Harvard to present Kennedy with honorary degree
By Globe Staff
Harvard University will bestow an honorary degree on Senator Edward M. Kennedy this afternoon at a special convocation.
The ceremony will feature Harvard President Drew Faust and Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer as speakers, and musical performances by cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Harvard students. Kennedy will join an elite group who has received honorary degrees at special Harvard convocations, including George Washington, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, Winston Churchill, and Nelson Mandela. In today's Globe, columnist James Carroll described, "why this honor is fitting, and why he belongs in such historic company."
Kennedy had been scheduled to receive the degree at Harvard's commencement last spring but could not attend because he was recuperating from brain surgery. Kennedy, who graduated from Harvard in 1956, was "enormously grateful" for the honor.
At the graduation ceremony last spring, Faust described Kennedy as an "extraordinary person" who is "admired by colleagues on both sides of the aisle as one of the nation's most able, energetic, and influential lawmakers."
"He has without doubt been one of our most tireless advocates for education - and higher education in particular - passionately committed to opportunity for all, and to the excellence of America's universities," Faust said.
The senator has maintained close ties to his alma mater, helping to create Harvard's Institute of Politics -- which honors his brother, President John F. Kennedy -- and serving on its board for decades.
The senator, who has been battling a severe form of brain cancer from his home on Cape Cod, returned to his residence in Washington in late October, a sign that his treatments have been progressing well.
The Massachusetts Democrat, diagnosed about six months ago, will continue treatments in the nation's capital.

The same 'Harvard' that caught him cheating on a test back when he was a student?
Isn't there a statute of limitations on that, Bob? I don't know your age, but when you're Teddy's age, I wonder if you would like to have every dumb thing done in your youth harped upon? His years of outstanding service are what need to be remembered, not that.
Hey Bob,
YOu mean you know how to spell Harvard?
I remember when you...
A high school classmate
Ask yourself how many others cheated but were not caught, and, at the same time, remember just who Ted Kennedy's father was. Remember Joe Kennedy's motto, "The only thing that matters is winning" Remember also what Ted Kennedy has done for Massachusetts and the USA. Remember also another admonishment, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone".
The same senator who would probably have a (criminal offender record information) CORI if he wasn't who he is? I think he should get an honorary medical doctorate in brain surgery. He's clearly performed enough brainwashing to get people to keep voting for him.
This is a guy who should have served jail time and then, as a convicted felon, barred from the Senate. That we "honor" him is ridiculous
When the car was pulled from the water, it was observed that there were fingernail scratches on the inside of the roof liner. This indicated that Kopechne was alive, conscious and struggling to escape.
That is how she died: alone, drowning, in the dark of a submerged car.
Ted Kennedy swam away.
Was it the department that oversees charitable gifts that was the first to suggest giving the gin-soaked skirtchaser an honorary degree? Never let it be said that Harvard missed their opportunity to beef up their endowment. As for the man, has anyone in American history been given so much and done so little with it beside disgrace himself? No one else comes to mind.
Janet, actually I'm fairly certain the Senator does have a CORI. He was convicted of leaving the scene if I'm not mistaken.
Go back to NH and share your viewpoints there. Thank you.
The mysteries of the case continue to haunt Ted Kennedy as well as the authorities who investigated them. Charges of ineptitude and lack of diligence abounded, as did insinuations that the machinery of justice crumbled beneath the power and prestige of the Kennedy family. George Killen, former State Police Detective-Lieutenant, and chief of a never-revealed investigation, lamented that the failure to bring the case to a satisfactory conclusion was "the biggest mistake" of a long and distinguished police career. Senator Kennedy, he said, "killed that girl the same as if he put a gun to her head and pulled the trigger." Read more about the disgrace known as Ted Kennedy here: www.ytedk.com

I don't think ridiculous covers this travesty. And Obama is sending Biden on His behalf? What is that? Kissing the Ring? Yes indeed, this clown was expelled and Daddy Warbucks (AKA Joe Senior the bootlegger) made a big donation and got Teddy Boy his diploma. For those of you that think that Teddy did so much, it is easy to be magnanimous with other peoples (OUR) money. A cheater, guilty of at a minimum, negligent homocide and people are falling all over them selves. Frankly Teddy boy make Slick Willy Clinton look like a choir boy!
Good for you Senator Kennedy! Your years of service to Massachusetts and to the country are greatly appreciated by this transplant to Cape Cod! So much has been asked of you over the years, and time and again you've answered the call! Thank you and God bless!
Yes it has been a long time and doesn't really matter now. But a story written by the Globe that Ted Kennedy is being given the highest honor and doesn't mention that this same insitution that kick him out for cheating ???
This is the second time this week Globe did a puff piece on how Ted Kennedy played for Harvard's football team and caught a pass (wow) The Globe's author wrote that Ted left the school for "academic reasons" Come on !
Once again, the journalistic dishonesty of the Gobe.
What the great defending peoples that think Ted Kennedy is a great human being I really feel sorry for them , and some day I hope they will come out of their trance and finally realize just what type of a human being he really is.
Wouldnt it be great if Harvard would post the amount of Government Grants that Ted Kennedy was responsible for them receiving, if any. Could it be possible it would be in the billions? I dont know, just asking.
By the way, you Kennedy
Senator Kennedy was a great friend of Mass. as his brother John was.
Oh by the way, you could never guess who was one of the SENATORS from Mass. and who was the President when the BOSTON NAVAL SHIPYARD WAS CLOSED BY THE GOVERNMENT.
YUP, YOUR RIGHT!!!
Ted Kennedy is a travesty. His socialistic views and voting record hurt America by helping build the rust belt (suport to unions and high corporate taxes). He was likely a Soviet mole based on his voting record, as well (against SDi, against large deck carriers, against anythign gthe Kremlin was also against - now why was that?). He is morally questionable, but then again, Harvard is a leftist cesspool and the people of Mass deserve what they voted for (but the nation does not).
