East Boston rally planned against tolls
By Globe Staff
Opponents of toll hikes by the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority have planned a rally this afternoon in East Boston.
Organizers hope that the 4 p.m. rally in the parking lot of Ecco Restaurant on Porter Street will draw "more than 4,000 people." Scheduled speakers include Christy Mihos, former Turnpike Authority vice chairman; radio personality Michele McPhee; Republican state Senator Scott Brown; and others.
The effort was spearheaded by Spencer H. Kimball, a Republican political consultant, and his childhood friend, Mike Kelleher, a wine salesman.
"It's an issue that hits home," Kimball told Globe reporter Noah Bierman last month.
After an initial vote by the Turnpike Authority board to raise tolls, Kelleher was outraged.
"I actually just left a physical and my blood pressure was up," Kelleher said.
The pair is promoting their protests on the website www.stopthepikehike.org.

What a nerve, to hike the tolls, they should not there anyway, the point of the tolls back in the 60's was to pay for the highway, and taken down when it was completed! The state has no consideration for its fellow residents between the high cost of living the cut backs on jobs, and the fact of being penalized for not have health ins. just adds on to this new hike. Unbelieveable!
I will definitely be there. The question is, will this do any good?
Well, It's the Boston Pols that caused all this mess. Tolls should have expired MANY years ago. But, they need jobs for theirs families and Pals and highend jobs to go with it. In order to do that, they had to borrow money, again and again. Ever notice that construction on this one road NEVER ends but the THOUSANDS of of roads in this state don't have that problem. This answer is easy - You enjoy the use of the road - You pay for the use of the one road. Boston and it's cronies enjoy the benefits of the Big Dig - Boston can pay for it.
Us Westerners will pay for it when we use it.
What a selfish and useless generation we all are!
We don't want to pay our dues for anything we have. Our lack of willingness to do the right thing for our children and grandchildren will surely result in a much worse lifestyle for them than we enjoy.
If our elected representatives were not such cowards, they would do the right thing and just raise the gas tax and help get us to the day when gas guzzlers are only for the most richest and greediest of us.
We seem to not understand that we cannot keep the wasteful lifestyle we have enjoyed over the past eight years...of borrow and spend, borrow and spend and borrow and spend some more. Want a war? just borrow from our kids.
want a turnpike, just borrow from our kids....we don't care, we are selfish jerks.
Now is the time to start thinking of others than ourselves. Lets start our new lifestyle NOW. Start thinking long term. Lets pay for what we use and not even consider selling our kids down the river with leases of our infrastructure to people who will make a fortune off our kids (this will be the consequence of resisting all taxes and tolls).
Isn't bailouts and deficit spending enough for us?
We the people, who declined to eliminate our state income tax in the recent election, have given a green light to the politicians to tax and fee us to death.
A big question I have is: Will the public hearings be actually open to the public or will the Mass Pike pull a dirty, like Comcast did, and pack the room(s) with Pike employees to shield them from answering hard questions.
Living in Winthrop I pay for clear water for the whole state. Now because I live Winthrop I have to pay for the whole state again. Next maybe we the people of Winthrop can help pay the whole states medical cost.
