Man wounded in Downtown Crossing shooting
By Milton Valencia, Globe Staff
A 19-year-old man is in stable condition after being shot this afternoon in the city's Downtown Crossing area, Boston Police said.
The incident happened at 4:20 p.m. at the corner of Temple Place and Washington Street, said Superintendent Rafael Ruiz. The victim, who was shot in the hip, was taken to a local hospital.
The shooting took place near a sausage stand in front of Macy's, Ruiz said.
Police are looking for a Hispanic male wearing jeans and a red sweatshirt.
The shooting happened in an area that officials call "Boston's Meeting Place." The area is seeing $4 billion in commercial and residential investment, but it's not yet the world-class shopping destination the city has envisioned.
In early October, two young men were stabbed and shots were fired during an altercation in the area.

The area is "seeing" $4 billion...Do they teach english in J school anymore?
This is a shame. Downtown Crossing used to be a great area. I still shop at Macys and at Borders, but there is so much human trash congregating in Downtown Crossing now. These people not really there to shop, but to mill around, fight, shoplift and cause all sorts of trouble. The area is no longer safe for shoppers. The Mayor needs to task the police to actively clean up Downtown Crossing.
Great. One less place we of the non-gun crowd can shop.
Thanks for nothing, Mr. Jeans-and-red-sweatshirt.
Yo, yo, yo! Menino needs to go in there and clean all the degenerates out. Anyone walking through there on a weekday would think the Boston school system is nonexistant. Why are none of these 'kids' in school???!!! Parents don't care, kids don't care, truant officers are scared. What a mess the Boston school system is. And I'm not just picking on the Boston system. Most big city school systems are the same way. It's a shame because there are thousands of hard working teachers and administrators in the school system who try their hardest with mainly dysfunctional city kids that have no principles and don't want to learn.
Well hopefully this local government precipitated "Hole in the ground" (as my girlfriend puts it), will be rejuvenated after all the proud talk that the mayor and his developer bud's have given us. After taking 2-3 great stores out of commision it would be nice if they could 'one day' put something back in this area.
"The [Downtown Crossing] area is seeing $4 billion in commercial and residential investment, but it 's not yet the world-class shopping destination the city has envisioned."
Understatement of the year.
big shocker.
And the city wonders why this is not the world-class shopping destination . . .
Well . . . shootings AND the giant hole in the ground that used to be Filenes and claims to be a beautiful new tower -- but we'll never see it after the developer ran out of money
Not suprising. Even a couple of years ago, I went with my two sons to a poetry reading at Borders, and we walked down Washington St. to my sons car, and the collection of motley, mean, and nasty looking individuals hanging out in doorways, and trolling the sidewalks,in other words, scum, and low life. Made me wish I had a concealed weapon in addition to my sons for protection. It seems to me that Downtown Crossing especfully after dark, (now it looks like daytime too) it is a perfect union of PC, and Meranda at work. Peaceful citizens beware, you don't count, they do!
What in the world is going on here? How are these bums and punks who hide behind groups of people and weapons getting away with this? Downtown crossing is also a place for shoppers as well as tourist. No one's going to want to walk around in that area if they feel they may get shot, stabbed or robbed.
What they need to do is put a spread of undercover cops out there. high quality Video surveillance wouldn't hurt either.
Anytime you try to clean out the scum people you are met with some kind of phony accusation of "RACISM". You know the one about "if these kids were white the police would not harass them" routine.
So what happens? The city and state officials are scared off and the scum get away with it, and the shoppers surrender and go to some other place. This is nothing new to Washington street. This sort of thing is many decades old.
Downtown Crossing is a war zone and I'll be a wrinkled old man before it is any different. I want to live and not have my time cut short!
The Boston Public School system is not a mess it is parents that do not care about their children. I have three children that have graduated from Boston Public Schools with great education, and all are attending college. Do not judge a book by its cover.People can say that of any school system in any city or state. It is all about parenting, we raised our children with values and morals and I made sure I knew where my children were at all times. Even when I was at work. It is a choice you make. Blame parents not the school system
OK people, its life in the big city. I still am not scared of the crossing and I know that there is safety in #'s. We need more video cameras, the one they installed in the middle of the crossing was a good start but we need more, more, more. Its the best detourant for crime. Thugs don't want to be seen so lets put big brother to work. They installed the most elaborate system for the democratic national convention for a few select people. Lets start protecting the masses.
The kids congregating at DTC in the afternoon are there AFTER school. Part of the problem is a school system that lets kids out at 1:30 in the afternoon when their parents are at work, their after-school programs are being cut, and after-school jobs are practically non-existent. We don't live in an agricultural economy any more. Why don't we have a longer school day? Oh yeah, no one wants to pay more taxes.
Boston has been on a down spiral for the past 10 years. It cannot absorb all the different population groups coming into the city from every place on the face of the earth. This event is a water shed and, if the lousy Democrats do not change their ways, it will get a lot worse.
another mess just now.. a guy has been caught by many cops...don't know the exact reason
