Melrose YMCA coach arrested on rape charge
By Globe Staff
A girls basketball coach at the Melrose YMCA is facing charges that he raped a girl he coached, prosecutors said today.
James Conner, 51, of North Reading, was arrested Thursday night and arraigned today in Woburn District Court. He faces two counts of rape of a child by force and one count of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, the Middlesex district attorney's office said in a statement.
A judge ordered Conner, who is also assistant director of the Y's after-school program, held until a bail hearing slated for Wednesday.
"We allege that this defendant, over the course of a number of years, violated the trust placed in him as a coach of young girls and sexually assaulted this young victim," District Attorney Gerry Leone said.
Leone said investigaors continued to probe whether there were other crimes against the same victim or other victims.
"Because of the way that the suspect operated, our investigators are concerned that there could be additional victims who have not yet come forward," North Reading Police Chief Edward W. Nolan said.
Police urged anyone with information to call the district attorney's office at 781-897-8400, the Melrose police at 781-665-1212, or the North Reading police at 978-357-5046.
