Willmington man allegedly stole millions from entertainer Dane Cook
By Milton Valencia, Globe Staff
A 43-year-old Wilmington man allegedly stole millions of dollars while working as the business manager for the comedian and actor Dane Cook.
Darryl McCauley, who is Cook's half-brother, is facing charges of larceny over $250, larceny by continuous scheme, and forgery.
The attorney general's office announced the charges against McCauley this afternoon without identifying the "national entertainer with local ties" he allegedly bilked.
But a friend of Cook's said McCauley was Cook's manager and state records identified McCauley as an official in Cook's company, Great Dane Enterprises Inc. Cook's attorney, Joseph Zwicker, had no comment, but said he planned to attend McCauley's arraignment Wednesday in Woburn District Court.
Cook, 36, is an Arlington native who has acted in numerous films. He is also known as a standup comic.
McCauley allegedly stole the money from July 2007 to this month, at one point forging a $3 million check from his client's account to himself, the attorney general's office said.
As the business manager, McCauley was responsible for managing the entertainer's financial affairs. Authorities allege that he transferred the entertainer's funds to his own personal accounts, for his personal use, without the knowledge or permission of his client.
McCauley was arrested today without incident at his home by State Police assigned to the attorney general's office. The office said it began an investigation about two weeks ago.

What's the big secret........................the entertainer is Dane Cook. I read the article earlier in the Boston Business Journal.
The celebrity is Dane Cook.
isn't Dane Cook's brother's name Darryl McCauley? He is from Mass and worth millions.....hmmm
This is the first time anything Dane Cook related that has actually made me laugh. LOL!
Maybe Dane Cook shouldn't steal other comedians' jokes.
It's his half-brother. A full brother would have taken him for six million.
I should be paid $3 million for suffering through Employee of the Month
The real crime here is that Dane Cook made millions of dollars in the first place. His manager basically stole from a thief. Dane's been stealing other comedian's acts for years. He's a two bit hack comedian
Dane Cook is a great man, who makes me laugh! It's a crime to steal, so why are you all putting Dane down? As far as I see it he didn't commit any crime!!! You all just want to jump on the band wagon!! Grow up.
Agreed, a bit of payback for stealing other comedian's material.
Dane who?
wow, I guess he shouldn't hold his breath for "The Kennedy Center Honors..."
Wow angry people here!
Dan who????
The real crime is that this guy could earn millions of dollars...... he makes Paris Hilton look gifted.
Why all the hostile comments towards Dane Cook?
What did he steal? I've heard this before - that he stole other comedians' work. What work exactly has he stolen? Does anyone know or is this just hearsay?
really? this is news? All you people who are "Star struck" are a bunch of F ing losers. Get a life and stop worshiping someone elses.
Bunch of simpleton, lame, losers in this city.
Dennis Leary...now HE is a guy who steals all of it. Dane Cook? I don't know anybody who even does his style of comedy never mind it being stolen. Just another "I Can't Hold Down A Real Job So I Will Try Comedy and Hope Jay Leno Comes Back To Mass to Find Me" loser spouting off because he frustrated that he missed the comedy boon and now headlines at Ming Shu Chinese restaurant comedy nights.
Hostile? Just a natural reaction to being force-fed mediocrity by those who think they know what Americans should like. Dane Cook is precisely the kind of "entertainer" that, five years from now, you will not be able to find with a search engine.
Stealing is a crime. Don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of Dane Cook by any means, I don't find him funny at all. But non the less, you can't fault him for making the money he made.. People decided to pay him that money; they elected to attend his shows. Obviously there is a group out there willing to support his act to the extent that he was able to make 'millions'. If, in fact the content of his shows was illegitimate in terms of its content and originality, then, those, whos work has been stolen, and capitalized upon, should file suit on him. But, nobody having provided such material proof here of said transgressions, you shouldn't be so quick so jump on the band wagon. Hell, with that litigation happy society we have today, you would think that would have happened redundantly, until his program was shut down…. (For a lack of personal material)
The comedian who stole jokes was Carlos Mencia, "The mind of Mencia". Cook was one of the guys who called him out. Joe Rogan also rode him hard on his website. Get the fact straight sheeple....
He's stolen numerous jokes from Boston-based Louis C.K, as well as Demetri Martin. There are videos on YouTube that show the jokes side by side, was well as when they were first told, and it's pretty evident that some of Dane Cook's stuff is not his ownn material.
Regardless of your opinion of Dane Cook, he is making alot of money regardless of his talent or not(I know nothing about this guy) He made himself rich. And whether or not he stole material or not, he has made alot of money so he is doing something right..... I find it hard to believe that someone only doing others comedy would be this popular and make that kind of money. He must have some talent. And it doesnt give someone the right to steal. This has nothing to do with Dane Cook but everything to do with a criminal working for him. Its like your personal accountant stealing money from you.
I checked out some of the YouTube comparisons, and the case that Dane Cook rips off jokes is pretty weak...
Dave Chappelle has stolen tons of material from Prior & Eddie Murphy - where's the outrage there? Denis Leary mimics George Carlin incessantly - anyone wanna complain about him too?
Comedy is like movies - there are only so many situations you can 'create' - its the delivery and nuance that makes the difference.
Trust me, I'm no Dane Cook apologist - I think he's a total sell out and has lost his comedic ways of the past. But lets not peg him as a plagiarist based on a handful of similar jokes across hundreds of performances...
Cook is a well known theif-Mencia as well-You won't find one working comedian that has any respect for either one of these guys.
Dane Cook is a "great man"? How so? By what standard are you measuring his "greatness"? He's just a normal person who certain teenaged girls find to be humorous. Let's be mindful of our use of superlatives and not start erecting statues to someone who undoubtedly will be considered a cultural skid mark by historians.
Did the guy who took took the money have any connection to Sal DiMasi ?
I've never met Dane Cook. But I do know his FULL brother Darryl McCauley and his wife.I have always thought the world of Darryl. I, for one, will wait for it to be proven to me before I will believe it! This man is a fair, honest, hard working man that has always been very proud of his brother Dane's success.
FYI to the editor, Wilmington has ONE L!
Actually, unless it's copyright protected it's fair game....also ever hear of collaborative material? Every comedian borrows and every comedian is not knee slap hilarious to everyone all of the time. So, those comedians that he allegedly stole jokes from, the joke is on them for not copyrighting the stuff - doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that or to do it! Why all the haters? the story is about a relative that he trusted stealing from him!
Dane Cook is a comedian???
I can't imagine how this man feels - finding that the family you trusted and loved did not feel the same way.
However talented or not talented Mr. Cook is, he has just had his heart broken and to think that there are this many people that find this funny is disgusting.
Who cares????????
OMG seriously people....get over the "Dane sucks and is not funny" thing. You KNOW he's funny....if you don't laugh at one single joke or story he tells, then I'm sorry, you have NO sense of humor whatsoever. Everything he talks about is so true-to-life that it's funny (true, hence, funny) .... Anyhoo, I'm a good friend of Gary Gulman who was on LCS and one of Dane's best friends. I met Dane at The Comedy Connection when Gary was opening up for him. In fact, we went to see Gary and planned to leave right after, but stayed for one more drink...then all of the sudden, this guy we knew nothing about, Dane Cook, came out and called us out for getting up and leaving in the middle of HIS set. Naturally, we were mortified. He ripped on us so bad, and so hilariously (i'm sure that's not a word, but whatever) that we were enthralled with him and he convinced us to stay. We laughed so hard throughout his show that we left instant lifelong fans, and have been since. Ok, I get it, so he may have borrowed a couple of LAME comedians jokes, but HE made them funny with this animation. I'm sorry, but EVERY comic steals here and there from the others...it's the business. Nothin for nothin, I LOVE DC and will always be a fan. Sorry for the long post!!!!
A guy who's uses the word, "anyhoo" must be fan of dane cook.
"Dane sucks and he's not funny" and no, I've neve laughed at one of his jokes.
I saw Dane Cook about a year ago at the Garden. The place was packed and he was a riot! I also saw him a few years back when I had never heard of him. We have started going to Comics Come Home every year. For anyone who hasn't heard of that, it is a show put on by a bunch of Boston comics Lenny Clark, Steve Sweeney, etc., and hosted by Denis Leary to benefit The Neely Foundation for cancer research. That was the first time I saw Dane Cook. He wasn't even scheduled to appear, but was in town so he did a set. I have never, ever heard anyone do anything remotely like his style of comedy. So who exactly is he stealing from?
personally, i think the losers are the ones who have the time to sit here and say dane sucks on a blog. now, i realize all you clever, clever people, that i am also blogging-but it's just to say this: by tearing down an individual that has nothing to do with you at all, just because you don't like his brand of humor or you think he's stealing, it just makes you look lame. who cares? he makes some people laugh. why should that even affect you. let it go and live your life.
Isn't it sad just how many jealous and loney people there are in this world? Sounds like most everyone blogging here needs at least a little humor in their lives. Such angry and mean people! Sucks to be you. I've spent time with Dane and some of his close family members (father, mother, brother, sisters). The first show I went to I had never even heard of Dane Cook. Now I am a fan for life! To each his own. People choose to be angry with me because I choose to find Dane hilarious? Apparently, people are okay with Dane's brothers behavior instead? That makes perfect sence...Lots of stone throwing going on - hopefully you all don't live in glass houses. It is what it is.
It's been known, time and time again, that comedians will "steal" from each other. Asides from the few jokes that Dane may copy, he does make up a lot of his own material. And regardless of what others may think about his comedy and acting, he is making money. So he obviously, has talent, and extreme dedication to his work, and most important, his fans. I am a fan of his, and regardless of all the smack, have respect for him. He is human, we do stupid things, so maybe copying some jokes was his. Big deal. People need to stop making it a big deal. Stealing is stealing, plain and simple. It's a crime, regardless of if it's done to a celebrity or not. He trusted this man (suppose half brother) to handle his finances. He trusted the man with his earnings, and got screwed. Justice will be dealt with accordingly, and I do hope that, regardless if his half brother claims not guilty, they find him guilty and gibe the justice that Dane deserves. I get mad when others steal money from me, and I don't make nearly as much as Dane does. It's a crime, period.
i kno this dude. hes my best friends dad lmao. his son was on my baseball team. i feel bad for his and all u guys saying all this stuff he has a family. i dont get why he had to steal all the money but dang id understand if he stole from u but he stole from someone u guys will probly never meet.
So what TJ, you want us all to feel bad for some jerk that steals from his own brother. I don't care how you slice it, the guy is obviously a loser that needs to be in jail. Embezzlement is a crime and stealing from family, I believe, should be an even bigger crime.
