Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter will get back half the gold coins and cash the FBI confiscated during his arrest earlier this year on charges he kidnapped his daughter after a bitter divorce and custody dispute.

The 160, 1-ounce coins worth $140,000 will be returned to Gerhartsreiter along with $6,480 in cash and keys to his Baltimore home, according to an agreement approved yesterday between his lawyer and the Suffolk district attorney's office. The remaining coins and cash will remain in evidence, but the agreement stipulates that the valuables belong to Gerhartsreiter, who sparked an international manhunt last summer under the alias Clark Rockefeller.

Defense attorney Jeffrey Denner described the agreement as a "good outcome" for his client, whom he referred to as Clark Rockefeller. The district attorney's office acknowledged that the gold and cash rightfully belonged to Gerhartsreiter and were, "not the result of ill gotten gain or fraud," Denner said.

"I laud the cooperation of the district attorney's office," Denner said. "I feel they have been extremely cooperative and very fair in their dealing with us."

The gold and cash could be used to pay for Gerhartsreiter's legal defense or any other purpose. Gerhartsreiter's former wife, Sandra Boss, has also laid claim to the gold in a case pending in Probate and Family Court. Gerhartsreiter has agreed to keep 60 of the coins in escrow until the resolution of that case, which is on hold while the criminal proceedings move forward.

Gerhartsreiter is accused of kidnapping his 7-year-old daughter, Reigh, during a visit supervised by a social worker in Boston on July 27. Authorities arrested Gerhartsreiter a week later in Baltimore and seized the coins and cash.

Authorities have identified Gerhartsreiter as a former German national who has used a long string of aliases. The Los Angeles County sheriff's office has labeled him a "person of interest" in the case of a California couple who vanished in the 1980s, when Gerhartsreiter was renting an apartment in their guesthouse.

Gerhartsreiter has pleaded not guilty to the kidnapping charges and has denied any involvement in the disappearance of the California couple. He is expected to appear again in Suffolk Superior Court on Dec. 23. Gerhartsreiter's trial is tentatively slated to begin on March 23.

  1. this man just wants his 15 min of fame, we gave it to him so why don't we just lock him up and forget about him now. the poor little girl has to go through life now knowing her father was a fraud and a liar.

  1. Hey BECKY, being a fraud and liar does not make one a murderer. A lot of people's parents are frauds and liars.. and they managed to survive.

Personally I think everyone gets their day in court.. last time I checked with was the Soviet Union.

  1. We are the ones committing a crime to Herr Gerhartsreiter. Just because he got some media time, he doesn’t deserve the treatment he has received by the Bay State. If he were a regular person, he wouldn’t even be in jail. People who commit much worse crimes than custodial kidnapping are free to walk the streets…

  1. Whoa, MTBR1975, I think you're off base by saying that this guy should be free after theft, kidnapping and murder. As upstanding Americans, we do need to question who is really an American. The difference between Soviet Russia and the USA is that some of us are true AMERICANS and make our own laws by majority rule, not in the commie way you propose where we have to have 12 idiots decide what the public already knows. I think most people think he should be thrown in jail for life - isn't the will of the American people good enough for you? Oh no, you want an elitist star chamber of academic geniuses to decide.

  1. I would not be so quick to blame only him for this fiasco. Do you really think a top McKinsey consultant and manager could not add two plus two when it came to her private life? That she did not benefit professionally from the Rockefeller name. I feel sorry for the child. She is the only guiltless one in all this. And sometime when she's older, she'll wake up and ask all these questions, suffering an even greater loss in the process.

  1. mtbr1975, Noone said anything about him being a murderer; it was said he is a fraud and liar and that is fact.

He is only labaled as a person of interest in the LA case at this time.

  1. 1975, I don't think Becky mentioned anything about him being a murderer.

  1. Sure he's due his day in court. All the lurid details so far indicate his guilt in the murder of the poor landlords and a pattern of sociopathic crime. Since the murder and stolen property involved crossing state line that makes this a Federal case. I'm not a proponent of capitol punishment, and who knows what other crimes this Clark Gerhartsreiter has done, but the sooner he is packed away the better.

  1. BECKY,
I don't think this guy was ever interested in fame. He's certainly got other priorities right now.

How is it that Kidnapping your own child is more egregious than the gang bangers killing people in Roxbury? Wanna talk about throwing away the key?

The MAX penalty under MGL Chapter 265, Section 6A, Kidnapping of Minor by relative is $1K and/or 1 years in prison. Subsequent provision for $5k and 5 years seems to require the child was endangered in some way?

The A&B against the GAL won't stick.

So guess what, your buddy will get 1 year imprisonment (with time served of course) and he'll cash in a few of those gold coins to cover the $1k fine.

It will be interesting to see if California tries to extradite next fall.

  1. Let's not rush to judgement here. Justice will be served on the kidnapping charge.s Sure Karl pulled a couple of scams but their is no evidence at this time as far as I know to connect him to the LA murders. He was there at the time but the police have been investigating this for several months and not pressed any charges.

  1. Brighton_Corgi: Gerhartsreiter is kept in jail because he is very likely to try to flee the country rather than face trial.

  1. He's a con man and that kind of cat just don't change their stripes.

His lies all add up to one thing - MOIDER.

He'll do time for the kidnapping, and the Assault and Battery.

CA is taking time to build the case.

This man will never see the light of day.

  1. Hey Gary Roth:

Those :"twelve idiots" you wrote about - do you perhaps mean a JURY?
That's called the English-American legal tradition. The majority of Americans who hear a case presented on the TV News or in the Herald know little or nothing about the it and have no right to judge. That's why we have courts, judges and juries. Furthermore, after they hear ALL the case, even they sometimes screw it up. Add that's why we have Courts of Appeals.

What you propose - that the 'Court of Public Opinion' should be judge, jury and executioner - is called mob rule. Read Lord of the Flies if you don't know how well that works.

It's a really good thing we don't let "majority rule" decide someone's guilt or innocence when charged with some crime or offense. With ignoramuses like you judging, we'd all be dead or locked up. Can you say Salem Witch Trials?

  1. Not-a-lawyer: They have GPS ankle bracelets and house arrest. Just because he the means to take off does not negative him having bail. Even reputed muderer Mafia bosses are allowed bail. Is he more dangerous than them?

  1. "not interested in fame" - funny comment. Then why did he choose the fraudulent name of "Rockafeller?" Why not "Smith" or "Jones."
    Come on.

  1. AWS,
He chose Rockefeller because it instantly established credibility for his scams. Much easier to give money to a well dressed guy named Rockefeller, isn't it?

Had you heard of him before this debacle? I thought not.

  1. This guy is a murderer. How anyone could have doubts about that are inconceivable. Extradite to california and warm up sparky!
