UPDATE: Boston police arrest ex-firefighter
By John R. Ellement, Globe staff
Former Boston firefighter Albert Arroyo is being treated for depression and a back injury at a Boston hospital following his arrest this weekend for allegedly violating a restraining order obtained by his ex-girlfriend who said he has been harassing her for six years, according to court records.

“He constantly calls me at work harassing, at home, my parents, my siblings and my children,’’ the woman wrote in an affidavit when she got the restraining order from West Roxbury Municipal Court on Oct. 28. ”He does not stop threatening me, and verbally abusing me. He [has] said things like 'I am going to make you pay.' I am a nervous wreck and need protection. I no longer can live in fear.’’
She also wrote that Arroyo "follows me everywhere. For that reason, I am in fear of leaving my house. I keep my doors locked. I close my curtains because he looks up to my windows when not in my hallway.''
Arroyo was fired from the fire department earlier this year after failing to convince officials he was permanently disabled with a back injury despite competing in a body-building contest.
His attorney, Neil Osborne, said today the firing is the subject of a grievance filed by Arroyo’s union, Local 718 of the firefighters union. Osborne said he does not represent Arroyo in connection with his arrest on alleged domestic violence charges.
According to a Boston police report filed in court, police went to the woman’s home around 7:50 p.m. on Sunday after she reported seeing Arroyo lurking behind her Jamaica Plain residence. Officers did not find Arroyo at the scene.
Police later located Arroyo in the emergency room at Faulkner Hospital. They arrested him there, but when he claimed to be feeling ill, the hospital admitted him as a patient, according to the report.
Arroyo told an officer that “he was suffering from depression,’’ according to the report.
Initially, Arroyo was expected to be arraigned today on the domestic violence charges, but he has not yet been released from the hospital, police said this afternoon. Once out of the hospital, Arroyo has to be booked and is now expected to be arraigned Tuesday.
Arroyo applied to the Boston Retirement Board for a disability pension after reporting that he slipped on a staircase March 21. Dr. John Mahoney, a Dorchester neurologist, determined that Arroyo was "totally and permanently disabled," Mahoney said in a report to the board.
Despite the alleged injuries, Arroyo finished eighth at the 2008 Pro Natural American Championships on May 3. After the Globe published a picture of him during the body-building competition, fire officials ordered him to return to work. When he refused, he was dismissed.
Donovan Slack and Andrew Ryan of the Globe staff and Globe correspondent Matt Collette contributed to this report.

"Natural Bodybuilding" without steroids? I think not.
Despite Arroyo's lack of honor, this type of arrest should be considered alarming... one phone call, no evidence (as of yet), and he gets arrested based upon suspicion alone?
This guys is a total JOKE, he needs to go get a job at McDonalds, we do not want or need him in any fire department nor pay for his injury's that were most likely caused from lack of female companionship.
He needs to give back all the money he STOLE. Thats what he should be arrested for. Stealling everyone's tax money. He is a disgrace!
This is yet another example of "AFFIRMATIVE ACTION". The "A" word. Though the United States 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals says it's now illegal, the fine people of the City of Boston will continue to reap the benefits, for years to come, of this failed social experiment and Civil Service. The fine, hardworking, honorable, proud men and women of the Boston Fire Department (and Boston Police) must also bear the shame and burden for these Allstars. 99% of our Departments' members are honorable, hardworking, caring members that (want to) love our jobs. The Mayor and our Departments have known about these members for decades. Their crimes and cowardice have been hidden and protected since 1974. Civil Service protects them. They can't be fired and they know it. If there's an attempt at discipline; it's racist or profiling (just like poor Diane Wilkerson...). Take your heads out of the sand. We all look bad and bear the cold hard stares and disgust of our neighbors. What happened to merit, honor, accountability, and responsibilty? Mayor Tom Menino and current Fire Commissioner Frazier need to cease entertaining and bowing to Social commentary and "Community" organizers (a.k.a. Diane Wilkerson, Charles Yanci, Chuck Turner, Karen Miller/Vulcan, etc.). A rallying cry and frequent charge by these same community organizers is nepotism and a "Good ol Boys" network. Let me be clear; it just doesn't exist in Boston. It can't. Members are screened, vetted, and hired by Civil Service; under the very watchful eyes of these same "Community Organizers". There are hundreds of City of Boston kids that would give their right arm to be a Boston Police Officer or Boston Fire-Fighter. This is further evidence that our Departments and City Residents must demand that Police and Fire-Fighter Candidates are hired based on merit not skin color and feel-good policies.
Well isn't this a surprise?!? NOT. Just adds to what an idiot he really is. Too bad he has to scare innocent women. With such a back injury, I am surprised that he could "hide" without being in too much pain. He sure can get around. He must be making his family so proud. He is one sick person who needs help, in more ways than one. Does he have insurance still from the State or are we paying for his ER visits for his bad back.
What's the difference between this guy and Democratic Senator Marzzilli? Nothing- except Marzilli is still on the payroll of YOU, the tax payer- Let's Vote No on #1 and keep paying Marzilli (and Obama's criminal auntie too; who is here illegally; YOU are paying her rent to live here illegally.) $$$ Come on, do your Patriotic duty! Spread your wealth around!
what happened to all the comments from this morning? Is there censorship here?
This clown and Wilkerson would be a match made in heaven.
about time he was arrested. plus he does not deserve the disability retirement. He is capable of working. And stalking a woman when he is married, that has gone too far. He won't know what is coming to him and i hope he gets punished for this ok. from pam
Wait, let me guess - Arroyo is claiming that his physique is a result of "all natural" training, right?
Glad to see our tax money is being spent to support this guy and prosecute as well....
I am so sick of it!
What is going on with people in Boston? Wilkerson, DiMasi, now this clown -- all demanding special treatment... Is there something in the water?
this clown Arroyo is the poster boy for why you should vote yes on question 1
Black guy does something wrong and it's the result of AFFIRMATIVE ACTION??? I think not. It's called poor upbringing and that doesn't strike along racial lines. For such a "liberal" and forward thinking place I see and hear some of the most ass backwards comments coming out of the mouths of people in Boston. And I suppose a white Boston police or fireman never tried to get away with a disability claim?
What's come about of Dr. John Mahoney, the Dorchester neurologist who claimed Arroyo was disabled? Didn't he also "diagnose" other people in the Fire or Police Depts? (and why would anyone choose a neurologist for back issues anyway?)
pappy,
how in the name of God would voting yes on question 1 help in prosecuting Arroyo? DiMasi? WIlkerson? It's not a cure all, it's not even based on fact. With all the "Vote yes on 1" voices on this board, I am shocked that Carla Howell wasn't elected governor! This is her baby, after all. Her numbers are fictional, but don't let that stop you.
That said, Arroyo belongs behind bars, and should NOT get a disability pension--he can body build but not lift a CLIPBOARD? Come on. Keep him behind bars, he belongs there.
I'm so tired of reading about his moron! Go away!!
just another reason to vote yes on question 1.
Loser about time he gets arrested. BUT who is paying for his hospital stay?! Are we paying again for this guy? He should have to repay evrything that was paid out to him. I'm sure he doesn't have any health insurance and was admitted in the ER..
Oh boy, we are still paying for this low life.
bob dillon jr. never heard of corrupt white guys I guess. What a dunce. His teachers would be embarrassed reading his post I'm sure. This is a sad story but we shouldn't condemn the fire dept. There are bad apples everywhere. Let justice take its course.
So, the article has changed a bit since I first read it. Now not only is this slime ball suffering from a bad back, he is saying he is depressed?? Well, I am depressed too with all the money he is costing me. I would never joke about depression, but how convenient he has another symptom to say he is suffering from. He sure knows some key phrases. You are making yourself out to be more of a jerk than people orignally thought, if that is even possible.
Don't worry about this guy. He'll get a BIG pension from you good taxpayers as do so many who fake injury or insult in the world of litigation.
Dora, You choose a neurologist because some times back pain is caused when there is compression or damage to the spinal cord or one of the nerves (a common one is the sciatic nerve).
I wish I was disabled enough to not work and correct free paychecks and look like that! I would have thought his working out would suffer being "disabled".
Seems like the doctor is really the one to be held accountable here and yet I have not heard one word about pursuing litigation against him - you can't get disability unless a doctor signs on the dotted line!
Again, Mass. has become a third world country in the context of patronage, corruption, and back door dealings.
From my standpoint there is only one was to even slow this down and that is to vote yes on question #1, otherwise it will be business as usual in a very short time and we will have no one to blame but ourselves.
lets put Wilkerson and Arroyo in the same cell
great role models for the minority youth of Boston
how do you spell ARROGANCE
just another example of a state employed hack
and this is just of one of them
thousands of them out there retiring from false medical conditions
Vote Yes on Question 1 and you will begin the end of alot of this.
If you are a family member of a firefighter or sympathetic with firefighters, no need to read on...
I don't trust anything this prick firefighter (Arroyo) says or does. This stalking of a girlfriend or whomever may be a ruse so that he could "conveniently" be arrested with his so-called, career debilitating back injury.
As a young adult, I personally witnessed, in front of my very own eyes, the collapse of the brick facade of the old Hotel Vendome, killing numerous firefighters who were true and loyal to their duties.
What I witness today is a bunch of drunk, drug using, union protected misfits who use the system for financial, career and social gain for which they are not worthy or fit. That seems to the mold of today's Boston firefighter. Many
are cowardly using the shield and reputation of hundreds of brave F.D.N.Y. firefighters to pursue their own, phony, and unworthy honor.
Arroyo and the others are not worthy of such honor, dignity or career ending reimbursement. For the sorrow for which I have had to live, the rest of my life having witnessed the bravery and death of your predecessors, you can go to hell.
I'm tired of seeing American Flags waving on the back of trucks being staffed by drunk, marijuana or other drug using firefighters.
The series of Boston Globe article over the past year substantiates my allegations.
haha, Boston is as Racist as ever, haha, i'm glad i left ..... yeah yeah, you are glad i left, but if you are racist and don't like blacks, asians, latinos etc. you will go to hell or if you do go to heaven, you will realize that God is an Asian Guy. haha, and don't laugh, i went to Boston Latin School and Boston College, grew up in Allston, Dorchester. worked at a local mutual fund company before moving to Texas. even compared to Texas, Boston is the MOST racist city on Earth.
oh, Ben from Texas again. i don't like the guy in this story, he's a bum. but if a white guy did this and yes, white guys have done similar things, no one would call for MORE affirmative action. and also, Wilkerson is a shame, yes, but so are the hundreds of mega corrupt white Boston politicians over the decades, remember that most of them were Irish, and i think Irish people are cool. again, Boston is the most racist city on earth.
