Two fisherman died after their boat caught fire early this morning and apparently sank off the coast of Gloucester, the Coast Guard said.

The bodies of Matteo Russo, 36, and his father-in-law, John Orlando, 58, were pulled from the 42-degree water around midday, said Petty Officer Connie Terrell, a spokeswoman for the Coast Guard. A helicopter, cutter, and rescue boat were used in the search.

Searchers found a debris field off of Gloucester, but have not yet located Patriot, the 54-foot trawler owned by Russo. At 1:45 a.m. today, the crew reported a fire on the boat, but the Coast Guard does not yet know the details of what happened to the two men.

"This type of tragedy just strikes deep at the heart of our community," said Gloucester Mayor Carolyn Kirk. "The Gloucester fishermen have a long history of tragedies at sea, and every time it happens, it brings up the sorrow of every family that is touched by it."

  1. SO SORRY TO HEAR OF THE LOSS OF TWO FISHERMEN - THE FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF THESE MEN KNOW THE REAL DANGERS OF THE COMMERCIAL FISHING INDUSTRY, THROUGHOUT THE WORLD.

THE FISHING INDUSTRY IS BEING PUSHED INTO EXTINCTION BY UNREALISTIC LAWS AND REGULATIONS. FISHERMEN ARE BEING FORCED TO FISH WHEN/WHERE THEY WOULD NOT NORMALLY BE. THERE LIVELYHOODS DEPEND ON THEM TAKING EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CHANCES IN ORDER FOR THEM TO UTILIZE THE LIMITED DAYS AND LOCATIONS IMPOSED UPON THEM FOR COMMERCIAL FISHING. IF ANY INDUSTRY SHOULD HAVE BEEN "BAILED OUT", IT ABSOLUTELY SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE COMMERCIAL FISHING INDUSTRY.
TH INDUSTRY IS DOWN TO A HANDFUL, NEVER TO RETURN TO ITS ORIGINAL RESPCTED PLACE IN COMMERCE - HERE IN THE U.S. AND WORLDWIDE.

  1. My condolences to their family and friends - these hard working men gave their lives so that others could eat their bounty.

Can't think of a much more noble calling.

And not to get rich - just to earn an honest wage.

  1. Confused by the first comment; Did a third man perish and is yet to be found? So sad...

  1. db,
Probably not the best time to launch into a political diatribe. Respect the loss and the grief.

  1. I went to church tonight - 5:30pm mass in Manchester MA and heard about this from the sermon. The priest asked that these men and their families be prayed for. I got home and saw this story. How heartbreaking. May god be with you through this very difficult time. I'm so sorry.

  1. My deepest condolences to the families of these men. Fishing was a large part of my heritage and from experience, there is no better feeling in life than when you actually receive a loved one's return to harbor. Unfortunately today, two families will not see that day. I beg the media and db not use these losses as a device for Fishing Laws. These men were fathers, sons, uncles, cousins to many who at this time surely are not thinking about fishing regulations, etc. Please let them grieve in peace and offer support.

  1. The loss of a loved one is always difficult, but losing John and Matteo so abruptly and tragically will never be understood. They were two amazingly loving and caring men. The were the type of people you could not be in the same room with for long without smiling. I hope their family knows how much they are loved and that their friends are here for them in this terribly difficult time.

  1. To the families of these two brave men; Our hearts and prayers go out to you. I have someone within my family who grew up in a fishing family and has lost members of her family. It is a hard and dangerous job to do and I have a lot of respect for the people who do this job so that we can enjoy the wonderful flavors of the sea. May God bless your families at this time of loss and may those around you be there for you (as I am sure they will be). Just remember that they and you are loved by many even though you may not know them. Sorry for your losses and may the peace of God be with you.

  1. DB, Enough of your political rant. There's a time and place for everything and now isn't the time for spouting off. Also, use small letters when you post.

  1. My girlfriend and I were on the windy breakwater by the lighthouse when a Coast Guard boat and helicopter made their way to the harbor. We both commented of how hard a job both the fishermen (women) and the Coast Guard have, especially at this time of year, and how we hoped the Guard was on routine maneuvers.

Our thoughts go out to the families and our thanks to the Coast Guard for their service.

  1. My condolences to their family.

Db is correct in everything he stated, it is a disgrace what is happening. These two brave men were FORCED to fish short handed. Two men where 4 or 6 are needed. When short handed, exhausted by hard work, it is easy to overlook a potential danger and prevent a fire, and it is also that much harder to put the fire out, or stop the boat from sinking.
