A beaming Governor Deval Patrick met with reporters today after his return from Chicago and reiterated that he has no interest in a post in President-elect Barack Obama's administration.

After speaking about being "enormously moved and excited and proud" of Obama's electoral landslide, Patrick said definitively that he did not want to return to the White House.

"Are you asking me if I am going to Washington again?" Patrick asked, rephrasing a reporter's question. "No I am not. We have an ambitious agenda and a lot of work to do here. Frankly if the people will have me, I'd be interested in a second term."

Patrick did say, however, that he expected the ranks of his own administration to thin because of Obama appointments.

After witnessing the record turnout Tuesday morning in Massachusetts, Patrick flew to his hometown of Chicago for Obama's victory rally. In a speech to hundreds of thousands in Grant Park, Obama echoed a refrain that Patrick employed in his 2006 gubernatorial run.

"It turns out that 'Yes we can' is more than a political slogan," Patrick said today. "In fact, many of us believe that 'Yes we can' is an assertion of American character. That was affirmed yesterday."

Patrick and his wife, Diane, listened to the speech under a tent reserved for politicians and other luminaries, such as the actor Brad Pitt. "Diane kept saying, would you just go over and introduce yourself," Patrick said with a laugh about Pitt.

The governor did not say hello to the actor, however, because he "just wanted to absorb" the victory of Obama, whom he spoke with briefly. Patrick told Obama he was "proud of him as a candidate" because he "spoke without apology about hope."

When asked by a reporter, Patrick said he was "not pushing a change" in state law so he could appoint someone to fill a vacant US Senate seat instead of holding a special election. When Senator John F. Kerry was running for president in 2004, the Democratic state Legislature changed the law to require a special election rather than allow Republican Governor Mitt Romney to appoint a possible successor. Kerry's name has recently been mentioned as a candidate for Secretary of State in Obama's administration.

Patrick said he was "relieved" that voters decided overwhelmingly to reject a ballot initiative that would have repealed the state income tax. The governor also said his administration was reaching out to district attorneys and law enforcement officials about the "implementation" of a ballot initiative that decriminalized possession of an ounce or less of marijuana. Patrick's answer seemed to indicate that he did not plan to fight the measure.

The state secretary of Labor and Workforce Development will work with employees from two of the state's tracks after voters banned dog racing in Massachusetts, Patrick said.

  1. Is he completely insane? After almost 2 years of failing to deliver on every promise he made to get elected, he wants to be re-elected? I"m curious to see if Obama follows through on any of his promises too. I sure hope so. Only time will tell.

I'm sure Deval will advertise this as one of his spending cuts...

  1. HAHA! That is like Bush asking for a 3rd term...are you kidding me? "I did nothing as governor, but I'd like you to continue to pay me to do nothing for another term"...oh yes, sure, why not..."yes we can"...can what?... pay you for nothing?

  1. Of course deval wants to stay gov he hasnt had to work a single day in 2 years. Obama has already said not to expect change right away, or in the first year, or to expect to much done in the first term. not to mention he used lines from Malcom X's by any means neccesary speech.....Hmmmm

  1. Patrick has been a joke. I voted for him two years ago and can't believe how he has gotten nothing done so far. His only push was for the casinos and DiMasi blocked it.

Posted by ed November 5, 08 04:53 PM
  1. Yea, whatever....he will get the heck out of dodge so fast if he is asked. Good riddance.....he's useless here, he will be useless in Washington.

Posted by cr November 5, 08 04:57 PM
  1. Patrick can do what he wants because of DiMasi and his crooked posse. Get rid of them and things can get done. We've already got rid of one, we need to keep cleaning.

  1. After he failed to convince fellow Republicans that he was a suitable presidential candidate, there is no doubt in my mind that Mitt Romney will be back to challenge Deval Patrick for governor of Massachusetts.

So Romney will take what he can get and shoot for the governorship of his home state again, likely on the platform that he passed the nation's first successful state-wide health care initiative, and on the platform of overturning the new dog racing ban.

  1. He's obviously being coy and waiting for an opening for a Supreme Court nomination.

  1. Dear Gov. Patrick,

Please go to Washington DC. Oh, and take Kerry with you as well.

    Thank-you.

  1. I personally feel he has been a good governor for the state. Hopefully at some point a casino will finally be in the commonwealth to bring in money.

You can not say he has not been trying.

  1. TBone you are an idiot.

The $1B biotech initiative is one of the most important pieces of legislation to help the local economy here. He also fought hard for the Casinos to help boost State revenue but DiMasi and his crooked agenda blocked him. Now Patrick is dealing with budget cuts which most states are suffering from. You think Kerri Healey would have been a better choice?

  1. Are you people out of your minds? We just came off The Romney Debacle and Patrick is just beginning to figure out just how bad off things were when he got into office. Add the economy now (which is not Patrick's fault obviously) and he has a pile of stuff to deal with. Give the guy a chance, he's smart and now with a new mandate nationally, perhaps we can get Massachusetts in line, too. Things take time, can't turn a oil tanker on a dime either.

Posted by Jammer November 5, 08 06:44 PM
  1. Wow..listen to you fools..you voted for him! Now we have to pay for his legal fees, his caddie, his mansion in Milton...and now we will have to pay for Wilkersons legal fees, her pension, her Mansion...all because you voted no on question 1, good job! And now you voted for Obama....great, good job Mass. You never learn. The Biotech industry could use you alright..as test subjects on how people become so dumb!

  1. Obama is the candidate of hope, right? My hope was that if he actually did get elected, at least he'd take Deval with him, so we wouldn't have to wait another two years to give him the boot. Deval, "Yes, You can! (leave)"

  1. Emoto: Why would anyone want Deval back?

I'm guessing you don't even know half of the things I list below...

$1b biotech initiative (incl support for stem cell research)
    global warming solutions act
    MA back in RGGI
    support for Cape Wind
continuing reform of comprehensive health care
    support for gay rights
    closing tax loopholes for corporations
    Green communities act
Education: Commonwealth 10 year plan and early education bill
    gun violence act
    Bridge Repairs throughout commonwealth

All while balancing the budget in a time of fiscal crisis – I’d take him over Romney any day….

  1. Deval Patrick is a weak leader who hasn't delivered on his promise of a property tax cut. Not only have property taxes gone up, but home values have gone down. Governor Patrick tolerates a culture of corruption at the State House. He was an accessory to the Cognos deal by acceding to Speaker DiMasi's demands to funnel a multi-million technology contract to DiMasi's cronies. And he enabled the bribe-taking and shakedowns of Diane Wilkerson by enthusiastically backing her for re-election.

I miss Mitt Romney. He was a real outsider who kept his promises and fought the insiders on Beacon Hill.

  1. Hey GB - the governor doesn't legislate spending, the spendaholic legislature does. So, if cadillac "inherited overspend", he inherited it from his fellow democrats-a collection of clowns who has never seen a spending boondoggle they don't like. Romney issued hundreds of millions of dollars in spending vetoes, most of which were overturned by the legislature. Cadillac however, redid his office to the tune of $27,000 ($12,000 for drapes), hired a chief of staff for his wife, opened a $450,000 DC office, increased his office budget to $9 million, nearly $4 million over fiscal year 2007. Ya, great job deval.

  1. Way to go Deval! Too often we've had governors who treated the job as a stopover, nursery or just simply a joke. No names but they've all been Republican. By staying the Governor is showing that he thinks the people of Massachusetts are worth governing.

  1. Deval, please take the job in D.C., because I don't believe your going to be re-elected. I'm happy to hear that we can thin the ranks in the State House so we can cut out some fat (big salaries)from the budget. Good call!

Posted by hamey November 5, 08 10:10 PM
  1. If he really wanted to lead by example, he would not have collected his salary, like Romney and Healy, especially in this time of a budget crunch. Instead he buys $12,000 curtains and a $50,000 caddy. Do as I say and not as I do. He is a fraud who would never get reelected.

  1. Coupe Deval should instead be picked as Secretary of the Interior, since he has a lot of experience with interior decorating. Imagine how he can pimp out the White House! Also, the offical government security vehicle can be changed from the Ford Explorer to the Escalade.

  1. I don't know what is worse -- hearing that Patrick may not go to Washington or reading the pathetic Patrick apologist posts here for this article.

Hey Deval, you are a one term governor. Just go, and take that opportunist elitist Kerry with you. Mmmkay?

  1. I want deval gone as much as the next guy but how is taking his poor governing skills and sending it to washington a good thing? We are upset with him so the whole country would have to suffer? And really... would Tim Murray be any better?

Posted by Brian November 6, 08 06:30 AM
  1. Actually, I think it'd be a hoot for Deval to stick around MA, given all of the political upheaval this state should experience soon. Diane Dubya was just the first head to roll of many...should be an interesting two years.

  1. To those of you who would like to see Romney back in MA., think about his making MA the butt of his jokes when he was running for Pres. (Washington Post). Think also about his "revelations" re. equal rights for gays and "choice" for women when he decided to run for Pres.

If you do think about these things, you'll understand why MA natives call him "Slick."

  1. Patrick has made major, commendable contributions in the areas of clean energy and life sciences (to name a few) and has worked enormously hard to unite a legislature led by a corrupt Speaker. Patrick has also closed major tax loopholes and has made major advancements in civic engagement and education. Give the Governor some time to let these initiatives bear fruit. Anyone who thinks Governor Patrick is not working hard is simply not tuned in. Make no mistake: A job in Washington would be vacation for Governor Patrick, and I admire his willingness to stick it out here when the economy has gotten so bleak.

As a side note, the extent to which these posts become a forum for bigotry is shameful. Reasonable people can disagree on many of these issues, but the extent to which blatant racism permeates these posts is simply nauseating.

  1. While I am skeptical that Deval is staying, as I believe he'll get a supreme court nod once one opens up, it never ceases to amaze me how people spit venom at him.

Patrick has been a perfectly effective governor. Other users have already listed many of his accomplishments. As will be the case with President Obama, Deval wasn't able to make everything change the morning he was sworn in. These things all take time. He'll probably need a 2nd term (which I believe he'd be elected to) to complete them.

Remember, the most successful term for FDR was the 3rd.

  1. Ok you geniuses, if Patrick leaves, who would you recommend bringing in as the new Governor? That's what I thought. Mitt Romney spent most of his time out state with the Mormons to prepare his run for the White House. I agree there is a lot of corruption in the state house and it needs to be cleaned up but I don't think Patrick is crooked.

  1. A second term? Good luck with that, Governor. Have you been paying any attention at all as to what the folks here in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts think of you? Even those who were tricked into voting for you have finally come around and see through the thin veneer that you and your handlers managed to slop on you. You're nothing more than another empty suit in Massachusetts politics (or in the case of Sen. Terese Murray, an empty pants suit).

Posted by Ground November 6, 08 09:30 AM
  1. you have to win a second term.... and to be truthfully honest, your ability to do that is questionable.... Take the job security and GO!

  1. Hey genius EJ - no one is "brought in" as Governor - Tim Murray would take over as Governor if Patrick left, and someone would be appointed in his place as Lt. Governor.

And Patrick isn't crooked? As marie said in Post #31 - "redid his office to the tune of $27,000 ($12,000 for drapes), hired a chief of staff for his wife, opened a $450,000 DC office, increased his office budget to $9 million, nearly $4 million over fiscal year 2007. " Interesting all that SPENDING going on isn't it, when people are losing their jobs, homes, companies are leaving the Commonwealth for other states.........how can people not see this one-party system in MA is NOT good? Except for those elected to their terms over and over and over again, like Dianne Wilkerson and Sal DiMasi, et al?

  1. I find it interesting that so many people don't like him now, yet very enthusiastically voted for him. It's one thing to vote for him as the lesser of two evils (who's worse, Patrick or Healey?), but I think it's interesting that so many people actually believed the crap that came out of his mouth and are now surprised that he can't deliver. He might as well have told you everyone was getting $1M and a puppy. You cannot significantly increase benefits and government spending, while cutting taxes, unless you issue an enormous amount of debt. Clearly our little state can't support a lot of debt service.

  1. About the $450,000 D.C. office... clearly anyone who puts this down as "wasteful spending" has no idea how the American system of federalism works. Do you even know what the D.C office does? Clearly not. Because if you did, you would know how much federal money it has brought to the Commonwealth. You think the people in Congress care about how much funding the state gets? You think the ten Congressmen representing Massachusetts out of 435 are swaying any appropriations over our way? The D.C. office works with the NGA to increase their bargaining power and lobby for federal money to come to Massachusetts. Without this office, the Commonwealth would be completely overlooked. If you dont see the importance of the D.C. office, you clearly have no idea how the political process works and are one of those people who love to talk about politics and policy but have no idea what they mean beyond the surface. The D.C. office costs $450,000 but has brought millions to Massachusetts.

However, his PR machine is really poor. It seems like he doesn't understand that the voters need to be better informed of the progress that he's made.

  1. I find it amusing that the word “lazy” continues to appear in these posts in reference to Deval Patrick. Here is someone who was born into poverty and, through hard work, intellect, good fortune and determination, earned his way into our most competitive educational institutions and leadership positions in business and government. Patrick could be earning—quite literally—100 times what he earns now had he chosen to remain in corporate America (not to mention flying on private jets, staying in 5 star hotels, playing golf 10 times a week, etc.). Instead he chose to devote his time and his skills to public service and making Massachusetts a better place. Lazy? Please. We need more people like Patrick in our government.

You can say whatever you want I still think he stinks, he makes Romney look good and I didn’t think anyone could do that ( I did vote for Romney for governor and boy was that a wasted vote). I do have to say that any governor of this state has their work cut out for them, as they do have to deal with the crooks on Beacon Hill.
Hope DiMasi is next one up on the FBI’s list.

  1. Deval Patrick is just realizing how f#$!@# up this state was when he took over, so now he's been correcting and turning it around and cutting spending and penalizing all the departments that are spending money and giving raises in a time that it's not affordable. He's overhauling everything thats wrong with the state before he can get to the real agenda that he planned on doing, too bad he probably will not get the chance to with a second term because people are too ignorant to think logically on how long change takes and how much has to be done.It doesn't happen immediately. Ignorant people should not blog, do your research before you try to speak of a subject you know nothing about.

Posted by RS November 6, 08 11:49 AM
  1. First the state does not set property taxes, that is done at the community level. Which is why you pay your local community for those property taxes. He couldn't promise that, and I don't believe he did. Second, the caddy so many people keep bringing up was one of the vehicles on the short list the state police detail would allow him to have and is likely cheaper than the SUV based model that was also on the list. And finally, you have no idea how many companies are still in MA because of the work he has done to convince them that staying in MA was a good thing, and working to improve infrastructure around them to keep them here. I know over over 15k jobs that may be elsewhere now if Deval hadn't stepped up. Now I am not going to say he is doing great work, but don't underestimate the work he is doing to keep work here, and to grow the MA economy. And housing prices in MA were way over inflated to begin with, your home value is finally coming back to reality. In less than 10 years the value of my home doubled, that was insane. Also this has nothing to do with Deval and everything to do with bad federal politics and decisions.

  1. Here's a scenario--Kerry takes a job in the Obama cabinet-- state legislature repeals the specisl election legisation to go back to gubernatorial appointment for replacement as Senator---Patrick resigns with a deal in place with Mauray and Murray as Governor names Patrick to replace Kerry---game set match---in Mass- you can hold that seat as long as you want---
