Cambridge fire burns 3 buildings, hits 4 alarms
By John R. Ellement and Andrew Ryan, Globe Staff
CAMBRIDGE -- An intense four-alarm blaze erupted in a three-family home on Lexington Avenue this morning and spread to two buildings next door, drawing scores of firefighters from nearby cities and towns to drown the flames.

The fire erupted at 8:15 a.m. in a beige, wood-shingle building and spread to the structures next door. Residents reported hearing popping noises and then saw flames shooting skyward. Arriving crews found heavy fire on a rear porch. It took nearly two hours to bring the blaze under control.
"The upper story was just fully, fully engulfed in flames," said neighbor Rick Lovett, who lives across the street. "There was a scary amount of fire."
At one point, firefighters were ordered out of the structure where the fire originated when the building became unstable. The chimney collapsed and part of the home gave way. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital, said Cambridge Fire Chief Gerald R. Reardon.
The blaze is in the neighborhood between Huron Village and Fresh Pond, near Mount Auburn Cemetery. It is a historic district with many two- and three-story homes. Streets were slick with ice from gallons of water dumped on the blaze.
The building where the fire originated at 72-74 Lexington Ave. sustained the most severe damage. As a neighbor across the street, Lovett said, he knew the homeowner and could imagine how much they lost.
"You felt like crying as you were looking at it," Lovett said.
The fire burned the roof and attic of a blue home at 78-80 Lexington Ave., where three Jesuit priests live. "We're all safe," said the Reverend Ron Mercier.
The third structure at 68-70 Lexington Ave. sustained largely smoke and heat damage.

Does anyone reading this know where on Lexington Avenue the fire is? What is the house number where the fire is? I have good friends who are quite elderly on Lexington Avenue, so I am worried about them. If you read this, and if you know the number on Lexington that is on fire, please email me right away. Thank you.
It's actually at a fourth alarm now. And the chimney has now fully collapsed. You guys at the Globe really should get a scanner to improve timeliness of reporting :)
It's 72 lexington; by fresh pond.
Please post the number of the house.
72 Lexington Ave. in Cambridge, according to scanner reports and WCVB
It's right in the middle of the Brattle-Huron block, the house directly across from Gracewood Park. The owner is not elderly. I'm sorry I don't know the actual number.
It is 72 Lexington Ave., a 3-family house.

I believe that the addres is 72 Lexington Ave.
WBZtv.com is reporting that it was 74 Lexington Ave. I saw it on the way to work this morning - it was a full blazing fire. They also reported that 15 people were evacuated; the only injuries reported were to 3 firefighters.

Horrible. Praying for the families that are now homeless so close to the holidays.
"72-74 Lexington Ave. sustained the most severe damage. The fire burned the roof and attic of a blue home at 78-80 Lexington Ave., and officials said it will be some time before residents can return there. The third structure at 68-70 Lexington Ave. sustained largely smoke and heat damage. "
Re: info # 26, NICOLE #29, & infointhearticle #32.
They've been updating this story throughout the morning. The first hour or two that it was posted, it had only a few paragraphs saying that there was a three alarm fire on Lexington Ave in Cambridge and there were no addresses listed.
To: 29. NICOLE do not be so rude. The address was not in there when the article was first posted and when Michael requested the information. The Globe updated the article as they received more information. It is nice that so many thoughtful and intellifgent people replied to Michael's post.
HEY NICOLE, LIGHTEN UP ON MICHAEL. IF YOU READ THE TIME OF HIS POSTING YOU'LL SEE IT WAS EARLIER THIS MORNING WHEN THE NEWS FIRST BROKE AND BEFORE THEY WERE GIVING OUT THE EXACT STREET ADDRESS. SHOW A LITTLE COMPASSION FOR SOMEONE WORRIED ABOUT HIS FRIENDS.
Sounds like a REAL cooker. Praise the Lord for the Fireman
No reason to get testy folks. Keep in mind that the article updates on a different schedule than the blog - when this initial question about the address was posted the street number was not published in the article. Thanks to everyone for their concern over my neighbors, I'm glad to hear everyone got out safely!
This is my friend's house. I am very sad for her. I hope she's ok.
I am soooooooooo glad the address was clarified.
Um, are ya sure it's #72?
The addresses affected appear in the article:
68-70 Lexington Ave.
72-74 Lexington Ave.
78-80 Lexington Ave
that was my brother and his fiance's house, they made it out ok with their dogs. so did their tennant.
if any one who knows them gets any news or gets in touch with them, please let me know. this is heartbreaking.
I live across the street in Gracewood Park. The fire was raging for a good half hour. The house next door, the blue 3-family, caught the fire from the side, presumably because the wind forced it in that direction. A general warning to others: Please be responsible about any form of a fire hazard- lights, candles, incense, cigarettes, etc. You never think twice about using any of these, but the 1/1000 chance that it causes a fire is enough to keep you vigilant.
We all thank everyone who helped subdue the fire, and our prayers are with the victims and the firefighters who were injured.
The smoke and huge flames that I saw this morning at 8:15-8:45 am from my back window coming out of 74 Lexington was very, very scary. Thank you to the men and women from Cambridge, Boston and Somerville Fire Departments who I saw respond to and fight this fire. What an incredibly sad and humbling event to witness!
Whatever firefighters get paid it is not enough.
Thank you firefighters for your invaluable service!!!!!
One report said it is at 72 Lexington Ave. No injuries so far reported other than firefighters.

I'm sure you meant no disrespect by the second sentence, but thought (being a FF that was there working) I'd remind you that it just doesn't sound good. Glad everyone got out safe, but a few cats did not make it. Sorry, we tried.
Can anyone report that all occupants at 72 lex are ok? These are friends I can't get in touch with.
72-74 Lexington Ave was owned for many yrs by my good friend and prominent Boston architect Bruno D'Agostino... his daughter inherited the home after his passing in May 2001... she escaped unharmed
Everybody is ok
kate,
everyone is physically fine, even the dogs.
I met with both Miia and Jasper and they are doing well.
This is so sad. This is my dear friends home. It is 72/74 Lexington. They are alive. Please send her and her family all of your thoughts, prayers and love. Absolutely devastating. Things like this really do happen to the best people. This is proof of that. PLEASE POST ANY NEW CONCRETE NEWS!!!
Has anyone determined the address of the fire yet?
I drove by it today. Everyone is fine, except 3 firefighters. I drove by it around 2:55, and there were still firefighters. You could see melted stuff from where the flames were. God bless those people.
Thanks everyone for writing in updates. Miia is obviously very loved (as were her parents).
Miia,
I'm glad to hear that you are okay. Thank you Guillermo for the information.
J&M - Glad you guys are OK! So sorry to hear about the house.
Miia I'm so glad to hear that you are safe! my thoughts are w/ you
We just got these schocking and devastating news . The main thing is that Miia and Jasper and all the others are alive! M&J, take care of each others!
With love, Elina&Jouko from Finland
Does Mia still live there? I know her dad left her everything after he passed and she was going to sell it but I think she had changes her mind.
