It's a little weird that folks think that rich folks having poor relatives is unusual or somehow wrong. It's very common for many reasons. How are poor people supported by the government any different than farmers being supported by the government, major banks being supported by the government, or companies like Halliburton being supported by the government? It's not clear whether Obama's extended family members would want a handout or assistance from him. We would have to know a lot more about the situation to make a final judgement. This is the most beautiful campaign story I have heard and is all the more poignant because it is not told for political gain. A decent woman that is not seeking fame from her nephew's success. A loving nephew that is not seeking political gain from his respected aunt. .

This story is a sad commentary on the state of journalism today. Obama's aunt lives in a Boston housing project. Who the "F" cares. Whether she is somehow related to Obama or not means absolutely nothing. She sounds like a fine person. Leave her alone. Reporters from time immemorial have bean taught by mindless professors and others to "find a local angle to a national story," even if it means absolutely nothing one way or the other. I know this because I was a reporter for many years, and this is what I was taught. Shame on all of us.

My mother in law is in what is considered public housing. It is elderly public housing. Alot of elderly people live in public housing. It is usually close to stores and have activities for them. They aren't in need of nursing homes, but want to live in apartment like settings.
My MIL doesn't want her family supporting her.

For months now I have been reading the political comments posted by readers online and I have noticed that the extreme conservative Republicans are especially hateful, and most of them fill their comments with Rush Limbaugh sound bites. Rush Limbaugh has had way too much "freedom of speech" during these last 8 years, encouraged and allowed to do so by the Republican administration. Limbaugh has poisoned a large bloc of Republican citizens, keeping them trapped in an attitude 25 years out of date. He stokes their fears and amplifies their worst characteristics, driving them to see an enemy in everything out of the conservative box. This prevents these people from accepting the changes and advances of 21st century America, isolating them and making it harder and harder for them to live productive and happy lives. It is my hope that the Obama administration will rein in the poison conservative talk show faction, and the people who follow it and live by it can be healed of their unwarranted hate and bigotry.

These comments are pretty disturbing. I have worked on two Republican senatorial campaigns and one Republican gubernatorial campaign. I also spent time supporting McCain's previous presidential bid. I spent enough time to read Obama's books, and research both Biden and Palin. I like to think that I look at things in an objective manner. When I read this article I felt NONE of the emotion that the other "conservatives" have expressed here. I was shocked when I read them. First, Obama is one of the least well-off Senators in the country (Biden is the LEAST well-off). His wealth is recent, and he only paid off his debts/student loans in the last 5-10 years. Second, we are making wild assumptions that contradict what we know from this article. Obama barely knew his father, as he left to go back to Africa when he was a young child. My guess would be that his father's sister would be an even more distant figure in his life than his absent father. Nevertheless, this is a woman who is clearly proud of her nephew. It doesn't sound like a situation where she is indignant of his success and unwillingness to give her a handout. Perhaps she believes that his wealth would be better spent on providing for his two children's future? Why isn't that considered a possibility? That seems like something us conservatives would understand. Frankly, the behavior of people I have always felt ideologically close to has disgusted me in this campaign. I never thought that I would be embarrassed when I looked at my resume and saw [top 15 college name] Republican Club listed. Why the need to publish this lady's address? I've always regarded the Boston Globe as one of the World's finest newspapers when tackling the serious issues, but this was surely not necessary? When we were last in the USA in September we had long discussions with fellow guests in our Motel about how there were two excellent candidates for the Presidency, but it seemed with very few exceptions, most agreed there was only one good candidate for the Vice-Presidency, and being only a heartbeat away from being President, means that the this choice has to taken with extreme care. I feel, as did most of my American friends and colleagues that it was in making this choice that McCain made a huge strategic blunder.

As someone who lives on SS Diability and my private Long Term Disablity policy and has a mother with over a million in her portfolio, I would never consider taking money from my mother. She is 86, and while in still fairly good health, I feel that nest egg is hers. My parents paid for the majority of my college and I felt that was all that was to be expected. I earned my own way after college, supporting myself and my son, and when problems caused by Post Polio Syndrome got to the point that I had to go on disability I did so. (So I guess that puts me on the public dole.)

Yes my mom lives in a 5400 sq. ft. house, I live in a modest 1929 1400 sq. ft. house. Do I expect my mom to pay my way ... no!!!! Both of my parents (dad died 8 yrs ago) offered me money at different times, especially when I bought my house. I turned them down. Now that didn't stop my Republican sister (who also worked and has a husband who could work) from hitting up my mother for at least 3 "loans", and both of my Republican Nieces have also hit up my Mom for money ... Mom even asked me a couple years ago when she was going though her files "why don't I have any loans to you?" Maybe one day I will lose my pride and will have to go hat in hand to my mom, but as long as I make it on my income don't hold your breath.

I would probably go into Section 8 (low income, reduced rent) housing before I considered tapping my mothers nest egg.

I lost the figure on how many Social Security benifiaries live in "rent controlled" public housing but if I remember right it was close to 40%, not including those that are on SS Disablity or Supplemental SS Disablity, since SSSDI only pays out around $600 a month I would guess the figure for those is closer to 80%. I do know several that have to live with relatives and hate it ... not because they hate their relatives but because they can't be independent.

Most of the comments here focus on whether Obama's aunt should (or shouldn't) live in public housing. Only a few make the key point, which is that an illegal immigrant is able to draw on taxpayer resources. Most press coverage (incorrectly) asserts that taxpayer resources are off limits to illegal immigrants. The case of Obama's aunt is just the latest example of how this is not the case. It is also just one example of how illegal immigrants cost more than they contribute. The real story would be if Obama had been able to finagle his aunt's status to legal. Am I missing something? Mr. Obama's aunt is residing in the USA illegally. If I am correct, Section 8 (or any housing assistance) is only available to USA citizens. This is the best the muckrakers on the right could come up with? The depths to which the Republican machinery will sink to sway voters is deplorable to the point of being sickening. What does a poor old woman who risked everything she had to come to America and try to make a better life for herself, who scrounged up all she could to support her nephew, a nephew whom she has every reason to be proud of... what does any of this have to do with Obama being elected president? I not that wealthy, but I can tell you that I would not allow an aunt I love to live in public housing, especially If I were planning on running for president or governor. I am amazed at how News Media was unfair in it's coverage when it comes to this year's elections. Barak Obama has time and again come out with splendid surprises that voters would have never found at and still has lots of unknowns in his bag. News Media like CNN have made a big splash about Sarah Palin's spend on dresses, but it did not make the same noise about Barak Obama's Aunt illegal stay.

Barack Obama saying that he does not know about his Aunt's illegal immigrant status in US is a joke and he does not sound honest. I say that because she has been rejected stay in US by Immigration Judge and it is hard to believe that Barack Obama would not have known about it.

1 - Obama's aunt is not in our country legally. He could have helped her, he did not.
2 - Obama has accepted campaign contributions from at least one documented illegal alien. How many more $'s are hidden in his coffer?
3 - How you treat your family is a sign of character.
4 - Your associations are a sign of your character.
