Route 16 was shut down for about four hours today after a tractor-trailer rollover at Sweetser Circle in Everett, State Police said.

Traffic was diverted around the scene onto Route 99 and motorists were advised to seek alternate routes.

The tractor-trailer, which was carrying produce, crashed just before 3 p.m. The driver was indentified as Charles Kabeya, 41, of Ipswich, said Trooper Eric Benson, a State Police spokesman. Kabeya was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, Benson said.

The road was reopened at about 7 p.m., said Sergeant David Mahan, a State Police spokesman.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, police said.

Last December, a gasoline tanker overturned at the circle and spilled 9,400 gallons of gas, igniting an inferno that destroyed two three-decker houses and 21 vehicles.

  1. How many times does a truck have to tip over there before the traffic pattern is remedied? This area needs serious help. Wasn't the tanker truck enough of a wake up call?
All over the country there are "truck routes" that are created to avoid spots like this. Why not here?

  1. Sweetser Circle is a menace, not just to trucks. Cars pour in from Route 16 without so much as touching the brakes. ("Yield when entering rotary" means absolutely nothing.) Every time I have to go through there I'm terrified. Something has to be done!

  1. This circle is very dangerous. They seriously need to reconstruct it.

  1. Truck drivers especially need to watch their speed and slow down going around that rotary. Probably all accidents are caused by either speeding or drivers not yielding to the vehicles already in the rotary.
