You can hear me now: Cellphone network complete in Big Dig

Cellphone service is finally available today from the deepest bowels of the Big Dig, eradicating a dead zone that has frustrated drivers since the opening of the tunnels.

A joint statement issued today by AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless announced that the subterranean wireless network was fully operational, providing coverage in the Tip O'Neill Tunnel and the Interstate 90 connector to Logan International Airport.

"A system of this size and complexity -- the provision of wireless service throughout an underground interstate highway with numerous on and off ramps -- is a significant accomplishment," said Mark Elliott, a spokesperson for the wireless companies, in a statement. "It is the result of a huge and sustained effort by the MTA and the wireless carriers.”

The Globe reported last week
that drivers had noticed cellphone service in the tunnels, although some calls were cut off by patches of static near entrance and exit ramps. At the time, the cellphone companies responsible for wiring the tunnels under contract with the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority said they were "getting close," but warned commuters not to expect regular and consistent service just yet. The wireless carries say that network has now been completed.

“We're pleased to finally bring cell phone service to the Big Dig tunnels,” said Alan LeBovidge, executive director of the MTA, in a statement. “Not only will the service allow uninterrupted service underground for the first time in the Big Dig's history, but the installation will also generate needed revenue for the Turnpike Authority at a time when we need it most.”

The wireless carriers plan to optimize their networks over the coming weeks.

  1. Does anyone know if this extends into the MBTA? I can't seem to get reception on any train between Boylston and Kenmore or Between Davis and Central. If I do get any, its sporadic and unreliable. I would like to work and be productive during my commute.

  1. What's the chances of setting up Sirius/XM in the tunnels as well so that we don't have to go to FM/AM while we're inside?

  1. It is about time!

  1. I think this is important and great. I think all that's left now is for satellite radio (sirius) to add a repeater of some sort so that service is not lost.

  1. This is also great for safety in the tunnels... People can call after an accident and tell 911operators exactly whats going on and whats needed to help.

  1. Excellent! I noticed Saturday I had full signal bars for once and was wondering why that was. I wish I had a nickle for the number of times I've had to say "Hey I'm almost at the tunnel, I'll have to drop off and call back." while on a con-call for work.

Now to add some GPS beacons down there. ;-)

  1. Hey Marie,
Hang up the phone when you're taking the T. You must be one of those jabbers who talks the whole ride home.

  1. Just what Boston needed - another place for drivers to talk or text while driving on their cell phones. How many more accidents will happen in the Big Dig tunnels now that cell phone service is available there???????

  1. XM and Sirius are in bad financial condition -- I can't see them coming up with the cash to install a system in the tunnels.

    - That was very funny John!

  1. Great, now people can call to report accidents that happened because someone was distracted by talking on the phone while driving.

  1. What -- NO WI-FI? How is the Big Dig supposed to compete with the Commuter Rail now?

  1. Oh good. Next time a chunk of concrete falls from a tunnel entrance onto my windshield cracking it (like in 2005) I can call my insurance company from INSIDE the tunnel. Wow.

  1. The tunnel was my escape hatch when a "Call was not going well" I would say..."Sorry, heading into the tunnell call you back..." Now where can I find a dead spot on my way home.

  1. Does this apply to the Tobin as well? I can never keep a call while driving over the tobin or in the City sq tunnel!

  1. This is great. I love reading these comments on boston.com more than the articles themselves. Great comments about leaky tunnels and falling cement.

  1. Why was this project even done when we're finally getting to some sort of societal consensus that people shouldn't be on the phone and driving in the first place?! Anyone know what happened to common sense?

Posted by GetOverIt November 10, 08 08:57 PM
  1. Julie, I don't know why you have problems with the Tobin. Verizon Wireless works with full signal strength across the whole thing. Maybe your carrier doesn't have a cell tower within a couple miles of the center of the bridge?

  1. John (#8)... best post ever!

  1. Great! Now the terrorists can blow up a bomb with a telephone during rush hour in the tunnel. What happened to homeland safety???

  1. Talking on the phone while driving is downright dangerous and should be banned. However, it doesn't seem to occur to any of the apparently single-occupant vehicle drivers here that maybe a passenger in the vehicle may want to use the phone. It also may not occur to people that while cell phone use is often not allowed in subways, texting is fine.

  1. Excellent! Now all those dickheads on their cell phones driving horribly can continue to bob and weave through the tunnels.

It's good to know the state has it's eye on the really critical problems facing us.
