An unidentified Brockton man is fighting for his life at a Boston hospital after being badly burned Wednesday when his clothes were ignited by a fire he had started to keep himself warm, according to the state Fire Marshal's office.

The man is homeless and was behind a building in the 300 block of Montello Street when he apparently fell asleep, said Jennifer Mieth, spokeswoman for State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan. State Police are assisting the Brockton Fire Department in the investigation.

"It appears that a homeless man had an outdoor campfire and was trying to say warm,'' she said. "He fell asleep, got too close to the fire, and his clothing ignited.''

The man's identity was not immediately available. Mieth said the man is a medically induced coma at a Boston hospital and has not yet been interviewed by investigators.

He was found Wednesday afternoon, when temperatures in Brockton hovered around freezing, but the wind chill was 26 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

  1. Well, at least he has a hospital bed as a home now at the expense of MA taxpayers.

  1. Geez, your reaction takes my breath away. Have we really become so cold that the only reaction to someone catching fire is that his care is now on our dime?

  1. Wow, such a careless act leads to injury. This guy needs to find a homeless shelter to stay in.

  1. What a cruel comment to make...God knows why he became homeless, have some pity on him and the condition he's in...Apparently he wasn't getting food stamps and lounging around all day, like so may others. It could happen to you as well, learn some kindness towards others.

  1. Jeremy - I think its easy to assume this poor man would rather be unburned and not in a medical enduced coma than resting in a hospital bed. Thats an ignorant and idiotic comment to make.

  1. Heaven help us all if we can hear a story like that and respond with such an egregious lack of compassion or humanity.

  1. Keep your evil thoughts to yourself. "What goes around, comes around". With the way this economy is going and the jobless rates at 5.5% in MA, you could be next. This poor man doesn't deserve to be burned or in a medical induced coma. Don't judge until you can walk in his shoes. Shame on you.

  1. People are people ,Being HOMELESS is not what ANYONE WANTS ! Have you NOTICED THE ECONOMY ? My goodness the Holidays are upon us and the almighty Dollar is all some ignorant wonders think about ?
What ever happened to "Good Will Towards ALL MEN"..
There are MANY REASON"S WHY PEOPLE END UP HOMELESS ...Do not assume it is always drugs....
My Thoughts and Prayers go out to this Gentleman ,I hope he recovers soon and does not end up back on the street.

  1. I will pray for this man, and I will pray for Jeremy and Will, seems to me that this man is better off than you, I would much rather be burnt on the out side, than all ugly and black and heartless on the inside. I hope that you never walk in his shoes because you would not deserve our compassion.

  1. Could happen to anyone of us, with jobs being lost, homes being foreclosed, unemployement way up, lack of funds for housing, clothing, and food. Most are just one paycheck away from homelessness. Soon we'll all be killing one another for water, food, and gas (like the mel gibson movie, mad max). one should appreciate having the necessaties, its becoming more rare each day.
god bless america, and our freedom

  1. Some of you people are sick!!! This man is trying to servive. why not give him a break we did AIG. There still spending are tax money the wrong way. Maybe the goverment should pay attention to people that need help not the people who cry for help like these banks and companys

  1. I cannot believe some the cruel and cold comments people have posted on this site. I am glad that my taxpayer money is going towards his recovery! I hope he recovers and is offered the help he needs.

  1. I find it odd that people are more bothered that a homeless man is getting helped by our tax dollars rather than the millions spent to provide Social Security benefits to the so called Disabled. (I'm not saying that all on Disablility aren't legitimate but unfortunately the majority isn't legitimate)

  1. cookiecake, why don't you go run to the hospital and give him a sponge bath if you're so concerned.

  1. We need more shelters, more resources and more people who are willing to help. Not just volunteers, we need social workers, advocates, mental health personnel, landlords and lawyers to commit to the cause of ending homelessness. When we all step outside of our doors today and say "Damn it's cold," be thankful to know you have somewhere to go when it gets just too unbearable.

  1. JY, there is a homeless shelter 7/10 of a mile from where he was found. This is an issue of lack of housing and supportive services as many would rather live on the streets than go to a shelter. Taxpayers often think it is cheaper to ignore our homeless brethren but in reality it saves thousands/yr to give them the love and support they need and we all reap the benefit of having a community to live in that we can be proud of.

  1. I have experienced the misery of homelessness at several points in my life and, although there is a certain sense of freedom to it, it is a dangerous and miserable lifestyle that is hard to rise out of. Contrary to popular belief, most homeless did not become so out of choice. Most did not become homeless because they are lazy, stupid, or immoral. Many homeless people are victims of abuse in the form of neglect and abandonment by their parents or other caregivers. Like many victims of abuse, a lot of them have chemical dependency problems. Their existence is so miserable that they use alcohol or other drugs as an escape. Some of them are simply victims of life’s tragedies, such as hurricanes, fires, or other catastrophes from which they simply don’t have the resources to recover. Also, there is a snowball effect that occurs with homelessness. After all, who is going to hire someone with no address? Most homeless people don’t have the resources to even do their laundry; who is going to hire someone in filthy clothes? Also once a person has fallen to the level of living on the streets it is very difficult for them to get a job even if they are capable of working, because the condition of homelessness creates a low sense of self-esteem which makes it difficult to relate to other people. It is difficult to find, much less keep a job once a person’s self-esteem is so badly damaged. I invite you to my website: www.FreetheGods.com. There you will find pictures I have taken of homeless people. I always give them a dollar or two for the privilege of photographing them. Usually, I am surprised by their cheerfulness and sense of pride. Often, they will show themselves to have some kind of talent. There is a fine line between genius and insanity.
