Turner raises questions about Wilburn interview

By John C. Drake, Globe Staff

Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner said today that the federal bribery case against him had been undermined this week by statements from the federal government’s cooperating witness.

In his second public rally in three days following his Friday arrest, Turner seized on an interview Roxbury businessman Ron Wilburn gave to the Globe this week.

Wilburn said in the story yesterday that the FBI had come to him – not the other way around – and said that all of the federal government’s affidavit was true except for suggestions that Wilburn knew of previous offers of bribes to State Senator Dianne Wilkerson from businessmen.

Turner attacked the media for not probing the alleged inconsistencies further.

“Is it not hard news that Ron Wilburn who was wearing his wire is tearing his case apart?” Turner said to about 75 supporters gathered outside his Roxbury district office this morning.

He also pointed to this statement by Wilburn: “If other people aren’t looked at realistically, something is radically wrong with the process.”

Said Turner: “Since he was wearing the FBI wire, isn’t he saying that he can’t understand why the other people he entrapped have not been arrested? Think about what he is telling you.”

Turner called the rally to highlight the fact that he remains the only city councilor to maintain a district office outside City Hall. He also blasted the media for not covering his community work more extensively before his arrest.

  1. This guy I cant believe was elected. Why dont you shave and stop taking money. However we all know that turner and wilkerson are not the only ones taking money. As the saying goes politics is a dirty game. I mean look at Deval stopping details. Lets see isn't his buddy an owner of a flagger company. Doesn't sound fair to me. I am not against flaggers I just find it funny that his buddy owns a company and he pushes for cop details to stop.

  1. Of course, being caught with your hand in the cookie jar does not mean that you can be convicted unless ALL the people guilty of the same offence have been also convicted... Try applying that logic to any other crime and see how it works for you. "You cannot arrest me for robbing the bank, officer... you have an unresolved bank robbery from last week :)".

I know you're sorry for being caught... now take a hint from Diane and go quietly into the sunset. All that hissing and moaning did not work for her either... save a shred of dignity and admit you're guilty.

  1. So what exactly was that Mr Wilburn was handing you in a taped video survellience? Puh-lease... Not a witch hunt here Mr Turner. Its called justice!

  1. You TOOK the money. A photo shows you taking the money. And you admit that you took the money, and then tried to claim it was a campaign contribution.
Please, shut up and get out of town.

  1. Imagine that... a liberal failing to accept the blame of their actions and instead trying to divert from the facts and blame it on someone else.

    Barney Frank?
    Dianne Wilkerson?

But no, it's the republicans that are the problem... right, that makes sense.

  1. time to turn our attention to someone else's guilt or innocence... like uhhh DiMasi.
    Turner is last week's news.

  1. Will this guy please just shut up, do his job and prove his case when the time is right. He got them to hold off on getting fired, now plead your case to the jury. Innocent people do not need an almost daily forum to speak out.

  1. Oh Chuck, give it a rest guy. The more you open that dumb mouth of yours the stupider you look. Go crawl under a rock somewhere and wait for a bunch of your cronies to go down and that may take the heat off you. Just go away!

  1. I suppose, in Turner's mind, that if the media had reported his work in the community more extensively, his alleged trangressions would have been forgiven? Chuck, wake up and smell the coffee!!!!!!!! You took a bribe!!! You were caught red handed...on tape. Accept the responsibilty like a man....not like a crybaby pointing you finger at everyon else as you are portraying your self.
    GROW A PAIR!!!!!!!!

  1. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT CHUCK TURNER IS ONLY LOOKING OUT FOR HIMSELF,AND NOT THE PEOPLE HE SERVES.HE'S A LIAR,AND A THIEF.THE PEOPLE OF HIS DISTRICT SHOULD DEMAND HIS RESIGNATION.IF A MAN WOULD LIE ABOUT PICTURES HE SAID WERE US FORCES RAPING WOMEN IN IRAQ,PUTTING THEM IN HARMS WAY,WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT HIM.HE'S A TRAITOR,AND A LIAR.

  1. seriously. who does this moron think he is? he is a whacko that needs to go. time to get a real job Chuckie. and who are these people that go to rallies in the middle of a work day? don't they have anything better to do w/ their time?

    nice beard too. jerk...

  1. Chuck, haven't you heard the saying "one picture is worth a thousand word" or in your case a thousand bucks. What does it say about your character if you were able to be "entrapped" If you were of such high moral character it would not be possible to become ensnared by anyone. You are just another thief stealing from the public. You whine and cry because you got caught.

  1. It will be funny once he is convicted and he finally has his big trap shut

Posted by dano November 26, 08 01:17 PM
  1. Again, he's not denying he took a bribe, he's just deflecting the charges and calling the whole scenario racist. The man does not shut up.

Posted by murph November 26, 08 01:18 PM
  1. Amazing, you get caught red handed and you're still trying to throw off the blame. Absolutely amazing.

    Posted by Thomas1126 November 26, 08 01:19 PM
  1. Emerging from his arraignment, Turner said "No Comment!" ... "We're not going to let this be tried in the media." Notwithstanding, that's ALL he's done ever since! I fail to see how his incessant stream of self-absorbed ranting & threats is doing anything to establish his innocence! How "dirty" is he, when he can blithely claim that he doesn't remember ever meeting face-to-face (captured on film) with a guy who allegedly gave him a $1,000 cash bribe (aka, campaign donation)?

My impression of his career, is that his constituents' interests are served ONLY when that happens to feed his own ego & ambitions. How sad, that his supporters have been conditioned to expect so little from an elected official...

Posted by deltaman November 26, 08 01:27 PM
  1. he is going to keep having these types of otubursts of innocence to sow confusion and uncertainty into the minds of people watching this whole episode of "days of our lives".... and in the end...he will have distracted us long enough to make us fed up with this whole saga that we will just want to forget all this and move on....(long-winded explanation)

Posted by Marcopolo November 26, 08 01:31 PM
  1. If anyone can ever make sense out of Turner, please publish the Cliff notes - He always talks in such circles - that it impossible to even understand what point he is making - if he is even making a point!
I feel sad that the district is being betrayed by our own - but I am not going to support someone who was caught red handed just because he is one our own.
Crime is crime. Fraud is fraud.
We need a clear thinking articulate and HONEST advocate - Chuck - your rambliongs and now your crimes make us look bad. I'm embarrassed.

Posted by Turner has also betrayed us. November 26, 08 01:34 PM
  1. Turner has doubts, he has questions about the witness. What does he think
it was someone else he took the money from? What a jerk, he's not only a crook, he's one of those really stupid crooks you see on the dumbest crooks shows on t.v..

  1. Does anyone doubt that at some point he will be demanding a change of venue because of his claim that he can't get a fair trial because of all the "unfair pretrial publicity." What a joke. I think that he's nuts!!!

does resemble a lawn gnome with that hat and stupid beard does he not.

  1. Chuck Turner lost all credibility when he created a presentation showcasing U.S. Troop abuses of Iraqi women in 2004. Turns out that Turner faked the photos. It never happened. His story was a lie to hurt our troops during wartime. In most countries.. that is treason. In Massachusetts, it is a resume enhancement.

This man is that shameless. He is an embarrassment to any thinking person.

Time to stop making excuses for losers like this.

I think we need to send Chuch Turner to Iraq... and let him fend for himself.

How can anyone respect a man who has I think it is time for Chuck Turner to create a new another presentation. Only instead of slandering our men and women in uniform, he can slander the FBI.

  1. What does party affiliation have to do with it? Democrat or Republican, it does not matter. A crook is a crook. Of course those who do bring up such comparisons are true whinebags which for some reason usually happens to be a Republican. Just an observation.

Posted by ChillyWong November 26, 08 03:22 PM
  1. ChillyWong... but in Massachusetts... the Democrat crooks seem to stay in office or get promoted (Chuck and Diane). The Republican crooks are sent packing (aren't many left).

How did Chuck Turner keep his seat after he slandered our men and women in uniform?

  1. Back in August of 1992, Chuck arrived at the Jamaica Plain where he completed a head count of construction workers. There was 1 white guy and 6 black guys. What did Chuck do? He played the race card by stating that the owner is to do what he can do to get more blacks involved. Before that in 1986, when efforts were made "... to hire 50 percent city residents, 25 percent minorities and 10 percent females...." Chucky chastised
Mayor Flynn for slow implementation. Now, 2008-1986= 22 years . The conservative estimate is as follows : for twenty-two years he has played the race card.Current situation has nothing to do with race.....Chucky should know.

  1. james michael curley was re-elected mayor of boston from a jail cell. He was 'corrupt' too, but the people loved him. Chuck is obviously a good councilor for his constituents. Times have changed, and we don't have much patience for 'lovable rogues' anymore -- or un-lovable ones either. I don't believe he's guilty just because the FBI says he is, but if he is guilty of taking a bribe (a) he's stupid, and (b) he will be punished by the courts and lose his seat. But if it turns out this is some kind of set-up, which isn't impossible these days, a lot of people in Boston will have egg on their face and how many of you will apologize for presuming he was guilty? Not many I'll bet.

  1. Thank you for your service to your neighborhood , your city and to our people as a "whole" meaning the "poor", but NO thankyou for the excuses, the extortioning and the SHAME which you have brought upon our city for the entire country to see. If you are going to fight for your integrity as you once previously stated, then, wash yourself clear. Tell the truth.

  1. You all are hilarious. I suppose each of you has earned your law degrees from one of Boston's prestigious legal studies institutions. Or have you all just graduated from Internet & Media College? Most of you have never spent more than 10 minutes, if that, with this man, yet you know his level of intelligence, his character, his principles and his predispositions. It boggles my mind how many of you get on your blog soap box, full of emotion, and spout your hateful rhetoric through one side of your mouth while you decry his public pleas of innocence out the other.

The man is defending himself from those of you who have already tried and hung him. Get your facts straight before you get all high and mighty on the internet as if you're somebody special because you can type (or at least try to) some mildly humorous rantings anonymously.

GiveChuckWhatHeDeserves, you're funny. You realize 22 years ago, the city WASN'T doing enough to make sure that people of color and women had every bit a chance at reaping the financial advantages of municipal contracts... that's not playing the "race card"... that's called Reality brother!

You bitter people, who refuse to put yourself in other people's shoes and understand why race is still significant in their lives, are an interesting bunch. No, I wouldn't call you racist, but many of you are certainly classless, obtuse, and hypocritical. You don't realize that you play your own "race card" every time you minimize potentially real racial issues because you're too dense or afraid of facing the racial barriers that still exist in this city.

Lastly, for the uninformed, entrapment is not simply an "excuse" for why you committed a crime, as some of you seem to think. It's a legitimate defense when a government official or agent, using dissuasion or fraud, INDUCES someone into committing a crime although they ordinarily wouldn't commit the crime. A simple and clear example is a government official giving you a bag of flour when in reality it is a bag of cocaine then busting you for cocaine possession. Or an official or agent, coaxing you into selling drugs just so they can arrest you when you ordinarily wouldn't sell any drugs.

Innocent before proven guilty. Beyond a reasonable doubt. Key phrases in the American legal system. You all should learn them.

  1. To all those who have taken the time to comment before me,

If I have learned one thing in this life, it is to not comment or judge people who I know virtually nothing about, when I have not given them the respect of getting to know them and their whole story directly. To do this is not only unfair but reacting from a place of ignorance and hate. To try to belittle another human being so hatefully, is belittling your humanity. That is all I see in these comments. Seriously, would you like yourself or your father to be treated like this? You are acting like an angry mob, and it's disturbing to read. Until this year, when Barack Obama ran for office, I was aware of but have never seen so much blatant, open hate in this country, and so many desparate attempts at character assassination that some couldn't wait to add fuel to and benefit in some way from. Unlike you all, I DO know the whole of Chuck Turner, and his story. I know his character, his long history, his generosity, his humility, and his strength in outing injustice wherever it hurts others like yourselves. He would be the first person to help you all if you had a problem or were being treated unfairly, especially if you were being "convicted" publically without one day in court to tell YOUR TRUTH. You are trying to crucify a man that if you had one conversation with, would see that he is the oppposite of the person that the media has ignorantly and hatefully joined the FBI in trying to destroy. Besides all of the hundreds if not thousands of good people that Councilor Turner has helped without even asking for a thank you, did you know that he donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to this city through paying for a district office out of his own money? Very few people know about this, because he doesn't do anything for money or thanks. He does everything out of love for his people and city. Do you also know that rather than do extensive campaign fundraising, he pays for most of his campaign himself as he would rather spend his time and energy working 7 days a week, often from 6:00am-10pm as a 68 yeard old elder who could easily be retired by now? Everything that the Councilor is and does is directly opposite what you are all buying into. I can say with absolute authority, that Councilor Turner is one of the kindest, most honorable people any of us will ever meet in our lifetime, and I am coming not from ignorance and hate, but from knowledge and fairness. A couple last thoughts...With all the decent people that might work for the FBI, do you feel that the FBI as an organization has a good track record in this city and country?? Do you think it's fair or a little bizarre that alledged evidence in a trial is handed over to the press before an arraignment has even occurred or the defendent has even been made aware that they are going to be arraigned for something in such a serious case? Do you know that this is illegal in the state of Massachusetts for obvious reasons to protect all of us? Do you think that we have totally unbiased media in this city, that thoroughly reports all of our stories or waits to get all sides before making comments that could hurt or even destroy people who don't have the power that they do? Have you ever questioned or analized the FBI's or the media's possible motives in any given situation? Please open your minds and hearts and take the high road. Don't degrade yourself or "dumb down" to others when you personally have nothing truly concrete to base your reactions on, and are taking your lead from organizations known to often be biased, and in the case of the FBI even dishonest .

  1. People have to keep some things in mind here. Chuck Turner has done a lot of good over the years. One has to wonder what Wilborn's motives are for taking part in this.Interestingly, it is only black politicians who have been targeted. It really is not clear in the picture what Chuck Turner is holding and why would anyone risk their reputation and many years of hard work for the community for a mere thousand dollars. The racism that has come up as a result of this is apalling to me and the comments I have read make me very sad. Hasn't anyone ever heard of the concept of " innocent until proven guilty " and not making a rush to judgement ?

Posted by Janice November 27, 08 06:11 AM
  1. Yes, I've heard of the concept of being innocent until proven guilty. It applies to the legal system. It probably applies to most of our minds as well. We assumed Turner was innocent....then people saw him accept $1,000 as a bribe and that more or less proved him guilty in people's minds, regardless of his skin color or how great a community activist he was. Should people have to wait for a jury of 12 people (or whatever the process is in this case) to also come to this same conclusion before officially determining and stating our opinions on the matter?
