Two killed in fiery I-495 crash
By Benjamin Paulin, Globe Correspondent
Two men were killed in a single-car accident on Interstate 495 North in Littleton early today.
Robert Wedge, 35, of Spencer and Kenneth M. Lovejoy, 27, of Grafton were killed when Wedge lost control of the 1985 Ford pickup truck he was driving at around 4:31 a.m. The truck struck the right guardrail, then swerved left across all lanes, hit a bridge abutment, and caught fire, State Police said.
Wedge was flown by helicopter to Boston Medical Center with serious injuries and was pronounced dead around 6:08 a.m., State Police Lieutenant David Wilson said. Lovejoy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The left and middle lanes of the highway were closed until around 6:30 a.m. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

One need drive on I-495 for only a few minutes to see that the most common risk is speeders who weave through the right lanes, combined with a lack of traffic enforcement, which allows these reckless driving patterns to become more the norm than the exception. When the ongoing dangerous driving causes a crash, we have the audacity to call it an accident.
I grew up with the Lovejoy family in our small town of Hopedale Ma. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
To the first comment, I cannot believe your audacity. Not only do you not know the details of this accident, but you also lack knowledge of the circumstances and causes of this incident. Please do me, as well as yourself, a favor and do not speak beyond your capacity. Rest in Piece, Kenny and Rob.
it is a given that 495 can be a traffic nightmare! however, it was early in the morning, road conditions were not a factor, the pick-up truck was moving way over the speed limit and according to local police (town and state) alcohol and drugs played a role... tragic and senseless to be sure....but, this could easily have been prevented... i feel great sorrow for the family and friends of these 2 men because it seems their fate was in their own hands.
