Indictment charges Turner, Wilkerson with conspiracy

City Councilor Chuck Turner and former state Senator Dianne Wilkerson were charged for the first time today with conspiracy, adding another allegation to an ongoing federal bribery sting that has upended City Hall and Beacon Hill.

A federal grand jury issued an indictment alleging that Turner and Wilkerson worked together to extort money from a businessman seeking a liquor license for a nightclub in their district. The 17-page indictment does not describe any new evidence against either politician. It is, however, the first time that the grand jury has jointly charged Turner and Wilkerson in the corruption investigation.

The indictment also charged Turner with three separate counts of making false statements, detailing three specific instances in which he allegedly lied to FBI agents about accepting a $1,000 bribe. He is now charged with five felonies and is expected to be arraigned in US District Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Turner said in a telephone interview late this afternoon that he hadn't been informed of the indictment. After a reporter told him about the additional charge of conspiracy, he laughed.

"As I said before, I'm innocent of all charges, as will be proven in court," Turner said.

Wilkerson, who is accused of accepting eight cash bribes worth $23,500, now faces nine felonies. She has pleaded not guilty to eight of the charges and will be arraigned again on the conspiracy charge. Her lawyer, Max D. Stern, said he had expected the conspiracy charge because of the FBI affidavit released last month when prosecutors filed a criminal complaint against Turner.

"I don’t know of any evidence of a conspiracy between Dianne Wilkerson and Chuck Turner, but I’m not surprised that this is what the government alleges because … it’s always easier for the government to prove a conspiracy case,’’ Stern said.

Prosecutors have greater leeway to present hearsay evidence when they prosecute a defendant who allegedly conspired with another, said legal specialists.

Turner's lawyer, Barry P. Wilson, said his client broke no laws.

"I don't know what they're talking about -- conspiracy," Wilson said. "He didn't attempt to extort anything from anybody. As to the statements to the FBI agents, that's a setup. To me, it's just a lack of real credibility in the case that they go out of their way to create something."

Wilkerson faces up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine for each of the nine charges. Turner faces the same potential sanctions on the extortion and conspiracy charges. If convicted of making false statements, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine for each count.

  1. Pssst. .....Globe Staff........I understand with all the layoffs in the newsroom you could probally use some help in editing a few storys. The article on the first page of your site about Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich... ......he is a Democrat!
The AP, and Reuters article you ran earlier, failed to mention the party affiliation. Thought I might help you out ....seeing that you are probably shorthanded over there.

  1. I love that his attorney says he was set up....I suppose he routinely accepts hand outs of wads of cash from people he doesn't know? For that matter, perhaps others have added to the padding of Ms. Wilkerson but have not been captured on film. Pay to play as they say.

Go directly to jail and take your other slimey friends with you.

  1. these two criminals are a disgrace to the city of boston. they have been taped taking bribes and appear on camera doing such. you just know that their defense will be racism on the part of the feds and other authorities. whenever in doubt, play the race card. that seems to be the way it has been for decades for the politicians from roxbury. of course they are not the only corrupt politicians in the state, but the investigation has started with these two losers. throw the book at them. is there any way to get the bribe money back from diane's bra? what about all of the back taxes she owes? these two only got as far as they did because of their race. racism is not what put an end to their careers, it is what gave their careers life in the first place. send all politicians who steal and accept bribes to prison no matter what race, sex, sexual persuasion, creed, native language, etc.. good riddance to bad rubbish! and good luck finding someone to help pay your legal bills diane.

  1. 20 years for each of 9 counts?

Even for someone as corrupt as Wilkerson, 180 years seems excessive.

I say, let her plea bargain it down to 120 or so.

  1. HO! HO! HO!

Merry Christmas, Chuck Turner and Diane Wilkinson! Since you have both been such good little bribe-taking boys and girls this past year, we have some special Christmas presents just for you - some nice long prison sentences in a federal penitentiary!

  1. I can't wait to see this traced right back to Obama himself. And guess what -- the electoral college hasn't met yet, and this is exactly why it exists. Hello President McCain and VP Palin! Anyone with any common sense could tell that the whole Obama thing would eventually self-destruct, and guess what -- it just has, before he's even moved into the white house. Completely hilarious. And to make it even better he's already resigned his senate seat, and so has Hillary, and so has Arizona Gov. Napolitano. Got rid of three moonbats in one go, can't wait to see them replaced with some sensible AMERICANS.

  1. diane wilkerson is a disgrace to the city of boston and the commonwealth of massachusetts. she has lied and cheated for many years and finally, the chickens have come home to roost. she WAS just another crooked politician who became addicted to the power that she attained. unfortunately for her, she just couldn't stop the shenanigans. she has lied about financial situations for years. remember when she said that she could not pay taxes because some white racists were threatening her family, so she had to hire private security? there were, i believe, three yeatrs of non-payment of federal taxes. now we see that wilkerson has been stuffing her bra with wads of cash. how many bra loads of cash have there been? we know of one, but someone this dishonest has probably been doing this sort of thing for years. she had some good ideas over the course of career, but so did richard nixon. that does not mean that she has a right to cheat and lie and get paid and a great pension for it. i hope that ms. wilkerson can put her intelligence to work after her release from prison in 20 or so years in ways that will help the truly indigent, who she claims to now represent. as for chuck turner: he's just parleyed his racism into a full-time, great paying job. it's definitely time for him to go far away.

  1. kuditbe,
Not for one bit do I like what's going on with these two. But to wish violence on them? For shame.

    concerned reader,
Before you offer your editing skills, you'd best learn how to spell "stories."

  1. Why not put the (D) next to their names? If these were republicans it would be in the headline e.g. Republican Senator, (R). You wonder why these papers are failing.

  1. Here's a good idea guys...instead of kicking them while they are down, why don't YOU take on the responsibilities? Wierd huh? So easy to talk out of the other end when you don't know the intricacies that entail being a Senator OR City Counselor. Maybe that is what is wrong with our country nowadays...it's not oil, crime, lack of wealth distribution...it is the fact that Americans are so passionate about piling it on others in order to give themselves this fake superiority that they forget that THEY, yes, THEY are the real difference makers. When you guys finally decide to put your hind end on the line, then you can talk. Until then, just drink your Dunkin Donuts coffee and be quiet.

  1. Seems like a dose of skepticism is merited here... Particularly since the main witness has contradicted the FBI claims in an interview with the Globe. Thank God there's a www.SupportChuckTurner.com website to provide an alternative.

  1. If you don't suffer the racism of today, you can not appreciate the struggle. Too many of the comments clearly show no regard for the pain of others.
The funny part of this all is that no one cares to see tha the most corrupt per the FBI are all reps of the poorest communities & are minority in an overwhelmingly white population.

That gives you good comfort that just is being served for the greater good? Sounds more like people are glad to hear about the truth of today's racism. That can't be good for us as a nation.. Keep hiding the truth to improve things?

  1. To LM Robert,
I can't wait to hear your explanation of how two small time politicians from MA are tied to Obama. We survived Bush (barely). You will survive Obama.
Get over it. He is moving in next month.
