Thieves pried open the rear door of a bank in Braintree overnight, sawed into an ATM machine, and stole an unspecified amount of cash, police said.

Before breaking into the Citizen's Bank on Granite Street, wires were cut outside, severing a communication link to police. The intruders then broke down a fire escape door and removed a video recorder, which rendered surveillance cameras useless, police said in a press release.

Officers responded the scene shortly after 1 a.m. to investigate the communication failure at the bank. Police discovered the cut wires outside, and inside the officers saw smoke, which prompted them to notify the fire department. The smoke, however, was actually debris from the metal cutting tool used to split open the ATM machine.

Police did not report making any arrests.

  1. Get used to this type of story as more and more people lose thier jobs. Desparate acts of desparate people.

  1. .........yep, I'll say it again- security devices keep out honest people. If your motivation is to do something illegal, you'll find a way somehow!

  1. Looks like police took their sweet old time responding to the communication failure.

  1. Inside job or someone who knows that branch pretty intimately, I'd say.

  1. I think that the police figured that it was just some sort of communication problem and did not repsond as fast as they probally could of, I fell like this is all mayor menino's fault, pay them more and they will do a better job, get your head back into what this city needs most and that is help and support with our youth, you have forgotten all about them and guess what there is more to life than just real estate and getting your name engreaved everywhere. I used to like you alot and now I will not vote for you unless you change

  1. Guys with some skills and brains did this crime- not the usual flotsam. Probably laid off construction and utility workers is my guess. Knew response times, knew which lines to cut, and knew how to use a blow torch.

  1. Desperate acts of desperate people? I didn't rob a bank when I got laid off. Instead of planning a bank robbery I started looking for a new job.

  1. I would be interested in kowing the difference in time between when the Alarm company reported the communication failure and when the police actually responded.

  1. The story neglects to say that this has been happening all over the South Shore. Citizens in Stoughton (Cobbs Corner) & a Pembroke are just a few of the other towns that have been hit!

  1. This is not the act of desperate people! These people are criminals who know what they're doing. Even though there is more police, they do detail work rather than police work. And get used to it: there will be more crime!

  1. ATM machine? Automatic Teller Machine Machine? Really?

  1. I agree.
    People are hurting all over.

  1. I have mixed feelings about this publication of the details of how the thieves defeated all the protective countermeasures taken by the bank. Maybe it's obvious, maybe not. It seems, though, that this act and its reportage toll the death-knell of video cameras and land lines as a means of protecting ATM's, a decisive battle lost in the arms race. It may have just been a matter of time until the efficacy of the bankerless bank as a target surpassed its convenience and efficiency, and that time seems now. The prev. commentator ("The Man") is right, too.

  1. This looks well planned and well rehearsed, probably a professional robbery. I doubt it has anything to do with people losing their jobs.

  1. Yes, the economy does make people more desperate. But, until we start to see ships being attacked by pirates off of Cape Cod, I can't say that the populace has moved towards smash & grab anarchy (L.A. riots). Bank robberies are fairly common. At least this was a break-in, and didn't involve threats or actual use of deadly force (armed robbery).

  1. "Typical Customer " couldnt be less typical... what the hell is this,.. a disertation on how many big words you can use while describing a bank robbery? You are probbaly one of the lowlifes out their that abused the financial system for gain and then stood/stand around pretending you didnt do it? Either that or you are a over-educated under-acheiver with nothing better to do than try and impress the rest of us with big words... get a life or a job, either will do.

  1. From Robyn West:
"I fell like this is all mayor menino's fault, pay them more and they will do a better job," ???

I didn't know that Menino was the mayor of Braintree too.

  1. No arrests? No Kidding

Obviously if the crooks weren't there when police FINALLY arrived how in god's grren earth would they be able to arrest them?

Good thing the banks insured because Braintree's finest couldn't find sunshine during daylight with both hands and thier flashlites

Posted by RichCarn November 17, 08 10:40 AM
  1. To Robyn West......Mayor Menino is NOT the mayor of Braintree. Please read before making stupid comments.

  1. there is no excuse for robbing a bank. sorry, losing your job is not acceptable. there was a dead spot in communication with the bank and police response to that did not come until after 1....why?

Posted by ryan November 17, 08 10:43 AM
  1. I found ALL of these comments to be particularly lame.

I'm sorry but I'm giving all of you a D+

Braintree is not part of Boston.

"I have mixed feelings about this publication of the details of how the thieves defeated all the protective countermeasures taken by the bank. Maybe it's obvious, maybe not. "
--- Criminals make it their business to know this sort of thing, and it's pretty obvious even to us straight folk. They have formal and informal networks to buy/sell/chat the info around. They know more about the bank security than most bank employees.Besides that, what they published is pretty much common sense.

  1. Hey Robyn, I have a complicated question for you. How is a robbery in Braintree mayor Menino's fault? He isn't the Governor, he is the mayor of Boston. It's amazing how many people have no idea what is going on around them.

    Posted by Tom D November 17, 08 10:52 AM
  1. I think you should read this again Robyn.......Mayor Menino is the mayor of Boston.....NOT Braintree. He does not pay the Braintree Police Dept.

Posted by Scotto November 17, 08 10:54 AM
  1. DEFINITELY a well thought out plan by people (or criminals) that have higher IQ's than most. Something like that isn't just a hack job you plan over night. "Hey Jim, lets go cut open the local ATM...", "Derrrr, okay Bob..."

ATM's alone are nearly bomb proof. So someone did their homework, and did it well. I would also think if somebody were planning a job like that, they would EXPECT police pressence and were most likely armed to the teeth... Lucky officers saved their own lives by not responding quicker.

  1. I love it. An FDIC insured Bank's communication lines can be cut with no back-up. Someone cuts the one that monitors my house and it reroutes immediately, via wireless. I pay less than $300/year for the entire plan. Those guys should pat themselves on the back and deposit 1/2 of that money back in the same bank just for laughs.

  1. Putting aside the issue of theft for a moment, what really is criminal is how the Globe's editing has declined so much over the years. At one time, every editor who worked the slot knew that robbery was the crime of seizing property through violence or intimidation directed at the victim. That is, robbery is taking the property of another by means of force or fear. One can not, therefore, "rob" a bank that is closed and unoccupied because real estate - the bank building, in this case - is incapable of being placed in fear of violence or force.

  1. There is no backup systems? What kind of security is that?

I'm no Menino fan, but I am sure this happened in in Braintree... Please practice reading using the boston herald workbook.

  1. To Robyn (Post #5),

I'm no big fan of Mumbles Menino myself sweetheart, but last I checked, he was the Mayor of Boston not Braintree, so this one really can't be blamed on him.

  1. Banks don't lose any money the government just gives them back anything they lose, so I say if you don't hurt any of the employees then more power to them.

  1. When police FINALLY ARRIVED?! I find these people's statements erroneous. Being a police officer on the south shore AND on duty last night, I'll have you know that the police were called about the bank at 130am and the first officer was on scene within one minute. How do I know that? OH YEAH, I heard it all go down on the radio...Know your stuff before posting this garbage about cops not doing their job.

  1. "Police did not report making any arrests."
How long does it take to investigate an audible alarm, report of communication loss, suspicious activity at a very visible location on a main road?
These thieves knew what they were doing when they targeted Braintree.
Look at the history of unsolved crimes in Braintree; it would be easier to count the crimes that have been solved.
Braintree's finest at work - protecting and defending; themselves and their paychecks.

  1. Besides being amused by some of the responses, in particular Robin West's, it kind of makes me wonder if the finger can eventually be pointed at the Braintree Police. Slow response time because of a shortage of police officers working at 1am? Not enough cops on patrol getting taxpayers overtime due to hard economic times? Either way, whatever the case may be, no backup systems, slow response time, and also no one driving on Granite Street at 1am (which is still fairly populated at that time) happened to notice people in the bank? Come on now. Good thing I use Bank of America.

Posted by CommonSense November 17, 08 01:21 PM
  1. this was in Braintree which has nothing to do with the city of Boston. All cops are lazy people.... come on.

    And turtles are nice.

  1. The banks steal 700 billion from "We the Taxpayers" and it's no big deal. A group of people take a couple of bucks of it back from the banks and they're the criminals? You would think from these posts that the "criminals" stole money from the banks customers themselves. There is something majorly wrong with the way we as a collective society think. Don't forget to vote to re-elect Menino mayor of Braintree!!!!!

  1. joe sullivan is the mayor of this city robyn, hes a good mayor though

the bpd is slightly slow though, they concentrate too much other smaller petty crimes than ones like these for instance teen drinking or teens in general. this city needs to get its act together i mean this bank is in five corners near the south shore plaza almost where all major highways meet...how on earth do people get away with something like this?

Posted by anonymous November 17, 08 02:03 PM
  1. Bobbee Anderson you're a dope. Do you have locks on your front door? The prisons are filled with bad guys nailed with security systems.

  1. Unfortunately, the Braintree Police are extremely busy at all hours keeping the criminal scum from Roxbury, Dorchester et al. from ripping off the Plaza, Best Buy and other such place. I guess these scum, finding the mall closed, moved on to something other. Stop bashing the police, it is these scumbags that are the problem.
