A 6-year-old girl collapsed during gym class at an East Boston school after suffering a heart problem, Boston EMS and the school's principal said this afternoon.
The girl was in stable but critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital, said the principal, Maryann Manfredonia. She said the girl, who had been dribbling a basketball, did not have any known medical conditions.
"She was in gym and she just collapsed," she said. "Staff and teachers did perform CPR immediately and then EMS came."
Rescuers responded to the East Boston Central Catholic School on London Street at 12:47 p.m. The girl had suffered a “cardiac incident,” said EMS spokeswoman Jennifer Mehigan.
