An 11-year-old boy is in fair condition after falling from a third-floor apartment window this morning in Lowell, police said.

Keith Mao was conscious and responsive after the incident on Pine Street, but was experiencing leg pains when emergency personnel arrived, Captain Randall Humphrey said in a statement.

Mao was flown by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Doctors are examining the child for possible bone injuries to his legs, police said.

The child’s mother, who has been identified as 27-year-old Sophy Mao, was present when the fall occurred. The Department of Children and Families will be notified, and detectives from the Lowell Police Department are investigating the incident.

At this time, there is nothing to indicate the fall was more than an unfortunate accident, police said.
