Two people were killed early this morning when a man drove the wrong way on Interstate 495 in Bellingham and rammed a car driven by a 21-year-old woman from Westminster, State Police said in a statement.
The man, John Waterman, 41, of Worcester, was driving at a high rate of speed in a 2006 Ford Five Hundred and went for some distance in the wrong direction, south in the northbound lanes, police said. At 12:20 a.m., he struck a 2008 Hyundai Elantra head on, killing Myja Parviainen of Westminster.
The Ford rolled into the median strip and caught fire. Rescue crews pulled Waterman out of the sedan, but he suffered serious injures and was pronounced dead at the scene. Parviainen also died at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation. Northbound I-495 was closed for 3-1/2 hours while crews removed the wreckage.
