NEWTON -- A 19-year-old Newton man was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly waved a knife and threatened to kill and rob commuters at the Newtonville train station this morning.

(Steven R. Grossi, Newton Police Handout)

Steven R. Grossi allegedly struck one man with his knife, but the man was not seriously injured, apparently because Grossi’s 4-inch knife folded during the strike, police said.

“This could have been a lot worse,” said Lt. Bruce Apotheker, a police spokesman. “With everything that occurred down there, the victim was very fortunate.”

Grossi was arraigned at Newton District Court on charges of armed assault to murder, attempt to commit a crime, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct on a public conveyance, and two counts of threatening to commit a crime.

He pleaded not guilty, and was ordered held without bail. He is slated to return on Nov. 25 for a status hearing.

Police officers responding to the station found him on the platform. When he walked away, he looked like he was throwing something to the ground, Apotheker said. It turned out to be the knife. He was arrested without incident.

  1. Crystal Meth has come to Newtron. Get your tasers now, in a few months they'll be illegal to citizens.

  1. Gee umm, what was the incident? Attempted robbery? Rape? I'd like to know seeing my 65 year old mother and fiancee take busses out of Newton every morning. I love how they give you so little information. Perhaps I should just start carrying a large handgun?

  1. I was on the MBTA train (P514) this morning when the incident occured at the Newtonville Station. First the conductor said we where being delayed due to a mechanical problem with the engine. About 15 minutes later he said that there was an incident at the station and that the police wanted to talk with any witnesses. After another 15 minutes this jerk-off was carried away in handcuffs. Looks like a fine upstanding gentlemen, a real contributor to society, huh?
P.S. Never bring a knife to a gun fight.

  1. You are dreaming if you think you are going to get that LTC permit in Newton unless you are the police chief's son or something.

  1. FYI: Massachusetts already has a ban on tasers.

Never bring a knife to a gun fight.

Protect yourself by being more able to defend yourself than an attacker would be to make you a victim.

  1. shut up its not crystal meth 100% guarenteed and its not a real neck tattoo either. Probably xanax gennerally people take a bunch, dont remember what they did and wake up charged with mayhem. they havent released the full details so everything written here by everyone is a big guessing game (except the fact that it WAS NOT crystal meth,)

  1. Steven Grossi, 17, of 10 Prospect St., Newton, was arrested on charged of malicious destruction of property May 11 at 6 p.m. Police responded to Washington Street on a report of a vehicle alarm. Grossi was reportedly found with fresh blood on his left hand and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath.

Maybe we can get his folks (and him) to move to Chelsea....

  1. WBZ is reporting,,,,

"WBZ's Jim Smith spoke with Jean Ford, who said she is Steven's grandmother. She said her grandson is very distraught and has been upset about not being able to find a job."

Gee, do you think having a tatoo on your neck, showing all the world you're a thug- might have something to do with not being able to find a job?

  1. maybe the MA liberal judges will put him in jail for 1 day - then let him out for good bahavior?

  1. You will not get an unrestricted license to carry in Newton. The police would rather you die than defend yourself.

  1. I can't, for the life of me, understand why he hasn't applied for a firefighter position with the B.F.D.......maybe they will contact HIM as a result of his new found publicity.

  1. Everybody in this blog should walk in the shoes on the guilty before bashing him. I knew the accused as a learning disabled teen who never had a chance from the get go. No parents, just his grandparents watching him, who did the best they could.
Drugs are the comfort. Tattos are the insurance.
All the ignorant people on this blog should check their own characters at the door and leave the mentally hurt alone. Steve, keep your head up.

  1. AA - not having parents and having a learning disability does not give you the right to rob and stab people on their way to work on a thursday morning. Stop enabling. His "learning disability" is the binky that has likely kept him away from severe punishment his whole life. Walk in the shoes of the real victim, not the culprit. The real innocent man was sent to the hospital with a stab wound caused by someone you want to claim is a victim of society because he was raised by his grandparents. Get a clue man. People like you give this guy an excuse for everything he does in life, no matter how extreme.

OK, AA... You plead guilty to indulging in the first part, now show us a photo of the tattoo... :)

Sorry, but in that situation, I do not have the time nor inclination to "understand" that creep.

  1. Sorry but when he started swinging the knife he lost my sympathy vote. LD or not. I do feel sorry for his grandparents though.

  1. If you're mentally ill, you deserve compassion and treatment. But if you're not getting help, you're still responsible for your actions if they threaten or harm others. Wielding a knife in the middle of a train station is a punishable act, no matter what.

  1. Actually people like you making excuses for people who take their woes out on the rest of society and then cry "poor me! I'm on drugs and don't know how to spell!" are MUCH bigger problem than those of us "judging" someone who tried to knife someone on his way to work. You should be thankful he didn't end up with a couple of hollowpoints in his chest. I'm willing to bet his inability to get a job had much to do with a false sense of entitlement where people like him could never do somethign as menial as push a broom or wash dishes while trying to get his feet underneath him. Legitimate mental illnes is one thing, fools who use it as an excuse to justify unacceptable behavior is another all together. You can afford three color ink but can't hold a job? Really? Must be mental illness! Too bad your theory is flawed by the fact that he had enough understanding of right and wrong to try and ditch the knife and avoid the police. I have a couple of members of my family who are mentally ill, and know enough about it to understand the difference between someone who is sick and someone using his misfortunes as a crutch. Either it's his fault for being a scumbag or it's his friends and family's fault for not getting him help before it led up to this. I'd bet a week's paycheck it's the former.

  1. 123, he wouldn't survive pulling this in chelsea. some people are just a lot better at becoming victims. teach your kids how to use their head and their hands. sometimes the world isn't as simple as 123.

  1. Yeah I feel so bad for him...we don't know him so lets not judge a person who runs up to a T stop with a knife threatening to kill hard working people...Congrats you know him personally...you must be a psycho loser too!

Posted by HappyDOg November 6, 08 11:12 PM
  1. 123456 - Keep your insulting comments about Chelsea to yourself. Just because a town is poor does not mean there is a lot of crime or that it is a dumping ground for your trash.

  1. Don't know how the incident arose. It seems more newsworthy because it happened in Newton. It looks to me like mental illness, not mere criminality where there is a financial motive or revenge or something. It just looks like he lost it. I would speculate that he is going to be sent to Bridgewater for evaluation, or wherever they send such a person. He probably was close to suicide or was paranoid.

Nobody died here. Therefore, perhaps some help can come from this traumatizing incident (for the victim, as well as for the perp). At least in this case, the fellow is in custody.

The tattoo on his neck indicates a phoenix rising from the flames. I don't know the significance, but I would guess that it has to do with his personal struggles.

If we are lucky, everyone will come out of this stronger than before. Let's try a little charitable thinking for a change. There is hope, you know, where there is life.

Get ready for the returning Iraq vets with their own demons. We all need to appreciate the effects of PTSD.

  1. I think it is tragic and I do feel sorry for him. He is disturbed. But he is responsible for his actions and must pay the consequences. He has big problems but this does not give him the right to attack people with a knife. I was miserable when I was 17 but I did not attack people with knives!! I hope he can get some psychological help along with his punishment because it would be good if he could grow up, get mentally healthy, and become an upright citizen, and not be a danger to others and a drain on our society. It's kind of scary that this could occur in Newton. I live in Boston; we are not safe anywhere!

  1. I can't believe some of these comments I'm reading. Some of you are just as bad as this attacker. Arm yourself with guns? Come on, people, enough with the paranoia. You're just providing more fuel for those unstable people out there who wish they COULD get a gun.

Try thinking about what you're saying before posting comments, it might do you (and others) some good.

  1. I like how this got more attention then when a crazy kid threw a molotov cocktail at the cops in newton a few years ago. I know the victim and the culprit and Steve was obviousally not in his right mind. Boston888, how do you know he wasn't getting treatment , and how do you know he didnt just wake up and have a nervous breakdown. the victim even said that he did not seem sane at the time. If he was a rich kid from newton he'd get off, but not everyone from newton is rich even though it seems that way. hopefully he can get help and the best thing is that nobody was seriously hurt. the victim is one of the nicest people you could ever meet, a real stand up guy, and i know he'll forgive steve before most of you people do, and he's the one who was stabbed. the way you people are complaining youd think he tried to stab you with a broken knife

  1. Steven never had a chance. I knew him as a baby and youngster. His dad is a convicted murderer for murder of Roger McElroy in Newton; his mom has been drugged out for 20+ yrs; the grandparents were never much better.
I hope Steven can get help, get sober and get an education maybe and turn his life around.

  1. you make the comment that newton doesnt seem so safe anymore because of steve, but a freak occurence doesnt make it suddenly a crimezone. there have been many occurences in newton that could make you think that but they dont publicize all of their incidents. people dont get murdered often, but people get robbed, people get beat up, ive had a gun pulled on me in newton , crazy people throw molotov cocktails at the police, i know victims and culprits but its stil not a high crime area. This shows you that not all of newton is rich happy go lucky people there are all different types of people in all towns and everyone deserves forgiveness. And stop worrying about the neck tattoo, its TEMPORARY. He has plenty of tattoos as do I but dont form false opinions about people because they have them. Not every bad person looks like a biker and not all people who look different than society's comfortable perception of a clean person are bad. Get well Grossi

  1. Alot of you people on here are so ignorant. Yea what he did was wrong and you need to take responsiblity for your actions, but Judging a person on how they look is aweful. Maybe none of you tried to stab someone or rob them but no one on here is a saint. Stop thinking that your better then other people everyone makes mistakes. If you knew him you wouldnt be saying this about him. this is an isolated incident so stop assuming you know what your talking about. If you beleive everything the news tells you you are very nieve and i feel sorry for you. most you that made harsh statements even said that they didnt give you all the details so where to come off making up your own.

  1. Wow this has just come to my attention. I am sorry that this child had to turn out this way. My brother in-law was murdered by this young mans father and it doesn't appear that this young person was able to rise above his father's example. My family will never forget what this young mans father took from our family but we never hoped that this cycle would continue.
