Bridgewater marine dies after blast in Afghanistan
By Globe Staff
A 21-year-old Marine lance corporal from Bridgewater died during the weekend from burns and other injuries he suffered last month in a bomb blast in Afghanistan, according to a city official.
Lance Corporal Kevin T. Preach died Saturday in San Antonio at the Brooke Army Medical Center, a renowned Army burn hospital, said Roderick K. Walsh, Bridgewater's director of veterans' services. Bridgewater lowered its flags to half staff yesterday in honor of Preach, a 2007 graduate of Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School.
"It's devastating to this community," Walsh said this morning in an interview. "It's the first service person from Bridgewater -- man or woman -- who has lost their life in a conflict since Vietnam."
The Brockton Enterprise reported that Preach was the gunner in a Humvee hit on Jan. 24 by an improvised explosive device. Preach lost both his legs and his hand was badly burned, his mother, Laurie Hayes, told the Enterprise.
