of this incident while I was in the neighborhood to look at an apartment. Now, I'm pretty freaked out, and don't know if it would be wise to move there. I am also terribly sorry for his family and what they must be going through.
I live in Jamaica Plain and it is a great neighborhood. Last thing we need tho is cameras everywhere. More cameras does not equal more safety. It just means a lack of privacy. If there are cameras everywhere, the people who are not committing crimes lose a sense of privacy while the people who are committing crimes just go out and buy ski masks.
RiP to another fallen friend we will forever miss you Gary.. no more seein yo in the corner of Pimentel with your white shades on whether it was rain or shine.. :'(
