US Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the liberal giant from Massachusetts who is battling brain cancer, will likely spend some time sailing in Florida this year during the Congressional recess, a spokesman said today.
His boat, the Mya, is heading to Florida this week, Keith Maley said. A photographer caught a picture of the sloop, loaded aboard a truck, heading along Route 6 in Sagamore this morning.
After undergoing a brain biopsy and being diagnosed in late May, Kennedy walked out of Massachusetts General Hospital days earlier than scheduled, and went sailing on the Mya in a light breeze on Nantucket Sound.
"It was wonderful to be on the water," Kennedy said after disembarking at the time. "It's all it takes." A few days later, he took second in his class in a sailing race.
Kennedy also went straight to sea after returning to his Cape Cod compound from Duke University Medical Center, where he underwent brain surgery in June.
Maley said the senator, who has been staying at his Washington, D.C. home since late October, plans to spend Thanksgiving on the Cape and will likely stay through a Dec. 1 event at Harvard.

police escort?
The senator truly is a lion. God love him. Sail on, Ted, and keep the wind at your back.

I've sailed most of my life (including off Hyannisport), I know how good it is for the soul. Best of luck Ted. Mya is a beautiful boat. Here's to fair winds and smooth sailing for years to come.
Remember when Congress voted on the 700 billion dollar bailout package? 99 senators voted. Guess who didn't? Uncle Ted. If he is ill, he needs to get treatment, but if he is well enough to sail, he is well enough to do his job. Time to resign Ted. Can't say I'll be too sorry to see him go either!
Senator Kennedy is a historical icon who will go down in history with the best of them. Mr. Rudderman, your comments were cruel. If you were ill, would you want to be put out to pasture buddy? I think not, like Senator Kennedy, I think you and the rest of us would fight for our lives as he is. He's fighting and he's working hard for the people -- always has. How many of us would tackle our day to day lives in such an honerable fashion. God Bless Senator Kennedy, and I would like to think that the rest of the world would join in and bless this man for his dedication the people of the USA. Good Sailing Ted, have a great time!
