A kitchen fire spread into a two-alarm blaze this morning at a condominium complex on Jamaicaway, displacing 16 residents.
It took firefighters 15 minutes to knock down the flames, which were contained to one unit on the top floor of the three-story building, said Steve MacDonald, a spokesman for the Boston Fire Department. Other units in the building sustained smoke and water damage.
Firefighters responded to 50 Jamaicaway at 5:00 a.m., MacDonald said. No one was injured.
Investigators have not yet determined what in the kitchen caused the fire. Damage was estimated at $500,000, MacDonald said.

I'm so, so sorry, guys. Horrible thing to have happen, especially at the holidays.

God was watching! Amen
Jamaica Way? Not sure where that is. 50 Jamaicaway? That we can find on a map. Too bad the Globe can't afford journalists who know much about Boston.
Ummm, if you don't know the J-Way maybe it's you that doesn't know much about Boston?
If you don't know the J-Way you are not a real Bostonian.
I bet you're one of those South Shore kids who moves to Southie after graduating from college and pretends that they're a real Bostonian, you know, as opposed to just another predictable suburban poser. Go back to the Plaza.
Red & Hinesy, calm down, please and re-read my post, since it says that 50 Jamaicaway *can* be found on a map.
Even in view of the corrected article, it's perfectly plain what I'm saying. Previous to my post the article spoke about some imaginary road called "Jamaica Way." When I observed that Boston had a Jamaicaway, but not a "Jamaica Way," the headline and the text were corrected. Not a poser, not from the South Shore, and I haven't been to the Plaza since the early '80s.
I am sorry to hear about the fire. Glad to hear that everyone is safe. Want to make sure that we don't lose sight of the situation.
All the best wishes to those who were affected! Hope you guys can move back in soon. We are so grateful that nobody was hurt!!
So glad that Jonas, Red and Hinesy decided to weigh in on this. Very helpful. Alternately, thanks to the well-wishing of our J-Way neighbors. We've been told 1 to 3 months -- hopefully it won't be that long, but geez was there a lot of damage.
Dear Past and Future Resident of 50 J-Way, I'm sorry that you got burned out. Were this a sympathy or prayer board, perhaps I'd offer some of both. But, it's not. It's a newspaper and comment on the accuracy of its reporting is apt in its...well...Comments.
