A standoff with a prisoner with a razor ended this afternoon at the Edward W. Brooke Courthouse when police were able to calm the man down, a police spokeswoman said.
The man was holed up alone in a cell and had been threatening to hurt himself. Police cleared the scene in downtown Boston at 3 p.m., nearly 2 1/2 hours after a SWAT team rushed to the courthouse on New Chardon Street.
The man was taken to Boston Medical Center. His name was not released.
The Edward W. Brooke building houses several courts, including Boston Municipal Court, juvenile court, and housing court. The courthouse was not evacuated during the standoff.

Why in the world was the SWAT team called to this??? A waste of our tax dollars. The guy has a razor in a cell by himself. He is no danger to anyone but himself so why would you call the SWAT team? If he's going to be such a tool just let him cut himself then go in and get him
It's one guy? Lock the door, wait until he falls asleep and take the stupid razor away from him.
How is it possible that I'm not in charge of everything, everywhere?
Taze him!!!
If you have a better way to get him out of the cell YOU GO GET HIM !!!! It's about officer safety not tax dollars.
Nice in theory, but if procedures were not followed, and the stupid "tool" hurt or killed himself - LAWSUIT!!!
zap him for goodness sake, SWAT?? Are you idding me that police and prison guards can't take down one guy with a razor???
BTW, how did he get the razor in, wasn't he frisked when he was arrested/brought in?? Our law enforcers at thier finast!!
OH, gotta love the drama!
Then the article would read "Cops Fail to Act as Mentally Unstable Prisoner Slits Own Wrists"
And all these posts would be ranking on the police force and we'd waste money on an investigation of unfair treatment of mentally ill prisoners, then the state would be sued by the guys family and have to settle for $500K or so in damages.
I think they did what they have to do.
The real question is why did the guy have a razor in a cell????
Another happy citizen who couldn't pass the civil service exam ,and now the "COPS" are stupid .Lets let this guy hold a court house hostage ,till he hurts himself ,good answer - not .The job is to protect and serve ,even clowns like you and this nut .
send that nut to gitmo
They secured the scene and the person without further harm, that is mighty fine police work. Until next time, sigh.
Rob - you should be in chage of everything, everywhere. Common sense. Refreshing!
I think it's funny. These comment sections are like a bad accident. I don't want to see them, but I can't look away. It's like bait that i can't help but take.
To those of you who blast the police response citing a waste of tax dollars, understand this....Police Officers are actually trained to do their job. I know one might think that reading these columns all day would make you qualified to be a Police Officer. I know that many might believe that their version of "common sense" should replace all the training and years of experience of our sworn law enforcement officers. But it doesn't.
Police Officer's are sworn to protect everyone, even the guy who says he wants to hurt himself.
As far as how did the razor get in the cell? Ask the same question to anyone who works in corrections. You'd be amazed at how creative people can be when pushed to do so. It's likely that most people would be shocked at the things that corrections officers and administrators have to go through. Everything can be a weapon.
AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SWAT team rushed to the scene lol are you kidding me that is a bit extreme, our law enforcement alone should know how to handle this type of situation plus the guy was behind bars. the perfect procedure for this was to taze him he would have drop that razor at the touch of the first volt. waste of tax payers money.
Know one was hurt , everyone went home. Sounds like a good job to me.
Why wouldn't SWAT be called? They have the necessary equipment (i.e. slash and stab resistant suits). To my knowledge court officers don't have that equipment. As far as how the razor got into the cell? I've personally seen people swallow razors and stick them in places you can only dream of. For the people who suggested "tasing" him. I don't believe tasers are used by BPD. The liberals think that because one in a million times they may be lethal that they shouldn't be used. If that guy killed himself there would be a lawsuit suing everyone and their mother(paid by your tax dollars. ) If an officer got stabbed it would barely make thepaper and you people would barely care.
I'd come at this guy like a "spider monkey on crack"! Let me in the cell - I'll take him out!
These situations happen all the time at group homes, psych hospitals, etc and somehow they manage them safely without having to call in a freekin' SWAT team. This is a shining example of completely hysterical macho overkill because somebody couldn't say no when the boys in blue polyester wanted some new toys and now can't wait to the use them. When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. A bit like driving a ladder truck to a medical call.
Lighten up, Francis...
