As the Globe reported last month, students are applying to Massachusetts public colleges and universities in record numbers. The recession is motivating families to consider less expensive schools, according to education officials.
The increased attention coincides with cutbacks in state funding for public colleges and the probability of additional cuts to balance a large budget shortfall.
In December, state officials estimated that revenues could fall by as much as $749 million because of job losses and declines in capital gains taxes, and many college officials expect 10 percent less in state assistance next academic year.
Wilson, who became UMass president in September 2003, oversees the system campuses at Amherst, Dartmouth, Lowell, Boston, and the medical school in Worcester. Collectively, the schools serve more than 60,000 students.
