Turner, Wilkerson plead not guilty before crowd of supporters

By Jonathan Saltzman and Andrew Ryan, Globe Staff

In a federal courtroom overflowing with supporters, City Councilor Chuck Turner and former state Senator Dianne Wilkerson pleaded not guilty today to conspiracy and extortion charges stemming from an FBI bribery sting.

The majority of the 200 people who came to US District Court for the five-minute hearing were there on behalf of Turner, who seemed at ease as he laughed with his attorney, Barry Wilson. When Turner strode down the hallway after entering his not guilty plea, the crowd parted and began chanting, "Chuck! Chuck! Chuck!"

Wilkerson struck a more somber pose in court, but she smiled at some of the spectators she recognized in the gallery. Standing outside the court house in a mist, Cornelius Reddick, 66, told the former Roxbury lawmaker, "We love you, we love you." Wilkerson smiled and responded, "I love you, too."

After the proceeding, Turner refused to discuss comments he made earlier today to the Associated Press that prosecutors may have faked a surveillance photograph that allegedly shows him accepting a $1,000 cash bribe from a businessman who was working with the FBI. When asked about the allegation, Turner kept his lips firmly closed and pointed to his attorney, who held an impromptu press conference.

"My position is I have no idea about what [the photograph is] showing," Wilson said. "All I can say is that I trust Chuck Turner. I don't trust the FBI."

Wilson also said he expected that more charges would be brought against his client as he belittled the sting in which Turner was accused of accepting a $1,000 bribe and lying about it to FBI agents.

"They do an 18-month investigation for this?" Wilson said. "It's rather pathetic, isn't it? Rather pathetic."

Turner pleaded not guilty to a five felonies; Wilkerson pleaded not guilty to nine. Both politicians remain free on bond.

Earlier today, Turner told the AP that prosecutors may have faked a photograph that authorities said was taken from a covert surveillance video.

"I've seen some grainy photographs. I don't know if that's me. They doctor photographs," Turner told the AP. "I know it looks something like me, but the reality is I haven't seen the real photo. There hasn't been an analysis done on the photographs."

This afternoon Turner issued a 2,200-word package of press releases that includes some of his most pointed criticism of the FBI, saying, "J. Edgar is dead but I believe his spirit lingers on." The material attacks the merits of the case and suggests that the FBI targeted Turner because he was an outspoken critic of the agency.

As he defends himself in the media and fires up supporters at public rallies, he has raised questions about the merits of the FBI investigation. Turner and his advocates have specifically pointed to a Globe article that ran last month about the cooperating witness in the case. Ron Wilburn acknowledged in the article that he was the unnamed businessman described in a 32-page FBI affidavit who handed Turner and Wilkerson wads of cash that federal authorities allege were bribes.

In the interview with the Globe, Wilburn said the affidavit "speaks for itself," adding, "It reads like the script of a Spike Lee movie." Wilburn did, however, specifically rebut one allegation made by the FBI -- that he told investigators that Wilkerson routinely took payments from people having business before the Senate. Wilburn told the Globe that he had no such knowledge.

Turner and his advocates have seized upon that disparity as evidence that the FBI is untrustworthy.

  1. This take's the cake, now I've heard it all. This guy is so out of it he'll proclaim the photos a fake because he knew he took more money than what's on the film. Good luck with your defense, oh by the way the moon landing was fake also.

  1. typical - even though he was caught with his hand in the cookie jar he is crying
that he was set up. What a great example he is setting for the youth of his community.."If you get caught -deny, deny, deny - then lie, lie, lie" God forbid he
set an example and admit his guilt and accept his punishment. Its alwyas "spmeone else's fault"

  1. I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers Chuck's disgusting libel of our troops, using his own fake photos. What an incredible jerk!

  1. Fake photos? If this wasn't so pathetic, it would be hilarious. The saddest part is that some people will believe him

  1. He got the Globe to print secret pictures of Iraqi prison torture from US GIs. Turned out that the pictures were stills from a German S&M porno film.

  1. The photos MAY be fake?!
    He's not sure?!
Is he saying, "That may be me taking bribe money, or it may not be."?

Does he mean to say, "These pictures are fakes. I've taken bribe money, but I don't recall wearing that outfit on the day I did so. "?

  1. This sounds oddly familiar. Didn't R. Kelly deny it was him in the video?
The only difference is R. Kelly got off b/c he had more money and could afford a better lawyer.

  1. Fu Manchu is going to be awfully surprised if more than one photo turns up. Assembled in sequence at roughly 24 FPS. With audio.

Next time the photo is displayed in an news article, I want to see a bra drawn in.

  1. ""It's rather pathetic, isn't it? Rather pathetic." says the lawyer.

No, your client is pathetic. As are all of his supporters who refuse to see their hero is nothing more than a corrupt politician. I hope both of them go behind bars for a few years.

  1. All I want to know is if all of these "supporters" were wearing their "stop snitching" t-shirts in court......God, these two have no shame and zero dignity.....You were caught on tape WITH AUDIO......You have no right to continually lie to your supporters, who are obviously weak minded to believe a word that comes out of your thieving mouths

  1. I love our system of justice. Everybody pleads "not guilty" and in the absence of representation the judge will enter a plea of "Not Guilty" on tha accuseds behalf. The most ludicrous demonstration of this type of machination is When Jack Ruby shot Oswwald on National TV, witnessed by MILLIONS of people but the initial plea was NOT GUILTY! Then again we have Teddy the buffon that waited 14 hours to sober up before reporting the drowning. Then high priced shysters got a closed hearing. Ami I a cynic??? NOT GUILTY!!!

  1. 200 supporters in court? where does he find these fools, and why are they not at work!
face the facts, HE IS GUILTY!
time to vote someone else in fot your handouts.

  1. Chuck Turner and his traveling circus show is an absolute shame. Chuck Turner is simply preying on those who they themselves are simple minded people who do not know any better, if they did they would not have been there today. However they have nothing better to do. Don't beleive me, ask yourself this question how do 200 people show up to a daytime time rally at a court house? Don't they have jobs? or do they all work third shift? No the majority of these people are out of work on welfare and could use some guidance to get themselves on their feet. Instead Chuck Turner uses them like a dog and pony show. The FBI has much better things to do then to set up a small time politician like Chuck Turner. It is time that these people who are allowing themselves to be used by Chuck Turner wake up and read the facts of the case that has been brought before the court and put their supoport behind a politician who truly cares about them.

  1. These two should get married, adopt our good friend Father Paul Shanley, and then they all can focus on their so called 'innocent' activities. As my father used to say many years ago, for every fish you catch on a hook, you miss many more who get away just in time. You have to wonder how many times these three got away with things over the years in the nick of time. I suspect what they are charged with, and what Shanley went to jail for, are far from what they did in total. They make me want to vomit.

  1. Next thing we'll hear is they grew up in crime ridden neighborhoods and broken home, with abusive single parents on drugs, went to inferior schools that taught stuff they couldn't understand, and had nothin' to do but watch TV and hangout. They were engaged in fundraising for the 2008 election receiving bundled campaign contributions as a consequence of working with minority entrepreneurs starting businesses and creating jobs in the Community.

  1. What could the FBI possibly have to gain by taking Chuck out? Yes, one of the most liberal states in the U.S. that voted for Deval and Obama overwhelmingly has an ax to grind with a city councilor from Boston.

Seriously, are the only people holding on to the monster called racism the very people who claim that they have been fighting for equality all of these years.

The public in general has more capacity to forgive taking a $1,000 bribe if you admit to it upfront. The longer you drag it out even though people know you are lying, the more likely you become a subject for the pundits and no one will forgive you in the long run.

  1. Funny how there is not one person who is speaking in defence of Chuck in these comments. Kind of makes you wonder how far these folks will go to convict someone who is not guilty.
Kind of like everything that has gone on in this administration. Very sad, but those who would put another human being through this will pay in the long run. As for the rest of folks who have writtne such horrible things in these comments, I hope that none of you have children to learn such hate from you.

  1. So I just read that someone actually reviews these comments. Then no wonder only the horrible ones went through. Very sad. I am sure that what I wrote will never make it. Which means that who ever you are veiwing these comments is in on this too. How sad.

  1. Pharmaceutical companies and other powerful lobbying interests (in years past including the tobacco industry) , give campaign money to our congressmen and women to ensure certain votes. What Turner and Wilkerson did seems to be par for the course.
