With the sun shining brightly and a bitterly cold wind blowing, the scrape of shovels and the roar of snowblowers reverberated around the state today as Bay State residents dug out from Sunday's storm.

Areas north of Boston appeared to be hardest hit, with Lowell getting 13 inches, and Methuen, Winchester, and Billerica getting 12 or more, according to reports collected by the National Weather Service. In Boston, 3.2 inches were reported at Logan International Airport by 7 p.m. Sunday.

Classes were canceled or delayed in numerous school districts. In Boston, school has been canceled until the end of the holiday vacation.

Despite the bright sun, the weather service warned that, in most of the state, except for Southeastern Massachusetts and the Cape and islands, strong winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph could create local whiteout conditions in the afternoon, making travel and snow removal more difficult. It said wind chills could plummet to between zero and minus 10 degrees this morning.

Because of the winds, ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard were canceled this morning. Service to Martha's Vineyard has since resumed.

The weather service also warned of slippery, untreated roads and said that some areas where the snow changed to rain before the temperature dropped again will be susceptible to scattered power outages as tree limbs bring down power lines.

Numerous delays were reported on public transit this morning, particularly on commuter rail, according to the MBTA website.

In Newington, N.H., the roof of a temporary storage building collapsed this morning under the weight of the snow at Great Bay Marine, said Roy Greenleaf, chief of the fire department.

No one was in the building when it collapsed. Some boats inside the building were damaged, including a large boat damaged by falling steel beams. No damage estimate was immediately available.

The storm Sunday walloped the state with powerful winds and freezing temperatures, trying the patience of shoppers, drivers, and holiday travelers, the Globe reports this morning.

Globe correspondent Casey Ramsdell contributed to this report.

  1. Jeez , this is New England. Why is snow such big news every winter?

  1. Umm...3.2 inches in Boston? Is that a typo or are they just counting Sunday afternoon, or what?

  1. it snowed for over 50hrs in Boston. Although it was two separate storms, it should count for one total. We got 15"

  1. In Boston, I believe, the snowfall is measured at the airport. The totals for the inland portions of the city tend to be higher.

  1. Sarah - the first paragraph states that area residents are digging out from "Sunday's storm" - so yes, the 3.2 recorded is for Sunday - not Friday's and Sunday's storms combined.

  1. Well Sarah, the article does make reference to SUNDAY's storm....

    LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOWWWWWW

    "as Bay State residents dig out from Sunday's storm."

    Yes, I would say "from Sunday's storm" would refer to Sunday. (BTW, "Umm,..." has become a truly tired cliche. And a rude one at that.)

  1. Another reason not to live around here.

  1. yeah, seriously, 3.2 inches? i'm seeing at least 10...

  1. The Boston accumulation is measured at Logan. Come on over to Hyde Park. We have 15 inches of snow on the ground. The Commonwealth should raise taxes on the amount of snow that falls and leave the cost of gasoline alone.

  1. Responding to ter. . .

    I'm with you. The media has been sensationalizing normal winter weather in New England for at least the past 15 years. I don't know why. When I was a kid, we used to just have snow storms and unless we got 2 feet+ of snow, it really wasn't a big deal.

    I guess they have to sell ad time. Also, I'm convinced local supermarkets are in on this - have you ever been to a Shaws or Whole Foods, the day before a "big storm" - people kill each other for supplies as if it were a nuclear armageddon.

  1. There's not enough news for all the news time they need to fill. They need to talk about something. I'd rather hear about the snow than the inane banter of some of those morning news shows. Fox 25 is the worst. They drone on and on about nothing. I think I heard VB talk about the marks he left in his undies after some diner visit. Now that's news!

  1. I live in Boston . . . had about 15 inches of snow on my walk, driveway and front yard.

  1. This is Snow-mageddon! Reminds me of the the blizzard of 78, which was also two storms within a couple of days like we've had. The only things missing...the high tides, flooding and ferocious NE winds. Of course that was in the middle of winter. This is much too much snow much too early. And yeah that Boston total of 3.2 must be for Sunday only.

  1. Lazy people who do not remove the snow/ice from the auto/suv roofs are IDIOTS.. I saw flying sheets on ice/snow on the highway going to work.. Just plan lazy people.. Clean off your entire vehicle. Lazy Lazy...Idiots.

  1. Wow..a front yard in Boston!

  1. What happened in NE where weather reporters got all of the power?? "It's going to snow...get home now!!! As a matter of fact don't even go to work it's GOING to snow"
    Monday morning: "Yeah, it snowed, we have nothing else to talk about" Cars sliding into train tracks, ice everywhere as it's 1 degree with the 45 MPH winds, you spent ALL weekend shoveling, snow is leaking in through your basement windows, etc... Yeah you can go to work, why not?
    When did impending doom take over the aftermath in MA?
    Today's commute was a nightmare!!

  1. you are kidding right, we live in New England, it is suppose to snow!
    Who is the idiot that calculated 3.2 inches of snow in Boston, it snowed for 2 days....we got 19 1/2 inches.
    Snow is NOT news..surprise everyone!!! it happens every year in the winter. Winter = SNOW
    What is up with people, they get stupid when it rains and snows...they seem to forget how to drive.

  1. Everyone makes French Toast during a snow storm. There always seems to be a run on bread, milk, and eggs....

  1. While an accurate count for Sunday (measured from midnight on), it is not representative of the new event and is poor reporting. Here's a count of the 3 days from accuweather for Boston zip code 02111:
    Friday 8.8
    Saturday 3.7
    Sunday 3.8
    Total: 16.3

  1. To #11/Matt - You said "When I was a kid, we used to just have snow storms and unless we got 2 feet+ of snow, it really wasn't a big deal."
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Because the equipment wasn't as good for predictions back then. They didn't have Doppler radar and all the bells and whistles that meteorologists have now (remember when they used to be called weathermen?) So they gotta prove that all of the expensive predicting equipment and software they have is worth it.
    But yes - the hysteria over storms now seems to be blown a bit out of proportion...except when you get stuck in 8-hour traffic like last year's Dec. 13th storm when the plows/salt trucks and sanders weren't ready for what ended up being a really big storm. So I'd bet that the hysteria was prompted by state and local governments making sure that people weren't going to be pissed off at THEM this time. :-)
  1. The MBTA continues their stellar service on the Worcester Line yet again this morning. Over 60 min late getting in this morning on top of what's become almost daily delays. How about making Dan Grabauskus take that line in for a month and see how he likes it? Maybe they should cut back on the catered lunches they get daily.....
  1. Did they really get 12 in. of snow in Winchester just from yesterday's storm?
    I live one town over and it looks like we got an additional 5 or 6 inches.
  1. for all you morons that continue to say that you have 15 inches of snow in your driveway, porch, car, whatever. those are Sunday snowfall totals only. Lowell got hit with over a foot JUST ON SUNDAY, which excludes the snow we received on friday and saturday. Logan reported 3.2 inches of snowfall that fell JUST ON SUNDAY. get it?
  1. I am living in the DC area now...I definately do NOT miss New England's snow! At times I do miss its beauty...though not all what you guys got this past wk.Though I will be going home for Christmas and wil enjoy it for a few days. At least you guys are experts in driving in those conditions--people here think a dusting of snow is enough to close down the schools and go home early--and get into accidents.
  1. NH and parts of MA are waking up to a new reality; it is no longer safe to leave your doors unlocked or your property and trailers unsecured. During the past ice storm, there were many generator and trailer thefts reported and un-reported. Those with boat trailers should buy a Trailer Gator - trailer coupler lock.
  1. In Methuen, the snow totals was about a foot on Friday night, and then a few inches on Saturday, and then again 1 foot+ on Sunday. So we had 2 1-foot snow-storms back-to-back on 2 conescutive days. When was the last time that happened, all you old-timers complaining about news coverage of the snowstorm? It was exactly because of the timely and repeated forecasts of the snow that a lot of people were safe and secure in their houses when the storms came. Although I believe they got it wrong on Sunday, or at least called it way too late when it was already obvious it was a major one.
  1. What happened to global warming? Oh, that's right, it was only a movie.
