Malden city worker accused of embezzlement

November 14, 2008 09:26 AM

Middlesex District Attorney Gerald T. Leone discussed the case today.

By John R. Ellement, Globe Staff

An employee in the Malden treasury office has been accused of a property tax scam that allegedly allowed her to embezzle tens of thousands of dollars.

State Police surrounded a car outside a Malden bank and arrested the city employee, Gia Desantis Cox, and a man involved in the scam, according to a press release issued by the Middlesex District Attorney's office. The pair allegedly had $3,500 in cash.

Cox is scheduled to be arraigned today in Malden District Court on charges of larceny over $250 and conspiracy to commit larceny over $250. The man involved in the scam is also expected to be arraigned on similar charges. His name was not released.

“We allege that this defendant abused her position of trust and access in the Malden Treasury to steal money that rightfully belonged to the city’s taxpayers,” Middlesex District Attorney Gerald T. Leone said in a statement. “We are continuing to investigate the scope of this scheme, but we estimate that this has resulted in the theft of tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars.”

According to prosecutors, Cox's work in the treasury included overseeing payments to residents who were owed money back from their property taxes. In 2006, the city began publishing the names of residents who had overpaid their property taxes in an effort to get people to collect their money.

Cox is accused of issuing checks to people whose names were not on the list. Those people would allegedly cash the checks and split the money. State Police arrested Cox on Thursday after she allegedly met one of the false payees to give him one of these checks.

  1. I'm shocked that this could happen in, of all places, the most family friendly city in MA!!

  1. I think the editors should watch what their writers are producing as copy. This sentence (State Police arrested Cox on Thursday after she allegedly met one of the false payees and give him with one of these checks.) is not written correctly. It should be "and gave him one of the checks." I was a journalist major in college and we were always taught to make sure our sentences were short but grammatically correct. Not to go on a bandwagon but I see a lot of this on the internet and the writer in me wants to go and teach each of them a class on sentence structure. Thank you for letting me say my peace.

  1. I'm surprised it wasn't Medford.....chicks aren't too swift there, but I guess the same holds true for Malden.

  1. How can the Globe expect us to rant about this, when we haven't been told if she is a Republican or a Democrat?

  1. To Lucille: Physician, heal thyself. I'm pretty sure that colleges have journalism programs, not majors in "journalist." And how exactly does one "go on a bandwagon"? At least you had an opportunity to say your piece. (Not peace.)

  1. I think some people around here are living in a LALA land. Malden was ranked #1 city to raise a family about 20 or 30 years ago. right now it's full with corrupt government that help themselves first, crimes and dirt.

Here is what some of the people around here need to do, turn off your computers and go take a drive around Malden and you'll see what a disgrace these streets are. no streets cleaned, no sidewalk repairs not signs on the street for flying cars, no police presence anywhere...etc then go and take a drive to Medford or Somerville to see the difference.

Do you think this Cox person is the first or the last one or the only one who is stealing? These are city officials that you’ve helped elect not only they stole your money buy they are also charging you to take your trash out…….what’s next????????????

  1. So, now that the theft has stopped and the coffer will have money in it, can we stop paying to dump our trash? Where else is the money leaking from?

  1. Just wondering ........ What the reason was for Eastern Avenue in Malden to have a sewer line installed twice ( 2 times ) maine road dug up two times in a year............ Could the contractor be close to the Mayor ? someone else in cith hall ? It boggles the mind..........

  1. I was going to write about Lucille Duddy's pathetic pot calling the kettle black but she should be sufficiently humiliated already. What "journalism" school did she go to? Very sad.

  1. Lucille, I think you read the article incorrectly, b/c the sentence you are referring to is grammatically correct. You actually typed it incorrectly. Direct from the article, it reads, "State Police arrested Cox on Thursday after she allegedly met one of the false payees to give him one of these checks." Your wrote, "...met one of the false payees and give him.."

  1. I hear its more of like $500,000.00 right now. What a disgrace although if they look harder Im sure they'll find more within other departments. SInce our local newspaper won't do a story on a former city councillor and cuurent City employee arrested on assault charges (not the first time either) and it wasn't his wife maybe the globe will pick up the story

  1. Her husband is a Malden Cop.

  1. Don't hate!

Its just a city full of Old Irish alcoholic politicians with a last hold on power. They run Malden like its their pub with minimal everything necessary to keep the city crawl pace. Wouldn't we like to know what's being stolen from all the projects that have never kicked off? Oh, ask the cities consulting arm. Hee Hee!

  1. Let me get this straight.. Our taxes go up because there isn't enough new development in malden... ??? Our water bills are converted to monthly, just as they hike up the cost... HOPING that we're all too stupid to notice! We're PAYING for trash bags because they're not making enough $$$$ in taxes.... But this chick is robbing us blind.... AND NOBODY NOTICES!!!!!!! And don't even get me started on how much $$$ this city shells out to citizens to replace tires damaged from the freaking pot holes in this city... Hint... FIX the streets, and don't send 5 men to do a 2 person job... One to fill the whole, one to rake the new tar, and 3 to stand around drinking coffee and observe... AHHHHHHH!

  1. It's ok she is from a very rich Italian family that has alot of power behind them so all she will get is a slap on the wrist and she will be back on the streets. So Malden will loose thier money and we will never fix our city.

PS thier is more to this family than you people think open your eyes.

  1. Her husband is a POLICE OFFICER. There is no way that he didnt know his WIFE had a issue with Oxy's...especially if it was 15 pills a day...I'm curious to know what the real story is, he makes a few busts brings home Mama the good stuff and then shes happy?

Wanna know where your tax dollars are? Why don't you look @ the brand new Cadillac Escalade Mr Nick Cox is driving around with some NON FACTORY rims on it...hmmm...its balogny..their all crooks...

  1. Jesus, Gia. What were you thinking? I held you in a much higher standard then doing something like this. It's a shame what you've done to your families reputation. How are you going to look your son in the face when he gets older? I hope Nick wasn't involved too, although hard to think otherwise. You guys never grew up, huh? It's a tough world we live in and I can only pray you fall like you should.
