Statement from State Senator Dianne Wilkerson

October 29, 2008 04:06 PM Email| Comments (122)| Text size +

I would like the voters of the 2nd Suffolk Senate District to know that I am staying the course of my campaign for re-election on November 4. Not only does this represent the biggest challenge in my personal and political life, but it will test to the limit the notion of innocent until proven guilty.

While there is great curiosity about the particulars of my case I am not at liberty to discuss them for obvious reasons. For those of you who must be thinking "there has to be more to this story," of course there is. But it is not a story that I am able or willing to lay out in the press.

From a purely political perspective, it seems a lot of people -- including myself -- have seriously underestimated US Atty. Sullivan's political calculus.

In one fell swoop, and before an indictment had been returned, he sought to imperil my re-election campaign, and has set much of the state's Democratic Leadership back on its heels. He brought this issue forward at this time knowing full well that I would never have an opportunity to have my day in court prior to November 4.

I am grateful for and humbled by the support I continue to receive, and ask that voters continue to stick by me on November 4.

  1. you've got to be kidding...this woman has been a criminal for years-she was in a 1/2 way house for 30 days as a criminal... she lies and is incredibly arrogant. hopefully the voters will agree and the us attorney will throw her in jail

  1. Diane,
You have got to be kidding.... Your power went to your head. You thought you were above the law and paying taxes did not apply to you, along with your many other issues. Have you not tarnished "our" community enough? I have no faith in you.

  1. Wow! I guess those terrible FBI Agents with their cameras and recorders and cash must have nothing better to do than try to coerce and otherwise upstanding member of the Massachusetts Senate. Or maybe, just maybe, they caught her red handed AGAIN! Dianne, do your friends, family and everyone else a favor and just go away.

  1. This woman has no shame! She is either delusional, arrogant, or both, but it is time for Dianne Wilkerson to finally accept responsibility for her own actions, step aside, and think about the people of her District first. For once and for all, Dianne, go away!

  1. She is either stupid, arrogant or both. Then again, the people who keep sending her back to Beacon Hill are the stupid ones. As a Red Sox fan, I say three strikes you're out!!!

  1. Dianne, you do not have our support.

    Go away.

  1. Predictable. How can so many politicians still remain "neutral" in the 2nd Suffolk Senate race now?!?

  1. What happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? Wilkerson has been an excellent Senator for her district. If I lived in the district, I would vote for her unless she is proven to be guilty. She is certainly entitled to her day in court.

  1. It won't be long before we hear that the good senator was just gathering evidence and had planned to bring the case to the FBI

  1. She's not even on the ballot - the people of the 2nd Suffolk made their voices clear when they chose Chang-Diaz as the Democratic nominee for the seat rather than the Incumbent Senator Wilkerson! In this case, timing is not everything - supporters will continue to support the Senator as her opponents will continue to oppose - the only difference is the opposition now has one more reason to vote for another candidate.

  1. Diane,
As a proud Democrat, I am offended by your arrogance and complete disregard for honest public service. You are a disgrace to our party and the seat in which you are trying so desperately to retain. The public can only hope that if Senator Murray does not act to remove you from the Senate, this investigation leads to you being behind bars where you belong. Your sorry saga should have ended 10 years ago with the tax conviction.

Do you have no shame or sense of decency?

  1. These events being so close to Nov. 4th is an obvious indication of the divisiveness of an opposing agenda. I'm with you Diane! Look back throughout US History folks. Compare the stuggles Diane Wilkerson has taken on to others who have done so. The struggle for liberation seems to pose the greatest threat to those in power. Through all of this and all the years Sen. Wilkerson has never strayed from her values or from the struggle of all the invisible people.

  1. Time to bow out. Too late to do so gracefully but let it go. Even if it is true that "they" had it out for "you." Or that "they" have it out for "Black politicians." you took cash and didn't take care of your personal businesses. Black politicians should be more careful and more ethical because we fought too long to get what little we have.

    Let it go.

She will complain, loud and long, about how unfair and persecuting everyone was, toward her, and she will wave the banner of martyrdom in the direction of the credulous and those looking for "evidence" that they, too, are picked on and persecuted. Meanwhile, bigots galore will point to her as another example of the type of person they love to hate....

  1. I heard her on NPR last week, and from her statements on the radio and her comments today she obviously thinks the law and rules are not for her. She blames veryone else for her troubles. It is predictable that she claims it is a political vendetta, it is because of her race, it is because she is prominent etc etc. She did wrong and got caught ... again... and this time, hopefully, she will really suffer the consequences.

  1. THis is a very sorry story. A woman who had the talent and charisma to make a significant contribution to her community .....was caught up by her own greed. In spite of it all, Dianne Wilkerson has done some wonderful things that shouldn't be lost in this tragedy. It is so easy for politicians and others in power to believe that they are "special", the rules do not really apply to them, what they are doing is only what everyone else is doing, so what if I take a little more than I would normally be entitled to....???? A classic case of hubris....We are all poorer today because of this.

Posted by EMJ October 29, 08 05:10 PM
  1. What more could there be to the story except that made you take the money at gun point? What about the taped comments regarding "smoke and mirrors" and "pushing the envelope the furthest.."? I know there are other guilty parties in the State House that have taken much more than 25k, but that does not exonerate the Senator. I think the timing is important. People should know that there is an ongoing criminal investigation before an election. Hopefully, some day, one of the bigger players will make a mistake. If Arthur Anderson and ENRON can be taken down, none of the corrupt politicians are shielded. I do respect the Senator for her work in her community.

  1. No matter what you write, no matter what you say, this woman will not yield. Her perception has been seriously skewed, becoming decidedly disconnected from the people she once pledged to serve. Obviously, when one is caught ON VIDEO TAPE accepting money in exchange for influence BY AN UNDERCOVER FBI AGENT, this epitomizes the term " Red-Handed", but even this does not register as offending behavior with the State Senator. All the press releases and defense-attorney maneuvering in the world cannot change the FACTS. Hey, you can put lipstick on a pig, but..................................

Even now she touts the victim role- when her history shows she doesn't abide by the law- how ironic that she would choose such a public role. I wonder if some part of her unconsciously wanted to get caught and even go to jail. The worse part is what it does to the morale of her constituents in a day and age when faith in our government is all but gone.

When you didn't pay taxes, okay, you did some time at a halfway house.
When you used your campaign funds as personal income, okay, you paid some fines.
When you 'forgot' to pay your condo fees because the envelope slipped behind the dresser, okay, I figured you were administratively challenged, but...
There were yet more campaign fund indiscretions.
Then you're accused of lying under oath about your violent nephews.
And now this. Caught taking bribes, and who knows how many times you weren't caught.

How am I supposed to believe you didn't take bribe money from the Columbus Center developers to give them tax breaks they don't deserve?
How about bribe money from BU to build a BioLab in my neighborhood?
How can anyone trust you to be looking out for your constituents, when you are caught once again, taking care of Dianne? And what kind of suspicion does this cast on those legislators you work with, who did those backroom deals with you? Land deals, closed from public view? Holding up legislation that cost the city half a million dollars? Were you giving them a cut of your take? This is so disheartening, and yet you press on.

Sonia Chang Diaz is the only Democratic candidate, as far as I'm concerned.
Senator Wilkerson, I don't know what it takes for you to feel ashamed.

  1. Senator Wilkerson:

  1. Some of these comments expressing sadness and disappointment are right on the money. I feel the exact same thing. But others (like the one claiming this proves black women shouldn't be involved in politics, or the one that was signed 'Deval P.') are as offensive as the crime Dianne Wilkerson is accused of committing. Come on, people. Let's try and separate the anger at a public official who may have betrayed our trust (remember, innocent until proven guilty) from feelings about race and gender.

  1. Sen Wilkerson:
You were the trusted representative of a community that truly needed a champion. Look at what YOU have done to that community! YOU told Roxbury that YOU would be their voice on Beacon Hill, but you didn't tell them that they would have to pay to hear you speak for them. They needed someone to represent them, someone the poor could look up to, someone with morals and ethics and who succeeded in this life. You have failed every honest voter that you were there to help. The poor and under-represented people of Roxbury counted on you, and look what you gave them: Shame and Disgrace. How sad.

Last time I voted for Sonia.
Tuesday I will vote for Sonia.

At least one of my candidates will win!

Dianne - please do us all a favor and roll like a stone on all the other pols in this town that are directly on the take or trading favors for campaign donations.

I hope they make an example of her, and give her some serious prison time, and everyone else involved. I also hope the voters of this state clean house next tuesday.

  1. Dianes going to jail....that's a done deal. What troubles me is that she is the one that was caught. How many more of our politicians are playing this game? I don't know why I remain in this state sometimes. These people up on the hill just get to do whatever they want. It's not about public service it's about power...their power. After reading the affidavit, I got a pretty good taste of how the process works: wash my back, I'll wash yours...stick a finger in my eye and I'll cut you nose off. It's ALL about THEM and THEIR agenda and THEIR power. Ask yourself: how much respect do you have for a politician in this state???
    I have none.

  1. I am a supporter of Sen. Wilkerson, or was a supporter, the community has been asked not to rush to judgment. Last night I took the time to read the 32 page affidavit of Special Agent Corr. If Sen. Wilkerson took one dime from anyone she violated the public trust. We have been asked to stand by Sen. Wilkerson through her many issues with authorites and have. She has uses the race card cloak the real issue, her arrogance. She has accused some of putting her district up for sale, what does she call brokering the sale of Parcel 8. and taking money. I ask everyone to read the affidavit before rushing to judgment

  1. "Innocent until proven guilty" applies only in a court of law. In the court of *public opinion* she's GUILTY -- proven guilty by audio-video recordings plus her already long criminal record. Shame on any fool who votes for her.

Posted by QueenLiz October 30, 08 09:15 AM
  1. PEOPLE! What is wrong with all of you? You allow the media to try a case like this, you change the process of our legal system, which is already a mess! She has only been accused, haven't you ever been accused of something you didn't do, because perhaps the person accusing you had an agenda, or was simply an a$$? If any of you know anything about our legal system firsthand, it's very calculating and extremely shady. There is always an agenda, it's NOT AT ALL about justice.

Unfortunately, only until this happens to you do you ever truly find out how corrupt our justice system really is. I urge all of you to hold your opinions and allow her to have her day in court.

  1. Ward 14 Voter - police lie regularly, are actually taught and coaxed to lie, that's a fact. FBI agents are police. This affadavit was written by police. Sure, sounds too conspiratorial but if you live in her district, you must know about law enforcement and lying. The two go hand in hand.

  1. Oh Sarrin (comment #26), don't try to make this out to be another example of
'white folk jus' wanna keep black folk down'. The only thing she is interested in liberating is fat wads of cash. She, Wilkerson has shown time after time for years that she is not fit to uphold an office whose sole purpose is to serve the people. I get your comment about 'the invisible people' but it is about ALL of us, we the people...every race, color and creed. Not a good defense. Was she sharing her ill gotten gains with the 'invisible people' ?
Shame on her and every politician who has bankrupted and corrupted our society.

  1. Innocent until proven guilty yes... a picture tells a thousand words; she was caught on tape, was she collecting the cash for a charity in her community? ya right, she's a common criminal, and should be treated like one (when she is found guilty, of course). Pathetic.

Posted by threejobs October 30, 08 11:29 AM
  1. Well, I do think it's best to hear the case against Sen. Wilkerson before judging her guilty. However, I'm not surprised that this comment post is being used as a affirmative action ripping post, or perhaps if you checked out comments 51 & 96, just a opportunity to disrespect black women. I refuse to read anymore of the comments because sadly Boston has showed itself once again to be a haven of hatred. I still remember when our American Flag was used as a whipping stick. I'm sure someone out there is still grinning over that. Boston, acknowledge the commitment you have made to keeping hatred alive. Ms. Wilkerson deserves her day in court. Let it happen -

  1. Regardless of the truthfulness of this situation, the real fact that stands out is the sadness at the loss of potential for someone who could have used their influence and position to better the community and society as a whole. Is she the only one doing these deeds? I doubt it...one lone minority senator doesn't control the fate of things in Massachusetts, trust me. The real crime is withholding from the community something that we so badly need to fix what ails us. ACCESS! This person has access to the voices that have the power
to make change, and she is not allowing us to take advantage of that point.

  1. It amazes me how often we forget the GOOD one does and always remember the BAD. I hear very little about how she has helped the people, but she makes some mistakes and now you all consider her to be the Devil. The time we take to judge DW; we need to look into our own lives and think about some of our secrets. What happen to forgiveness? What happen to love? What happen to make us so HATEFUL? DW is no GOD! She is a human who makes mistakes like all of us. Yes, she should be accountable for her actions but she does not deserve all the name calling. You all should be ashame!
