Nader left his fourth stop in Central Square, Cambridge today and headed for his fifth, Tufts University in Medford.

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader, who is making a marathon tour today of Massachusetts, says that Democrat Barack Obama will beat Republican John McCain.

"Obama is going to win, but we can start building a third party now," Nader told a crowd composed mostly of young people at an event this morning outside the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston.

The 74-year-old Nader planned to make appearances in 21 cities and towns across Massachusetts, ending with an event just before midnight in Sheffield. Along the way, he planned to set a Guinness record for most campaign speeches in a single day.

Nader's campaign has said he could be "the deciding factor" in key swing states, including Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado. Many Democrats still blame Nader for draining votes away from Al Gore in the 2000 presidential race.

  1. Today’s event should have been front page news.
“Many Democrats still blame Nader for draining votes away from Al Gore in the 2000 presidential race.” These people have no idea what they are talking about.

  1. We live in a two-party dictatorship, what we need is approval voting (approvalvoting.org) like we already have for local elections. That way we can take "vote splitting" off the table and people can vote for whomever they want without having to worry about throwing away their vote.

  1. See you later Nader. You may have done something useful for society long ago. Now you are just an attention-seeking old men.

  1. Nader's energy and commitment at 74 would shame any 24 year old.

  1. To avoid draining votes, it is very important for more democracy to institute instant rerun votes so that if a voter's first vote does not produce a winning candidate, he or she can have a second vote.

  1. Nader...the best man....never the groomed.

  1. At this point, pure ego. Nader's legacy is tainted: once a great man.

  1. Gore lost the 2000 race because he didn't give Nader's voters sufficient reason to vote for Gore. If Gore stood for something in the same way Nader did, he would have won. This time I'm undecided between Nader and McKinney. Obama supports the bankers and war.

  1. Ralph, thanks for 8 years of Bush... Well Done!

  1. So Nader speeds across Massachusetts, trying to set a new world's record. All I have to say is: Unsafe at any speed.

  1. It would be incredible if history repeats itself and Nader tips the scales in favor of McCain!

  1. It never ceases to amaze me at this day and age that people still believe in a broken two party system.

Nader says people have the power to change this, but I'm afraid they're too cowardly to take that leap of faith. And our two party system loves it. It keeps them going.

Better to vote for what you believe and lose than to vote for what you don't want and win.

  1. In 2000 Ralph Nader told us all that there was no difference between George Bush and Al Gore. Really? If Al Gore had been elected, would we have gone to war? Would our environment be in such a dire predicament? Would the economy have tanked so badly? Would abortion rights be in danger? Would the Supreme Court have turned back the clock in areas such as individual freedoms? Would there have been such massive government spying and invasion of privacy? Sorry, Ralph. I'm all for a third party -- but not at the expense of so many important issue.

  1. no sane voter would waste a vote on Nader...he is a cranky old egoist...!

  1. When Barack builds his team in preparation for January, he should consider including Ralph Nader on his team. The man is a storehouse of knowledge. It may not happen, and Nader may not want the job, but Obama should at least have his phone number handy.

I had voted for Nader a couple of times before. I might do it again this year, but simply out of protest of the two-party system. Anyway, Obama is a shoo-in for Massachusetts. I understand that Nader is very active today, but I don't think all that energy is going to stay with him that much longer. Also, when hearing Nader speak, he tends to throws terms around like "crooks", "swindlers", and "thieves", especially when he talks about Wall Street. A lot of people can understand why he would talk that way about some CEOs and others, but when speaking from the presidential podium, it wouldn't sound very constructive, especially when you're trying to enact sweeping changes, bring back regulation, and promote more consumer-friendly legislation. You wouldn't want all that blowback from people on whom you're pasting those negative labels.

That's why I really say Obama should be out front (the speaker), but with Nader within earshot (the adviser).

  1. For those who say that Nader's record is "tainted" somehow, why don't you compare his record with that of whatever candidate it is you're voting for.

He has been consistently right, against all odds, on a host of issues, from arguing against the invasion of Iraq, to the recent Jeep plant closures in OH, to deregulation bankrupting our economy, and said from day one that this bailout was bad for Americans.

He is America's #1 citizen, and I am proud to say he has my vote.

  1. Way to go.... Nader.... Were voting for you...

  1. Watch the movie "An Unreasonable Man." Ralph Nader has been working hard for justice for 40 some years. Please don't fool yourself and say that he has such a big ego he's trying to ruin the election for Obama. Every time you vote for the lesser of two evils, both get worse! Vote Nader!

Posted by Trif October 26, 08 12:30 AM
  1. I'm a Democrat, but I would never say Nader is "all ego" or that he stole the election from the Dems in 2000. The reality is that Gore did win the popular vote and quite possibly won FL. The Supreme Court made a call and Gore was too spineless to challenge it.

Nader is bringing a lot of important issues to the table, and we are better off having him.

Posted by MattMedia October 26, 08 12:35 AM
  1. Nader has only slightly more respect for the truth than McCain.... Remember "The Supreme Court Is a phony issue" and "There is no difference between Al Gore and George W. Bush" ? Please. When Nader sold that crap to college kids, he lost my respect...pushing pure cynicism on kids. The disingenuous campaigns that Nader runs are now his legacy. As an elder statesman Nader could credibly begin a true movement for verified voting, instant run-off balloting, proportional representation, and a number of reforms of the current system that could open things beyond 2 parties. As an elder statesman he could do it, but as a candidate, Nader is a joke. Until the system changes, Nader only fragments the center-left coalition--which we can ill-afford now.

  1. Hopefully he steals votes from Barack "I can buy the White House via massive, undocumented donations and the excitement of people who don't know any better" Obama.

  1. Anybody Taking punches at Nader about an ego trip or an attention seeker should take a hard look at their own ill informed ass and ask themselves what have I done for my fellow human beings recently and go do something. Ralph Nader has more integrity and moral fortitude in his big toe than any of these losers including myself will ever muster. Ralph Nader has been battling the powers that be making America and the World a safer and better place for everyone for 5 decades and many of these misinformed idiots are probably alive and hence able to spew their nonsense because of Ralph.

  1. Gore lost the election because he was guarding the door while clinton and monica were doing there thing. He was to much of a coward to say anything. To him the party is more important then America.

  1. Nader is a real human being. All of the proles here who say they are going to vote two party and have nasty one-liners to throw at Ralph are simply going to be choosing a new Corporate Sales Rep in November. Stupid and unnecessary! 75-80% of us live in moderate to very safe states. Anyone living in a safe state who votes two party is revealing an ignorance of how our electoral system actually works and what the numbers actually were in Florida in 2000 that is monumental. If Nader was a "spoiler" over 537 votes, then Al Gore and his Dems are certainly "racists" for refusing to fight for 57,000 black voters illegally disenfranchised by Bush, right? While 7,000,000 idiot Dems voted for Bush, only 700,000 of them had enough spine

to vote for Nader. Which voter block mattered more to Gore's campaign? There were six other third party candidates on that ballot. Using your very tired seven year old corporate propaganda, they ALL "spoiled". Why did you morons and your corporate media and your corporate party only go after Ralph? To blame a truly tireless warrior for social justice and democracy for your party's incompetence and cowardice is the height of stupidity and ignorance. I suppose you would have written the song "John Henry" about the steam drill instead of the man who fought it. Spineless un-American cowards, every single one of you. You should all be ashamed and since I'm pretty sure that you lack the intelligence or awareness necessary to be ashamed, I'll vote for and support Ralph in your place and I'll be ashamed of you instead. ;-)

  1. To post #17, yes to everything. Gore would have done everything destructive and harmful to people that Bush did, just as Clinton did at Gore's urging for 8 years prior, murdering half a million Iraqi children through "economic sanctions" (blockading food and medicine children desperately needed), creating millions of refugees in the Balkans, bombing the Chinese embassy there to provoke WW3, blanket-spraying toxic herbicide on Colombian farmworkers, ending "welfare as we know it" meaning kicking the poorest women and children in our country out into the street and saying "get a job or a husband", which of course really means get a pimp, and the list goes on.

  1. Ralph you're being an ego maniac. It's time to let this idiotic run go and urge your supporters to vote for Obama. Just because you were able to get naive college students to pay a $50 ticket to listen to your unfounded "have your cake and eat it too" remarks doesn't mean the Bay State in any way welcomes you back. You're an intelligent person and if you truly believed that the government ought to change in the way you outline, then you should play by its rules, get in there and see what you can do. That is precisely what Obama has done. Once he is in the White House he will have to answer to nobody. He is his own man who believes in what he stands for. The same cannot be said of you.
