US Marshals blasted for escorting Fox broadcasters to World Series

US Marshals violated regulations and ethical standards when they escorted Fox Sports broadcasters to and from several major sporting events, including two games of the 2007 World Series in Boston, according to a report issued today by US Inspector General Glenn A. Fine.

The 44-page report concludes that Joseph Band, a lawyer assigned to the "ethics team" at the US Marshals Service, misused his position at the agency while moonlighting as a statistician for FOX Sports. Band enlisted deputy marshals to transport him and his friends in motorcades to and from stadiums, airports, and hotels. The events included an NFL playoff game in Tampa in 2007 and the 2008 Super Bowl and the NCAA national championship football game, both of which were played in Phoenix.

In Boston, the report singled out Yvonne Bonner, who served as acting head of the US Marshal Service in Massachusetts from December 2006 until her retirement last month. Bonner is accused of violating standards and misusing government resources by dispatching two deputy marshals to Fenway Park during each of two home games of the World Series to escort Fox sportscasters Tim McCarver and Joe Buck in motorcades back to their hotels. The marshals were given passes by Band that allowed them enter the park and watch the games, according to the report.

During the second home game on Oct. 25, 2007, Band brought the deputy marshals into the press box, handed them notepads, and asked them to obtain weather conditions at the ballpark and help him record on-base percentage statistics, according to the report.

For her part, Bonner said she knew the FBI led Joint Terrorism Task Force was at Fenway Park for the World Series and thought it would be "beneficial" to have extra deputy marshals there if a problem arose. However, the report notes that members of the task force were not told about the additional deputies and were surprised when they saw them wandering around the ballpark.

Bonner wrote a letter to the Inspector General objecting to the conclusion that she had done something wrong. "Faced with the information I had at my disposal at the time, I would respectfully suggest that my actions were reasonable, justified and of benefit to the interests of the USMS, notwithstanding any possible misconduct or nefarious motive on the part of another employee (Mr. Band)," Bonner wrote.

The report says that the US Attorney's office in Boston declined to bring any criminal charges as a result of the probe. Federal prosecutors also declined to press charges in Washington, DC, where the US Marshal Service is headquartered.

US Inspector General provided a copy of the report to the US Marshals Service. The agency released a statement that said: "The actions of Band described in the OIG investigation do not reflect the culture of this agency nor the high standards to which we hold our employees."

Band, who had worked for the US Marshal's office of general counsel since 1992, recently retired, according to the marshals.Deputy marshals are responsible for transporting prisoners, protecting judges, and tracking fugitives.

  1. I don't see the problem unless they were paid OT.

  1. With all the bad and criminal things happening in the U.S. today, this is the major news item on crime? But no one sees a problem with Bernie Madoff today getting to keep his "house arrest" status. This seems like that same old complaint as when Doug Mirabelli had a state police escort to the game. Get your priorities straight and complain about something worthwhile.

  1. Doesn't FOX represent the views of the current Republican administration and doesn't the US Marshals fall until the federal government? Seems fishy! Nothing surprises me anymore-6 more days under this regime!

  1. In this country of where everyone thinks they are special and abuse the power entrusted to them by the people, is anyone surprised? I'm sure they got paid overtime for being at the games as well.

  1. FrankD! you don't see a problem? What does attending the World Series have to do with "transporting prisoners, protecting judges, and tracking fugitives"? Typical law enforcement mentality, as long as I have a badge I can do whatever I want.

  1. Is anyone accountable for their actions anymore?

  1. What's the bigger waste, that they did it or that someone spent two-plus years investigating this?

  1. Well I for one am shocked that a lawyer would do something sleazy or unethical. Shocked! And he was on an 'ethics team' for the US Marshals? Sounds like he's the right man for that job!

  1. Get off your Bush beating bandwagon, it's getting old!!!! You're gonna be pretty bored with nothing to talk about on the 20th since Obama is sooooo perfect!!!

  1. Did anyone else notice that all of the fuel surcharges that were added to goods and service when oil skyrocketed are still in place? Pizza delivery, which used to be free, now has a 2 dollar fuel surcharge. Airlines still charge a fuel surcharge, even though oil is below $40 a barrell. Our entire country is corrupt-from the politicians, to the corporations. You people getting excited about Obama should read about his real relationship with Tony Rezko. He wrote a letter on Tony's behalf to help him obtain 43 million dollars in loans to refurbish low income housing. The housing didn't get refurbished needless to say.
Meet the new boss.....same as the old boss!

  1. ENOUGHisENOUGH - the escort for Mirabelli was paid for by the Boston Red Sox, a private company, not the state police.

  1. If the marshalls were really concerned with protecting citizens they would have stopped Tim McCarver from doing color commentary for that game.

  1. The problem here is not that this is a small issue compared to millions of people losing their jobs, gang violence and inner city drug wars at the highest levels in the history of our nation, or the outright ownership of our government by the pharmaceutical, oil, financial and special interest groups. This is a clear symbol of the total corruption of our government at every level, and we comment on it in this small section because it is the only thing we can do. The US Government is too big, and the American people to brainwashed by a media controlled by the highest bidder, that there will be no change. The republic founded by our forefathers is dead. The only way out would be total anarchy and that cannot happen because we are all sheep who are happy as long as we have our McDonald's burgers and choice of SUV, and the 50 million or so of us who are not happy are on Prozac or Zoloft, or some other mind altering pharmaceutical intervention approved with a wink and a nod by the FDA. Besides, anarchy only leads to Tyranny, and that isn't any better. So enjoy your burger, and your SUV, or pop your pills, because those of us who have government backed power will abuse it, and give you the finger if you whine about it.

  1. Of all the sportscasters to protect, they pick those 2 idiots!! Most of America would be happy if something happened to Joe"I'm anti-Chicago sports teams because I have a secret love affair with LaRussa and too stupid to have a valid point when talking" Buck and Tim"The Steinbrenners are my best friends and they treat me very nicely even though I have the edumacation (mispelled on purpose) of a 3rd grader" McCarver. I am not as bothered by the fact that the Marshals protected someone but who they protected. Thank god NBC has the Superbowl this year and we don't have to listen to Joe Buck pretend he knows about football.

  1. since when is being a broadcaster considered a dangerous job that requires a security escort????

    what a ##### JOKE

  1. They should have escorted McCarver and Buck to Gitmo, where they belong.

  1. It doesn't seem like there are any ethics being taught in schools. These people think this sort of thing is ok. Believe me, I saw many, many unethical things done while I was working. It amazes me that people can put their head on a pillow at night and sleep knowing that they have taken advantage of people.

  1. Fox Sports? No surprise there, since the Faux Network has been the Bush Administration's closed circuit extension of the White House Press Secretary for quite some time. What Fox wants, Fox gets, or they might have begun reporting TRULY "fair and balanced" news and not kissing Bush butt 24/7.

  1. Y'know, Billy Notnilc , you're right! What a relief that will be.

  1. You just can't beat a public sector job, from "public safety" right on up to federal marshals., including politicians. Municipal, state or federal jobs, the ultimate DOLE. Do whatever you want, the stupid taxpayers are paying for it.

  1. For those who consider the news story "Bush Bashing" ... I didn;t see any mention of George the second anywhere in the story .. it was about an abuse of power and the improper use of federal law enforcement personnel ... marshals are for catching criminals .. not for being gophers for Fox sports employees .. and I'm quite sure if the game would have been carried by CBS or NBC the "shrub:" backers
kwould have been screaming bloody murder about the liberal media abusing law enforcement officials ...

  1. Hey "Try This" --I don't disagree with you but I find it extremely ironic that you didn't mention TV and pro sports in your diatribe on brainwashing and sheeplike behavior.

  1. Another reason to hate those two. Worst sportscasters ever.

  1. No surprise here! Interestingly enough, more and more public officials and employees, especially of the upper echelons, are misusing and abusing their positions and powers of authority. Pay attention to your national news everyone. America has some serious problems on many different levels. Sign of the times people!

  1. That's nothing. The US Marshals Service puts up "no parking / no standing, US Marshals Only" signs around all of the US Courthouses. That's OK. But they park inside and then give their contract sercurity officers (CSOs) buddies, who all just so happen to be retired law enforcement, placards to put on the windshields of their private vehicles so they can park on the street for free. This beats the cities out of the revenue they might otherwise earn from parking meters; it stops patrons from finding quick parking to do some shopping and thus beating downtown businesses out of revenue and making for even more losses on tax income for the city; it creates a fire hazard by blocking a fire lane for the buildings and creates a perfect opprtunity for a terrorist since they know the same cars are going to be parked around the same courthouse every day. That's OK. I'm sure those folks crawl under their vehicle every morning to check that everything is OK before head they off to work. That's what I call the "Retired Law Enforcement Parking Subsidy Act."

  1. It's amazing, nobody ever blames Congress for anything that EVER happens in gov't... It's been dem controlled the last several years, and things have only gotten worse, yet people keep electing leftists! Who did the bailout? The leftists did! They're all about redistributing wealth- to themselves. The rules never apply to them. Only to us, the taxpayer, who gets mislead and duped into voting for them.

  1. This just reflects the contempt the Bush Crime Syndicate have for the American public at large. They were showing their broadcasting wing a great deal of respect by having the public foot the bill for escorting them around to ballparks. Thankfully, this nightmare will soon be over.

  1. Don't forget the big issue. Bonner and Band lied under oath. Their transparent feeble excuses for their actions are a pretext and the US Marshals Service needs to address this issue. Misuse of a Government vehicle is nothing compared to the fact that two high level officials, who were in charge of Internal Affairs and ethical issues, Chose to lie under oath.

  1. I don't understand why people aren't upset about government officials stealing your money to spend on themselves, and then getting off scot-free when they're caught red-handed!

To all you "no big deal" folks - your apathy is the reason corruption is allowed to continue. Feel free to reimburse me for my share of the money you helped these crooks to steal - consider it taking "personal responsibility" for being lazy dupes in the face of the duties of democratic citizenship.
