The scene of the crime was deserted except for one police officer late this afternoon.

FRAMINGHAM -- A 15-year-old student has been charged with stabbing another student during a bloody brawl at dismissal today outside Framingham High School, police said late this afternoon.

The suspect, whose name was not released by authorities, is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with intent to kill, disorderly conduct, and disturbing a school assembly, said Lieutenant Paul Shastany, a Framingham police spokesman.

The victim, who is believed to be 16 years old, was stabbed just above the buttocks, in the lower back. He was taken by MedFlight to Boston Medical Center, Shastany said.

"The wound was sufficient enough that the paramedics felt it would be necessary to fly him,'' Shastany said. "I'm not saying it was life-threatening or not.''

Detectives at the high school believe the victim was among four students who were involved in a fight in front of the school shortly after dismissal around 2:15 p.m., Shastany said. During the fight, another person who was not involved in the altercation walked up and stabbed the student, he said.

The 15-year-old was charged shortly after 4:30 p.m. His 16-year-old brother is also charged with disorderly conduct and disturbing a school assembly in relation to the fight.

Several students saw the fight erupt outside the main entrance of the school, according to senior Yvon Louis, 17.

"They started fighting at the steps and rolled down the steps," Louis said. "When they got up, they started fighting again.”

Then a student pulled a knife and plunged it into one of the students involved in the brawl. The student with the knife ran off. The victim got up off the ground and walked in through the front entrance of the school and began asking people for help.

"There was blood everywhere," said sophomore James Au, 16. "He had blood coming from his mouth, too."

Other students began crying and hugging one another, said junior Cheryl Bergman.

"There was a girl having a panic attack, screaming, 'I don't feel safe in this school anymore,' " Bergman said. "One thing I kept hearing was, 'I can’t believe this could happen here.' "

Sophomore Becky Cole, 16, said she sits behind the victim in Spanish class.

“He was telling me he was going to fight some kid after school," Cole said. "They fought already during school in the morning.”

Fisticuffs are not uncommon in the school, which has an enrollment of 2,100, students said, but the fights never escalate to this degree. In neighboring Sudbury, 15-year-old James Alenson was fatally stabbed in the high school bathroom in January 2007. Prosecutors have charged John Odgren, another student at Lincoln-Sudbury High School, with first-degree murder.

  1. That girl doesn't feel safe? Maybe she'd feel safer at Lincoln Sudbury.
She has nothing to worry about. She's not going to get stabbed, for God's sake.

  1. This is a classic example of what happens when a town is financially strapped and two high schools become one. I was a student at the old Framingham North HS, just before the merger, and yeah sure , a fight might breakout here or there but you never thought a stabbing would ensue. At that time Framingham North HS was a very reputable public high school...since the merger everything from academics to morale to safety has plummeted. The merger of the North & South high schools was poorly planned and its always the students that suffer from poor decisions/planning. The town needs to get its act together and should give serious thought to becoming a city. Instead of putting precious dollars towards academics now they'll have to do what inner city schools do and spend money on security and metal detectors. It's no wonder many parents of the next generation of students are already thinking of ways to avoid the Framingham public schools system. But, hey, at least there's plenty of shopping to do...right?!

  1. How come the name of the victim wasn't released, yet a girl was interviewed that sat behind him in Spanish class? This is terrible reporting.

Oh come on. . .I recognize that girl. . .she's the one who cries when she gets a B instead of an A and who thinks it's "unacceptable" if her school bus is running late in the morning. And seriously. . .you can't believe it could happen here? Take a look around Framingham resident. . .it's not exactly the nicest town anymore. I hate to be the guy who bashes on immigrants like the Rizzo brothers do in Framingham, but seriously, look around. . .

They didn'yt think a thing like that could happen in Columbine High School in Littleton, CO either. . .

  1. I am totally offended that people feel the need to criticize a young girl who was upset at what happened in her school. I don't blame her for not feeling safe. Instead of criticizing the young people and Framingham public schools, I would love to see people working together to help reduce bullying, violence, and crimes in schools.

The girl you were talking about didn't say that herself. She was quoting what others were saying. Get it right.

  1. If you go the Framingham High School you can find out the victims name from a friend, everyone knows who it was. If not it is not your business anyway. I believe his name is not being released because he is a minor. I hope he is alright I do not know him well but I went to middle school with his brother and he is a good kid.

  1. Chris - FHS is ranked #13 in the state for all public high schools. This is far better than when you went there. This has nothing to do with being "cash-strapped." It has to do with kids changing and parents not parenting correctly. It has to do with thug culture being viewed as a good thing.

  1. Someone tell me how their highschool student gets out of your home with a knife to go to school? We are not talking about going hunting...SCHOOL! What do parents think there kid is learning? We should start to charge the parents with a crime...aiding and abetting, contributing to the deliquency of a minor. Parents protect their kids....it won't be long til we hear how the boy that had the knife is a "good boy" and how this was a "shock." He goes to school with a knife...hell...he has access to a knife. What is wrong with his parents? Look, kids get into fights, but when it involves a weapon, that crosses a line. Put the parents in jail along with their kid...that will make parents get more involved with their kids. That is what we are missing....Moms and Dads keep leaving our kids alone to fend for themselves...see what they grow up to be. Parents have a responsibility to the child and the rest of society to raise their children in a manner that is civily acceptable. There is no excuss for this kid to have a knife. Send him to jail and don't spend state money to eductate this kid!

  1. lets face it the kids from the south side are just not educated prior to arriving at school on what is right and wrong.

I want to North High School and now I know we were actually a step up from that South High.

  1. Framingham High School is a good school. No it's a great school and yes it's big, but it runs like a well oiled machine. So they merged North and South? The classes are many, the classroom sizes, for the most part are kept small and there are lots of support people in place. What's really being said here is that there is diversity,. Well, if you don't want that, pack your bags and move to Wayland, Weston, Wellesley, Sudbury and Southborough. The point I'm making here is this is the real world and if you want a Vanilla environment for you and your kids, you need to move to one of those towns where there are lots of WHITE, RICH people. But, don't kid yourselves. Those kids are also pretty screwed up, maybe a different kind of screwed up with different kinds of family stresses, pressure to be the best, keeping up with the Jones, parents who expect nothing less than a Harvard sticker on the rear window of their SUV's.
My daughter is getting a great education from Framingham High. Her friends are nice kids, maybe a little more street savvy than a Newton Kid or a Wellesley Kid, but she tries hard, she's being academically challenged and she feels safe there. She loves it there and that's what matters the most to me.

  1. My daughter, who goes to Framingham, and witnessed the aftermath of the stabbing, said that fighting is very UNCOMMON at Framingham high. On a rare occasion when an argument turns to shoving and in a rarer occasion when it escalates to fisticuffs, the staff swoops down immediately and puts and end to the nonsense. She also said that when you have THREE MINUTES to get from one class to the next, and the school itself, is physically HUGE, there is NO TIME to stop and talk, let alone get into an argument. It's a very regimented schedule, a half hour for lunch and those students are moving.

  1. This is the damn 3rd time lockdown this Month. First the parent who calls and says his kid went to school with a knife. Then the wife who said her husband has a gun and is the neighborhood and now this. Mike Welch HEAL THYSELF! Will we parents hear a letter from him? Only when he feels like it we wil get some stupid feeble email attachment of his that doesnt work like all the others he sends us.
Like the kid who had TB or something like that=we heard nothing in the form of a letter until he left the hosptial. Framingham has a weak leader in Mike Welch and a stupidintendent that is double dipping making over 300K a year. I cant wait till my kids get the hello ut of the Soviet Republic of Framingham High Schoo. New buyers? Move on. You do not want your kids in school here. Adss the girl said IT IS NOT SAFEE!

  1. "I was a student at the old Framingham North HS, just before the merger, and yeah sure , a fight might breakout here or there but you never thought a stabbing would ensue"

Okay yeah so just because you THINK that it wouldn't happen does not mean that in reality it wouldn't have. I didn't think something would ever happen like this at FHS but clearly it did.
And people can't make the assumption that all of Framingham is bad, sure some parts might not be the best, but that's the case in pretty much every town. Also, If a girl doesn't feel safe there any more she has every right to feel that way. Don't sterotype her as the one who "cries when she gets a B".

However, the most important thing here by far is the victim and his family. I pray that he is alright and everything will be okay for him. Hopefully this horrific event can be used to help the FHS students grow together and stop any fighting. No one's life, especially at high school, should be put in danger like that. The victim and his family are in my thoughts and I truly hope that they will be okay.

  1. Charge the parents??? I know the boy who did this personally and he was acting in self defense!!! if you don't know the whole story I'll let you know right now: There is a serious problem in Framingham high with violence and students like the so called victim bullying and claiming thier from gangs to intimadate thier peers. The victim in question jumped the attacker with another student and in retrun the "atacker" defended himself with the so called victim's weapon. And shogan you have no idea how involved his parents are but no parent can protect thier kids from bullyies so do me a favor and get your facts straight before you judge!!!!!

  1. Here's what we know for a fact: there was a fight and someone stabbed another person with a knife. That in itself is sad, frightening and disappoining, and those emotions are real and should be dealt with. On the other hand, this person or these 2-4 people who were involved do not represent all that Framingham is or what it stands for. The Framingham school district is one of the best in the State, providing a well-rounded education to all students from pre-school through high school. Framingham High School itself has been cited as 13th in the country by Newsweek Magazine. The best thing to do in situations like this is to stay calm, support those who need it, wait for the facts, and try not to jump to conclusions while casting blame on society, parents, youth, etc. If there's anyone worthy of judgement at this point it's the individuals who were involved, not the school or the district.

  1. To Framingham Parent and Lucky Marbles:
In all honesty, what type of person or parent feels the need to ridicule a young girl who recently witnessed a traumatizing event at her school? AT HER SCHOOL. High school is hard for everyone. Did you not go to school? Why don't you ask all the kids that are picked on everyday how safe they feel after something like this happens. Maybe you were the one doing the bullying. Kids are supposed to feel safe at school. And how do you expect them to react when they see someone get stabbed? Do you think that they'll be ok about it? How are you ok about it? You live in Framingham, don’t you?
I recognize people like you every day: you’re the pathetic people that feel the need to complain and criticize anything that you can get your hands on. No one thinks anything will happen anywhere, especially kids, but it happens. Cut her some slack, grow up, and maybe try to help stop these things from happening. The reason society is becoming more and more violent is because of people like you. Quit your groaning and do something about it.

If you have to stoop so low as to insult a young girl for the way she reacted to a stabbing, both of you are no better than the parents who let their kid have access to the knife first place.

  1. Framingham High School is a very good school with great students. 5 students were involved in the fight, thats .25% of students at the school. Don't judge the whole school on the .25% who feel that it is acceptable to fight. Maybe more kids will grow up from this.

  1. Pull a knife in fight – go to jail – no question. The law is all you can have when someone tries to take a life. But short of that, who is watching these kids? Financially strapped or not, there is often no sense or good reason for a teenager to do something impulsive or stupid. That is the nature of adolescence. No comments yet have revealed the motive of the attack. It is probably something regrettably stupid. I grew up in Newton over forty years ago and I saw plenty of violence. My brother was kicked into a coma by a usually quiet boy for a simple wise crack he made about a girl. Who knows why kids snap? It happens; we need to get beyond the cause, the real question is how to and help put out the fire. The best thing you can teach your kid is to watch out for the signs of violence and to avoid getting caught up and of course, steamed up. Kids need to help each other passed the boiling points to calm down not get riled up. Is it that hard to see? And no one can be sure whether his kid has knife or not in his bag. The only way you would have a chance to know what your kids do is if you keep them close to you. You have to stay close to your kids - it's that simple. What’s not simple is how to do it.

  1. Uh..Shogan??

"send him to jail and don't spend state money to educate this kid!"???

    Are you serious?
It would cost the state more to incarcerate this kid than it would to educate him.
Is this really your solution to this kind of problem? If so, you've got a real narrow mind buddy. Oh, and by the way... "excuss"??? REALLY? LOL

    Get a grip.

Posted by RC November 20, 08 09:11 PM
  1. Shogan you say "Send him to jail and don't spend state money to eductate this kid!" How do you think prisons are funded? You ask "Someone tell me how their highschool student gets out of your home with a knife to go to school?" They sneak it. It is impossible for a parent to control every aspect of a child's life. The best they can do is try to parent their kid in whatever way they know. Putting a parent in jail with their kid will not make a kid not bring a knife to school.

Chris you say "...since the merger everything from academics to morale to safety has plummeted." How exactly are the students of Framingham High affected by a merger that happened before these students were even born.

  1. Chris, Framingham High School's academics are very good and it a generally nice place to be. I am proud to say I graduated from Framingham High. I got a great education and got into a very good college. It's a good thing that the school is spending more on academics than metal detectors. It would send kids a really bad message if their school was so scared of violence, the academic quality was harmed

  1. We moved to Framingham from Arlington when my son transferred to a private school in the area seven years ago. He's now graduated from NYU and lives in the East Village in the city. We moved to Belknap Road which I considered a nice neighborhood however, the first year we lived here, a car was driven up on our lawn by a drunk teenager who lived down the street. As my son didn't go to Framingham High, I just considered it, and still do, "bad parenting", as neither the boy nor the parents came forward to even apologize...an act which turned me against the town. This could happen anywhere, however, parents are responsible for raising their children to be responsible adults and I didn't see that in this situation...

Posted by Jo Berman November 20, 08 10:13 PM
  1. honestly framingham high school is not as bad as people think it is. yes there are some violent occurrences that take place but in order to be part of them you have to get yourself into them. nobody is just going to come and stab you for no reason. people should not be worried about their safety or their kids safety. as a junior at fhs i have never been involved in something like this before and thats simply because i picked the right group of friends. however, i do think we should get metal detectors in our school because we do have a good number of kids in our school and many different ethnicity's which sometimes can ignite things like this.but kids should have nothing to worry about if they hang out with the right people.

Posted by Framingham High Student November 20, 08 11:10 PM
  1. Shogun anyone with a kitchen has "access to a knife" so it's really not that hard to get your hand on a weapon.

I'm personally upset as to how the media (channel 7) covered this story by distorting the facts and making it one sided. One person got stabbed but it started with the victim attacking another student (was it self defense? did the victim carry a weapon also?) with all the violence happening in schools these days someone is bound to carry a weapon to defend themselves. I am not justifying the teenager who stabbed the victim in the booty, but there are always two sides to the story.
I also LOVED how channel 7 followed the family of the suspect out the back of the police station to bring families at home the image of a family gathering themselves and dealing with this matter, which brings me to the point .... why is this getting stabbed in the butt headline news? when there are many relevant issues going on in the world at the moment.

  1. One thing I see from reading these comments... FHS students will never win a spelling bee! And the parents are no better.

As far as what happened at the school, send the boy to jail is the decision? Give me a break people. Oh, I'm sorry, thats right - we punish the parents. If the victim was hit on the side of his head and died from that blow, are you going to send the parents to jail for giving birth to a child with 2 fists?

When I was in high school, there were occassional fights in the school yard. What is the difference between a fist, a baseball bat, brass knuckles or a knife? They all can kill, right? Let me add, that I grew up Newton and went to Newton Public Schools. No school is immune from the situation that happened at FHS.

Posted by soccermom November 21, 08 06:13 AM
  1. This has nothing to do with the merger of the two high schools. I graduated from FHS two years ago, not 20, like some of the people that are commenting here. Therefore, I feel as though I have a better insight as to what the school i like nowadays. FHS is a great school, and people shouldn't be criticized for something that a few kids got involved in. I had a wonderful experience and high school at Framingham and the faculty are great also. With 2,100 kids at the school you have to expect things to go wrong sometimes, but this is NOT common.

it was a couple of stupid kids making a very bad choice while being associated in a fight, its ridiculous to have people call Framingham ghetto or bad, Framingham high is just the opposite
Framingham is great a school and there’s no need to put those words on all the other good students that attend Framingham high .

Posted by unknown November 21, 08 06:09 PM
  1. Everyone needs to stop ridiculing eachother and stop scapegoating Framingham. This story is not about the educational system at FHS and especially not about the capabilities of Mike Welch. FHS is a great school, with a diverse population and great test scores. Incidents like this can occur in ANY town. Fights also are not an uncommon thing in high schools. Parents, think about when you went to school and then try to tell me that you didn't see any fights. Everybody needs to stop calling Framingham a bad place to live and stop putting the blame on people like the parents.

This entire discussion board should be focused around the victim instead of comments that are aimed at rebuttling what the previous person has to say. We should be thankful that the victim is okay and that the situation didn't escalate into something fatal.

"I hate to be the guy who bashes on immigrants like the Rizzo brothers do in Framingham, but seriously, look around. . ."

This statement makes me laugh. Do you really think it's immigrants who make this town unsafe? No. Take a look at L-S: white suburbia, yet, would you look at that? A stabbing! Same with Columbine, but even worse! So before you run your mouth insulting the hard-working people of a town I am proud to be from, and the school I graduated from take a look at yourself and what you're doing to promote the intolerance and hatred that is the REAL source of the problem. Grow up, open your eyes, and stop spewing your ignorance.
