The Jan. 6 fire on Peterborough Street began in the ceiling of a restaurant, Thornton's Fenway Grille, the fire department said in a statement.
The department said the finding was based on interviews with the first firefighters to arrive at the scene, physical evidence, burn patterns, and other factors. The fire department received the assistance of the Boston Police agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
The fire destroyed Thornton's and the Rod-Dee Thai Cuisine, El Pelon Taqueria, Greek Isles, Sorrento's, and Umi Japanese restaurants. The fire also destroyed Bon Cleaners.
