Chet Hall of Royalston displays what he believes is a wild Russian boar

By Anne Baker, Globe Correspondent

Lancaster commuters got a startling sight on their trip to work: a view of what is believed to be a Russian wild boar.

A state trooper spotted the 200-pound animal lying alongside Route 2 in Lancaster around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday, said David Procopio, a spokesman for the State Police. Procopio said the reddish-brown boar was so large that the trooper initially thought it was a baby moose.

The trooper discovered the animal was badly injured, likely because it had been hit by a car, Procopio said. The trooper called for back-up. Authorities then redirected traffic and put the animal down, largely out of concern that it could wander into traffic and cause an accident, but also because the animal appeared to be in pain.

Chet Hall, a farmer in Royalston, arrived to claim the animal to use to bait coyotes, which he aggressively hunts. He identified the animal as a Russian wild boar because of its cinnamon-colored collar and rodent-like snout.

“It looked like a combination of a wild pig and a grizzly bear,” he said.

Hall said it was obvious to him that the animal was wild because of the condition of its tusks and feet. He said they are extremely aggressive animals and are hard to contain.

“This an animal with an attitude that most people wouldn’t even go near here,” he said.

Hall said he will not waste the animal and plans to make boar steaks and sausage.

Lisa Capone, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, confirmed that the animal was a wild boar. The animal likely escaped from a game farm because Massachusetts does not have a native, free-roaming wild boar population, she said.

Wild boars are considered exotic wildlife in the Commonwealth and require a permit, she said.

“It’s not at all likely we would issue a permit for a wild boar because it’s not an animal we’d want to escape,” she said.

  1. Does Chester Hall have any contact information? I'd be interested in buying some of those sausages or bacon if he ever butchers it.

  1. Those things can be big, Chester Hall sure will be brought to tusk.

Glad the troopers showed up to protect liberty and justice feral.

Sure is a mystery where it came from, but I'm sure they'll figure it snout.

I hope it wasn't mated, otherwise there's a family out there without someone to bring home the bacon.

Maybe from now on boars will realize it does not behoove them to go out on the roads. And if they do, slow down, it's worse when they're Russian.

  1. Dammit, my domesticated Boar, his name is bulldozzer, escaped from his pen on Tuesday. Now I know what type of fate he met. I had been feeding him toxic meat, so I would watch out if you plan on eating him.

HA! Chester, the great white coyote hunter. Must know one of the cops or been a listnin on his scanner to come from 'bout an hour away to get this boar. Now, if you're gonna shoot some dogs, what we need round-chea is a good pitbull and rottweiler hunt. They gittin' thick like flies lately.

  1. I bet Palin's not surprised we have Russian boars in Mass. After all, this is the anti-American part of the country - the real American boars are all down in small-town Ohio.

  1. This story raises more questions than it answer - is it common for people to claim road kill? how did the farmer from an hour away find out about the boar? is it legal to bait coyotes for hunting? how did Mr. Hall come to be so well versed in wild boars? do tell...

Posted by Tom October 24, 08 03:53 PM
  1. I guess Chet likes to kill stuff. Go get them coyotes Chet. Good boy.

Posted by Peter B. Kingman October 24, 08 03:53 PM

  1. Did anyone ever think to check this Russian Boar for his passport??......All you Illegals better think twice now!!

Posted by LOCKNLOAD October 24, 08 04:11 PM
  1. No really. I have lived here all my live and I never heard of a Russian Wild Boar. If it isn't part of that game farm in VT shouldn't we find out? Can't someone from the State Wildlife Dept go check it out before Chet puts it on a skewer to catch som coyotes? It is a little suspicious....a RUSSIAN boar...and Putin was just up over there, raised his head and there he is, it's Alaska...not Massachusetts. Maybe this is proof of Global Warming, species moving far from their normal habitats. Or maybe he took the Bridge To Nowhere.

  1. I suprised Sarah Palin didn't see the boar coming. After all, she can see its homeland from her house.

Posted by CocoPuff October 24, 08 05:22 PM
  1. Perhaps it was an old Soviet Boar instead of a Russian Boar. Then I could see it being drawn to the area by local politics...

    Posted by jpa1969 October 24, 08 05:23 PM
  1. Russian boars exist ONLY in two places in this country, a few ranches / game parks Texas and a private hunting preserve near Hanover NH. They were first introduced to this country in the late 1800's by Austin Corbin ( opened Coney Island) From the picture, it does NOT look like a feral pig or even a boar/pig mix ( they have white marking) so that means someone left the gate open in NH, and that was one lost tusker, too bad, a 200 pounder at that

Posted by Tusker Stalker October 24, 08 05:29 PM
  1. The animal's tusks can be used for lobotomy duty. Yup - just boar a hole through the cranium.

  1. Animals are not people they are food.
road kill is a common food source.
Coyotes are a pest that must be killed.
    City dwellers are so dumb

Posted by Tommy Thompson October 24, 08 05:33 PM
  1. Chet lives in my town, and news in wildlife circles travels fast, and yes it is most legal to hunt coyotes! If he wasn't shootin' them, there'd be so many up here we'd have no deer or dogs or turkey ...or children!!! ...Or local sheep, goats, Alpaca, etc, etc., etc.

Posted by Johnny and Debbie October 24, 08 05:52 PM
  1. A great idea for tracking and and shooting wild boars before they injure more motorists on The Commonwealth's highways......use State Police Helicopters......better yet, we could spare the boars' lives and use the helicopters to kill the coyotes instead.

  1. You had a 'honkin big wild bore' campaining for her running mate up in NH last week. Looks like she esacaped her handlers. Chances are that while she was trying to find a copy of 'The Economist' to read while she was in the can, she wandered into traffic. So sad.

  1. It was a gentleman such as this who took a big chunk of Odysseus' thigh out, the source (so he said) of the scar which he bares in Book XIX to the loyal nursemaid Eurykleia. Although the boar got the first lick in, Odysseus spears him, and he bleeds his life out on the rocky slope of Parnassus.
