Cambridge College officials today named Texas A&M University associate provost Tito Guerrero as president following a year-long search to replace its former head, who was fired amid allegations of financial misdeeds.

Guerrero, the vice president and provost for diversity at Texas A&M, has previously served as president of Stephen F. Austin State University and the University of Southern Colorado.

Jonathan Z. Larsen, chairman of Cambridge College's Board of Trustees, called Guerrero "a visionary leader with a stellar national reputation and a wealth of diverse academic experience."

Guerrero, 61, will take over March 1, succeeding Eileen Moran Brown, the college's chancellor who has served as interim president since January 2008.

"I look forward to working with Dr. Guerrero as he continues the important mission of Cambridge College," Brown said in a news announcement. “He shares passionately our commitment to providing academically excellent, cost-effective higher education to a diverse population of students.”

The private adult-oriented college has almost 10,000 students, about half on sites in Cambridge, Springfield, and Lawrence.

Guerrero, who received his doctorate degree in education from Harvard University in 1977, said he looked forward to advancing the school's mission to help older students resume their studies in hopes of launching better careers.

"I have spent my life dedicated to a belief that higher education can throw open the doors of opportunity for everyone," he said. "That spirit is enthusiastically embraced at Cambridge College."

Last January, college trustees fired Mahesh Sharma, a mathematician who had worked at the college for 30 years, after reporting that they found evidence of inappropriate hiring and financial practices, including the use of a college credit card to buy rugs for his home and trying to use college funds for his nephew's college tuition.

Sharma has denied wrongdoing through his lawyer.

  1. As a person who is a longtime resident of Cambridge, and believes in the mission of Cambridge as a city, and promoter of adult education as a part of lifelong education, and as a graduate with doctorate degree in philosophy of education from Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1980s, I heartedly welcome and congratulate for the coming president of Cambridge College, Dr. Tito Guerrero, and Cambridge College. May they persist in continuing education for adult learners and others. Young Sook Kim, ED.D.
